ENIGMA Posted November 11, 2011 Author Posted November 11, 2011 Here are a couple of recent plinths, my aplolgies on the poor photo quality - the plinths are as shiny as glass. Below is an earlier commonwealth, the armboard sits in the opening on the top right and is set up for a Kusma 4point. This is the plinth i nearly had on show at the hifi show. The other photos are slate bases bade up for an Aura TT & the slate dramatically improved the performance of the Aura. TigerScent Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 hmmmm, I have 2 slate slabs I ordered, one for the Rega Planar 3 Custom I am making, and the other as a spare for down the track. I really like the look of the RP3, and its a shame it just 'looks' like a 'slate turntable'. I sold a RP3 in 94, with a rewired (VandenHull silver Litz) RB300 and always regretted it, so I decided to make a 'super RP3' with custom plinth, rewired RB250 with damped arm, michell tecnoweight, redesigned motor housing/suspension area..., AudioNote solid silver tonearm wire (available from Finn Bespoke Croydon AU or AudioNote UK). I am going to put solid silver female rca's, so that I can swap/play with various standard connection/exotic interconnects... which is going to be operational down the track...It will look pretty much like a RP3, but with a slate slab... In the meantime, I have modified a RP3: the RB300 arm, with Isokinetik silver plated tonearm wire, internal damping, motor housing mods, ruby bearing ... Keep in mind the RB300 only has one bearing and the spring assembly 'rings like a bell' or jewish harp. To test it, take the weight off, and put the base firmly to the cartlidge in front of the ear and 'tap it'....you can hear it. This translates as distortion. Setting it to >3gms decoupled still does not remove the ringing. What I did, is cut 2 thin slithers of ear plug foam, and put them inbetween the springs to dampen. No more ringing, weight is adjusted by the tungsten weight itself, and via jewellers scales. The RB250 arm has 2 bearings, no vibrating springs and is in essence a better arm, however, the RB300 can be made to sound as good or pretty close per above mods, and is resaleable as the foam slithers can easily be removed from the springs....
