It's alive! Albeit in the rough service plinth I made. Needs more work, but already it is easily better than my crappy old Planar 3.

Hi,

Thanks, the big problem was finding my set of small screw drivers, to attach the cartridge firmly, eventually had to go to the hardware shop to purchase a new set and putting small amounts of 'fillers to get it level, all good on first play, may need to play around with the height of the arm a little but not by more than a millimeter or so ....

Ha Bz, I didn't know what to do with mine either :) found the older 3 point topped Footers unstable--so never used ,so redundant--don't know if they do any good but add "mass" I suppose-Ha!

The Cantus is a fine design IMO - a (split) glass tube with just a couple of bearing races, simple. No air pumps, etc.

Rather like the Souther/Clearaudio, Tri-Quartz, but way simpler.

A longer arm wand (than the Souther) helps too, tracking-wise, I reckon.

Linear trackers don't get much cleaner in concept.

A DIY effort here

Yes, indeed. I start my journey with it and then I switch to ProJect, Techi, Jelco, SME 309 and now back to the Cantus again ... to retire with it. I will leave it in my testament  :D  On of the best. :thumb:

Little bit "pity" to set up but worth to spend time on it.

Ha ha Wilco.   I use my Shakti bricks as weights for light items as well :hiccup

So you put one of these sensational Shakti 'bricks' on top of your headshell, to improve the sound, Shane? ;)  :P

Or just the phono stage?

Ha- Yes had these in my travels as well--Maybe didn't give them a fair go --they soon departed unfortunately--can't see much "weight" factor--they're light as feather if I recall--ha :D !

i always thought the stock vendetta was already the ultimate... :party

Aha, Someone knows--the VR is virtually unknown in Oz-yes an oldie but goodie-owned and heard a fair few Phono stages over the last 40 years--nothing has eclipsed the sonic musicality of the Vendetta-mine is the 2T with the upgrade JFets/Teflon caps/Pwr supply/etc -John Curl only made 5 of these.I usually make a special point of auditioning Stages at the shows, dealers andPrivate homes /etc in my travels and nothing in any current crop of stages --to my observation--is superior to the 27 yr old VR-SCP-2T.

It's only competitor is the exalted Mares Connoisseur --that being the one I'd be tempted to swap for :thumb:

Good listening

Easy sounds better by a margin.

So you're saying the arm would sound better if it was machined out of bronze, rather than (I think it was) glass, Dr GV?

Now glass 'rings like a bell' ... hehe - but so does bronze! :P  After all ... what are bells made of? ;)

Aluminium, I could understand (it has better internal damping than steel) ... but bronze?

You need to provide some examples/proof why bronze would be better. :)

Regards,

i have never heard one, but know it's legendary.

as you surely know, john curl named it vendetta research after he was humiliated and called a "has-been" by some industry head.

his latest effort is the constellation perseus 2 which is said to be very good too. you heard that one yet?

Willco, if you still have those 3 point footers, give the points a good whack with a hammer, they are magic & disappear real quick, leaving a nice flat surface.

Hi AB, Sort of correct --he was not paid by high flying Manufactures looking for the young designer to sell his soul with the pretense of the "honor" to work for them-- meh!--the most notorious being the Dennesen JC-80 Preamp among  string of others---which he was never paid for his work. The Vendetta name came about from J Gordon Holt when he was in conversation with John re the need to hit back and recoup his "Mana"-hence as you state the legend was born.

Yes indeed I know the Constellation well having heard on at least three occasions-and excellent product-JC with Bascom King have done a superb job with the products--just a tad outa my Wallet range I'm afraid!. The owners are Oz based of course-with the plant in the US

For a man of few words you may like to read some of JC's philosophies and reasonings that helped to shape our passion for the Absolute Sound

Good Listening,

Willco

My word that olive wood looks nice as does the whole rig. How is the clamp for getting it tight and then undoing it? It looks a bit smooth and lacking in grip or is that some kind of grippy texture on it?
