Digicruiser Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 Just watch the film Gladiator again. Hehe, "Republic, Republic, instead of Howard Ceasor and his "Gods" in Britian.
Binxx Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 Only 1 vote for Santa (as of 3pm AEST 30/08)....... C'on guys, just read his posts to be convinced he can do a better job than the one we have now. Well maybe anyone can
rfa Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 the problem with a republic is that there CAN NOT be a consensus about the type of republic we decide on. I for one do not support a directly elected head of state, as this politicises the role (which is fine as a figure head, as is the case now) the other side of that particular coin is who in their right minds want politicians to choose one on our behalf? the problem with the monarchy (& govenor general et. al.) is that they are only a figure head. (this is the case at the moment) which is unrepresentative and remote from the populace (us) [not the u.s.a.] which leaves us with a nice ideal, Santa Go Santa!
datvman Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 they shouldn't put any politition on a stamp, people wouldn't know what side to spit on
rfa Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 Why SANTA????Why not ME!!!!!!!!!!! because, Dad, You weren't an available option. (& you're a real person) not to say that Santa isn't real kiddies, but he is better as an ideal (not to say that you're not Ideal, Dad)

Thats the one! (You know, I was thinking it was colonel something, but then I got these images of The Major from Fawlty Towers...) Come on - I'm just one vote behind "Monarchy as we know it*" - vote 1 Santa! ___________ *"Thats a monarchy, Jim, but not as we know it..."
Dik Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 Santa as a benevolent dictator, now there’s a thought. Best of luck, Dik
Latham4PM Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 Just get us a republic and be done with it! To not be a republic is like a grown man still being breastfed by his mother! It is extremely childish, showing immense immaturity and totally embarassing.
disco_stu Posted August 31, 2004 Posted August 31, 2004 I personally don't see why we need to change, all that messing about and what's the benefit to us going to be? The Head of State doesn't do a whole lot, so what does it matter who it is?

Try explaining to a 6yr old why IOC officials are raising the same flag if Australia had won silver behind Great Britain (Cycling). Don't even bother trying to get the NZ flag into the equation......
Santa1503559644 Posted August 31, 2004 Posted August 31, 2004 Flag change, maybe. New anthem - certainly. But a republic? I'm a foundation shareholder in Occam's Shaving Implements Co...
Timmy Downawell Posted August 31, 2004 Posted August 31, 2004 Flag change & republic definitely. What's wrong with the anthem? Consider yourself lucky it's not full of references to God like NZ's (God defend New Zealand).

The North Korean anthem's probably better!
Digicruiser Posted August 31, 2004 Posted August 31, 2004 Hang on!!!!!! Don't Santa's only do good things around Christmas and the rest of the year they disappear without a trace? So we have to wait a year in duration to sort out our Digital etc... hmmm Maybe a new plasma or LCD each Christmas could convince me

No, I dont need Agent Malone out looking for me - I only go into hibernation around events like the Oi-limp-pics. So, you expect the pres to fix DTV?!? I suppose thats what a head-o-state's for!?
John_Barber Posted August 31, 2004 Posted August 31, 2004 Try explaining to a 6yr old why IOC officials are raising the same flag if Australia had won silver behind Great Britain (Cycling). Don't even bother trying to get the NZ flag into the equation...... Apart from the obvious question on what sort of inferiority complex compels people to change their national identity and historical symbols to suit 6 year old children, one could explain to kiddy that a part of the flag indicates Australia is part of a tradition which has developed into some of the world's great democracies. Like the cross on Swedish, Danish, Norwegian and Icelandic flag, the union flag component represents a common heritage. Like the common colours & layout of flags in some Arab countries, there is a representation of something in common. Like the Southern Cross on our flag, as well as the flags of Brazil, New Zealand and PNG, an indication of our location. I do not feel my national identity compromised in any way whatsoever by sharing elements of our flag's design with other countries. I do not feel that sharing a figurehead sovereign with 3 of the world's great free, tolerant and diverse nations demeans me. I do not see how sharing a similar political system with the top 5 (or more) "quality of living" rated nations takes anything away from my self respect. Now I have a work colleague called Mustapha, he hasn't felt the need to change his name to Mike because it is a name we are less familiar with. The Nguyens down the road don't need to change their name to "Newen" to suit the ignorant. The argument to change ourselves to suit the ignorant or the prejudiced demeans ourselves and that is one argument which does nothing to forward the flag changing or republican cause. Cheers JB

Now I have a work colleague called Mustapha, he hasn't felt the need to change his name to Mike because it is a name we are less familiar with. No, I'm quite familiar with the name Mike! Binxx Posted August 31, 2004 Posted August 31, 2004 I do not feel my national identity compromised in any way whatsoever by sharing elements of our flag's design with other countries. I do, Im an Australian and would like to be identified as one. I prefer not to be associated with someone who reckons we are the leftovers. Same thing with the Australian children, born and brought up in Australia. They have their own identity, their own diverse culture, not just of the Simons and Jones but as you yourself pointed out of the Mustapha's and Nguyens and they would rightly prefer to have their own identity and not be associated with someone else. The crescent on the flags of many Muslim countries is linked to the Muslim religion, hence it is common across them. Also the Scandinavian countries have much in common throughout their history. Importantly, they are linked to each other by land, they share their borders and are not on the opposite sides of the earth. Union Jack belongs to GB and they are welcome to have it. Many Australians, including myself would prefer not to see it on our flag. The latest example is the newest flag created, which also has a bit of the 'tradition' you talk about. Why is it that this flag does not have the Union Jack in it? I hope you have realised that I talk about the new European Union flag Cheers Binks
Binxx Posted August 31, 2004 Posted August 31, 2004 Flag change – Definitely Republic – Should be Anthem - Not sure?
