Search finds 'anti-Bush' activist's canoe

Northern Territory police are conducting a land search for a man who has been missing since Monday, after finding what they believe to be his six-metre out rigger canoe on Bathurst Island, north of Darwin.

The 38-year-old American citizen left Dundee Beach, about 70 kilometres south-west of Darwin, on Monday by canoe.

The man told locals he was unhappy with the Australian Prime Minister and the American and Indonesian presidents and was going to Indonesia to take action.

Police believe the man was only carrying a small amount of water and was not properly dressed for the extreme weather conditions.

Ships were alerted to keep an out eye for the canoe and Northern Territory police conducted two aerial searches.

A helicopter spotted the canoe at Point Fawcett this afternoon.

You just cant keep a "good man" down!

(at first I thought the story was a croc yesterday, with "Dundee beach", leaky canoe at point Fawcett, etc, but the story's still going...)

Concerns anti-Bush canoeist unprepared for journey

A man feared missing off the Northern Territory coast has been found but has again set sail for Indonesia.

The American man is paddling through the Timor Sea in a six metre canoe, apparently in a protest against the US President.

The man arrived on Bathurst Island last night, he left soon after being told he was not in Indonesia.

The man initially set out from Dundee Beach, south of Darwin, on Monday.

Sergeant Chris Lyndon from Territory Police says the man did not stay on Bathurst Island long enough for local police to speak with him.

"Whether he's prepared or ill prepared we're not quite sure but we have concerns for him," he said.

"But as far as legislation goes we don't really have any power preventing him doing what he wants to do," he said.

Sergeant Lyndon says Customs planes and commercial ships in the area have been asked to keep an eye out for the man.

Sergeant Lyndon says the man is not prepared for the journey.

"We don't really have the power to prevent him from sailing to Indonesia, but we are concerned that he is not in any condition, or is certainly not prepared for that length of journey," he said.
