Guest Baron Posted August 16, 2004 Posted August 16, 2004 OK... You can buy a fantastic car audio system for (say) $5,000, yet with home-audio, that'd barely get you anywhere when it comes to state-of-the-art home audio equipment. What would be the problem of buying a quality car-audio system, and installing it in my home? 8) :?
audible Posted August 17, 2004 Posted August 17, 2004 Plenty. Firstly, car audio all powers from 12 volts dc, and a lot of car amps draw frightening amounts of current. You would have to factor in several hundred dollars worth of 12 volt dc invertor supplies to run it all. Next, car audio speakers are basically designed to work in side cars, off axis. when set up in a typical house, you would want to listen to the speakers on axis naturally, so the car audio speakers wont sound the best. Next, price will shoot you down as well. Currently, car audio dvd players are worth several hundred bucks where as you can buy a regular dvd player from jb hi fi for $99.00 and probably get a free movie thrown in with the deal. Then their will be little problems, such as the radio antenea, which is designed to be earthed thru the chassis of the car. you would have to adapt something to work in a house. Bottom line is its not feasible. If you have a good car stereo system you dont want anymore and you want to change to home equip, e-bay is probably your best answer.
Wrayza Posted August 18, 2004 Posted August 18, 2004 Simple solution - Make your garage you HT room, park your car in as normal, watch a tv through the windshield Nah, but you could actually get a nice sounding HT system with $5,000. Shop around, I think you'll be surprised.
Blackrazor Posted August 18, 2004 Posted August 18, 2004 You can get a heck of a nicer system with $5k for home than you can with car... speakers for home are well priced by and large, CD players and DVD players are cheap, the only thing thats horrendously overpriced in home audio is amplifiers, i mean 100w x 2 for $1300, wtf?!? I dunno what your prices are like in Aus, but over here you can get a Pioneer 7 channel HT receiver, DVD-A/SACD/CD player, Wharfedale Diamond 8.4 floorstanders, Diamond 8.1 rears, Diamond 8 centre and Powercube DX 12" sub for about $2400 NZ... thats a heck of a lot better sound than you'd get for that money in car audio... I think the difference is perceptual, what classifies as a 'high end' speaker in home audio is a lot higher up in the specs than a 'high end' car speaker system, mainly because 90% of the art of a home speaker is in the cabinet development
Guest Baron Posted September 1, 2004 Posted September 1, 2004 Hm... interesting... So the ideal system would be all home-audio with a meaty car-audio amplifier... Just need to have a nice little transformer to turn 240v into 12v (240v drawing 5amps = 12v drawing 100 amps)... Cheers Guys. Baron.

shiny_car Posted September 1, 2004 Posted September 1, 2004 i run over AUS$15K of car audio gear in the car, and i can say my home setup costing well under this eats it. home audio is far cheaper to achieve great soundstaging, imaging, depth, and clarity. it relies far less on installation quirks (and cost and modification), so much more forgiving in this regard. home audio also relies on little to no 'tuning', whereas tuning a car audio system is crucial (speaker levels, xovers, equalisation). re: DVD players...i didn't blink an eye (ok, not true) buying a DVD stacker worth $2.5K for the car, but come home-time...that seems outrageous! so i've found home audio is a cheaper proposition for superior results.
Blackrazor Posted September 1, 2004 Posted September 1, 2004 However, if you're like me, at then end of a day the last thing you have the time or inclination to do is sit down and listen to your music... but with my car system, i gets 25mins a day driving to work, and 25mins driving back, of flawless, lovely music... thats the attraction of car audio for me, it fits into my lifestyle and goes whereever i do
dazd Posted September 7, 2004 Posted September 7, 2004 agree with blackrazor here for say 5g you can definitely get a better home system, tehre are no costs realli with installation, and acoustically the environment you're placing it in is far superior to that of a car. having said that, for some reason music just seems more enjoyable in a car, perhaps because you've got nothing else to do, maybe because cruisn just puts you in a different state of mind, but yeah in a way home and car audio are almost different entities. you cant realli beat the detail, and imaging of a good home system, but then again you cant realli beat the rush of cruising down the street with your sub cranked up either. different courses for different horses
fuddbutter Posted September 8, 2004 Posted September 8, 2004 Originally posted by dazd for some reason music just seems more enjoyable in a car, i just love it when the midbass are kicking and you can feal it going through your body, and the sub bass. everything is so close. it's nice but home audio will always sound better.
SupG? Posted September 12, 2004 Posted September 12, 2004 i heard you loud and clear, i cant agree with u more there digital
