After almost 12 months of waiting due to COVID and a host of other pesky delays I now have my PTP5 Lenco up and almost running. Simon and Ben at Hifi Guru have delivered a fine piece of turntable.

HDF, MDF and a heavy acrylic provide mass and dampening. Kuzma Ref 313 12” and a yet to be setup Helius Orion tonearms. ZYX Ultimate 100 on the Kuzma and probably a Miyajima Spirit mono on the Helius. A Phoenix Eagle and Road Runner set the pace. ZYX CPP1 head amp into  a Music First 632 MM phono stage.

Unfortunately, my SOtM Dac/Pre decided to have issues so I only have the pre in my Topping headphone amp to do Pre duties which is robbing me of hearing the very best of the tt.

Apologies for the pics, the black gloss makes it difficult.

Ooeee that’s a nice Lenco build 👍 Great to see a Lencohell platter as well. I run a combination of Lenco heavy platter, glass, and stainless steel platter stack to good effect.

I would have liked to have the Road Runner for mine - I went with the more available Nigel speed controller, but it’s been sitting half built for the pat 6mo (I overestimated my building abilities).

Hi Derek,

I have a TD 150 II with the OEM arm. I think the arm is holding it back, because I don’t rate the sound.

Maybe one day I will bring it back into service and recondition it, and maybe upgrade that arm.

Cheers

Hi Grant

It is not simply the arm - I am sure that there is a cartridge out there to match it for best reproduction. However, there is so much resonance in the original base and platter and base board and … the list goes on and on. See the link to my build. I replaced or modified so much more than changing out the arm.

Regards from Perth

Amazing range of TTs folks! Here's my Transrotor Dark Star with Transrotor branded Jelco 250 tonearm and Transrotor branded Goldring 1042 cartridge currently going to a Gieseler Phongraf.

Looks great Matt and should be well worth the wait.  I have heard the PTP6 with a collaroo mat and it may be worth a try  - "Developed from our acclaimed Precision Cloth Turntable Mat, 'The Tempest' is a heavy pure woollen cloth turntable mat, surface-treated to provide a soft felt-like support to the record, whilst adding a heightened degree of isolation from mechanical noise which is inherent in some idler-drive Transcription Decks and Broadcast Turntables. It should be used as a replacement mat rather than on top of the existing mat, and its thickness should make any VTA adjustment unnecessary. The Mat was developed to work with Transcription turntables manufactured by Collaro (4T200), Garrard (301, 401, 501 and for classic DJ work, the 4HF) Goldring/Lenco (GL75 L78) and Thorens (TD124) and should provide excellent results with these and other makes."

Wow!

I'd bet it sounds amazing.

Highly recommended the Spirit mono.

It has been a long time coming, but I finally sourced a late Ekos 2 (couldn't afford the SE) to replace the Jelco arm I have had for some years. The rest of the LP12 has been substantially upgraded over the years, to the point that I have a second LP12 built up of the bits replaced by upgrades.. So we have Hifiguru redgum plinth/cirkus/kore/trampolin2/lingo4. And the effect of the Ekos 2 has been pretty impressive. Has a much more punchy presentation and bass is much tighter.  (as an aside, fitting the Delos in the small head shell, was a challenge that lead to the demise of a set of headshell leads! Clearance for the aftermarket tonearm cable was tight too, and needed a bit of ingenuity)

Tonearm upgrades are one of my favourite. So very satisfying. The redgum plinth looks special.

I was tossing up between the late 70's and 80's.....I had a Rotel RD2200 Cassette Deck in 1978 and it had LED meters, so I should have known this wasn't the 80's!😁

Thanks for the response. Interesting about your experience with the Ortofon 2M, it seems to divide opinion.  No arguments from me on your main cartridge  - I agree that the 740ML is great.

Look forward to hearing your comparison if you plug the Thorens into your main rig!

Well, I received the Musical FIdelity MX-VYNL and set up. I thought I migh have a little improvement in sound but...WOW, it's been a huge improvement!! This little preamp is amazing....Discovering instruments I didn't know they were there....The Yamaha internal preamp is a competente one but...this is other her league..
