ENIGMA Posted October 14, 2009 Author Posted October 14, 2009 Current update; Mounted an SP10 in the plinth today, looking good. Still some finishing and polishing to do. Got the slate oil today and it looks like i may have to buy some special stone grinding and polishing tools to finish the appearance properly. (approx $700 worth) The next SP10 plinth will be cut soon, just punching in the different arm mounting specs and some slight adjustments to the orig template. No point posting photos at this moment.
jaspert Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 I'm sure the next one will be much more straight forward with all the things learnt along the way. Let me post the photos for you.
soundfan Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 I'm sure the next one will be much more straight forward with all the things learnt along the way. Let me post the photos for you. Yes please. Am dying to see a pic of a completed plinth. Chris
ENIGMA Posted October 15, 2009 Author Posted October 15, 2009 Jasper, I had an SP10 sitting in your plinth tonight. The silver against the grey looked really nice. I'm nearly ready, now sorting out the oiling, funny thing is when it dries it nearly looks the same. Will have to speak to the quarry tomorrow. Cheers.
Guest yamaha_man Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 I must say reading this thread leaves me eager to see the final result. Is the darkside calling me?
Guest Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 Is the darkside calling me? Yes ,diy is the true dark side . Cheers
Guest Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 Dark side or dark end of the street 56. More like kept in the dark like a mushroom Cheers
Dr Good Vibe Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 That's going to effect the black pearl 56.

Thanks for the update. Hopefully i can get it in the next 2 weeks. I won't mind it if it does not retain the dark oiled look.

I on the other hand wish to have my plinth as dark as possible, and have googled around a bit and may use something like this if my plinth is lighter in colour than I would prefer: http://www.thestonedoctor.com.au/shop/view/mb-6_stone_color_enhancer/11 Chris
Dr Good Vibe Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 Maybe 56 you could spray the slat for them
Guest Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 Maybe 56 you could spray the slat for them You have given me an idea ,black pearl with a bit of flattening base over the stone would look . That could look great on the speaker's give a nice frosted look indoors . Cheers
Dr Good Vibe Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 Yer check the price first $$$$$$$$ sorry I forgot you got mates.
ENIGMA Posted October 16, 2009 Author Posted October 16, 2009 I wouldn't paint them, the stone has a certain appeal. Might try a bit of clear on an offcut though & see how it looks. I spoke to the quarry, the slate is absorbing the oil, (large pores) need to keep trying and will also try a different oil. Cheers.

ENIGMA Posted October 17, 2009 Author Posted October 17, 2009 Ok, Played with the slate & oil today. When i first tried the oil the other day, i followed the instructions which said to shake tin gently & apply with a rag or cloth. As you apply the oil, the slate turns very dark, It didn't turn out any darker than original when it dried. Today, i shook the f#$..., shook the can really hard this time and applied the oil by cloth & other ways on some fresh slate. It stayed dark and looked really good this time. I think the oil/wax must have settled in the tin & i got it into action, plus i've discovered it is sensitive to cold temperature. So, once the polishing of the radiuses is done on Jaspers slate, out comes the oil for a one on one intimate session............might light some candles too. Just to clarify......with the slate, not Jasper. Cheers.
jaspert Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 You might know slate better than your wife soon.
ENIGMA Posted October 17, 2009 Author Posted October 17, 2009 Will post them when it is all pretty, at this point it looks the same as the earlier photos. Did look nice with the SP10 & my Encounter arm. It will be oiled soon once i buy the polishing discs. Plus, there will be pics of it in the near future with a special arm as well, you'll just have to wait for that one. Cheers.
Guest Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 Are you going to seal the oil with a coat of wax . Cheers
Guest Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 There is wax in the oil already. I thought there might be a sealing wax . Cheers
Guest yamaha_man Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 How about sealing the wax with some more oil?
