The guys south of the boarder certainly get treated to some great jazz with the festival. Fortunately some of the artists are making their way to Sydney. There will be a SNA contingent on the 7th at 505 for Alister Spence Trio/ Dawn of Midi. I have tickets for Charles Lloyd with Maria Farantouri and Chick Corea is tempting tempting tempting. 1
Viognier Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Are the Pixies still the real deal without Kim? By the reaction from the crowd last night at SOH the answer is yes. Great gig. 3

ferchersan Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 @@Viognier glad to hear it mate, I'm getting ready for tonight's show now. I think I'll stick around for Feedtime and The Dead C in the SOH Studio after the Pixies. Enjoy the ACO & The Presets tonight. That should be interesting. I've met Julian a few times, he's a bit of a classical buff. A real music lover 1

ferchersan Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 (edited) The Pixies minus Kim was excellent. New Kim sounds like old Kim, which is a compliment. I thought she could have done with a bit more volume in the mix, but how else would you have made her out to be the 'new girl'? I also managed to see a few local acts at RIP Society 5th Birthday and topped the night off with The Dead C. Let's not mince words. The Dead C are f.cking killer. So glad I stuck around for them. They went so far out, though I was right along with them the whole time. Free form freak outs played with the a brotherly intuition, I couldn't help but think they should do a collaboration with The Necks. I've had an excellent night out. Edit: just realised that I read today that The Necks and The Hard-Ons are releasing a split 7" next month. Mondo Bizarro, dudes Edited May 24, 2014 by ferchersan 2
Viognier Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 I made exactly the same comment to my friend after the show. She could have done with a bit more prominence of her vocals in the mix. She seems very modest and just hung back behind the rest of the band for the encore.

The guitars sounded great down there, right from the stage.

I was F30/31 and really enjoyed the sound. She was definitely having a great time, just when it came time to take a bow and wave to the crowd she hung back behind the guys even when encouraged to step forward.I had another Pixies moment last night at ACO/ Presets when they played Where Is My Mind ever so briefly. It was like one mega mix tape last night covering music from the dawn of time to a song called Continuum which was composed by Richard Tognetti and the Presets. There were moments of exquisite music last night and at times it was like Hot Dub Time Machine, and other times beautiful chamber music. It had potential to come across as corny and over ambitious but it worked. Most enjoyable. And great sound in the City Recital Hall. Looking forward to my next ACO show there. 2
Viognier Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 Enjoyed St Vincent last night at the SOH. Actually more than expected as not a big fan of the new album,as it just didn't gel with me. She certainly is an entertainer, and can move in those high heals. Lots of quirky dancing, rolling around on the floor whilst singing, big guitar sound. Sounded really good in the Opera Theatre given how loud it was. Some bass reverb from the electronic bass which rocked the place. Amazing to think that it was designed for opera and the variety of bands now playing there. 3 nights of Vivid and I am slowing down already. A rest tonight before Nils Frahm tomorrow.
Viognier Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 (edited) Does it get any better in Sydney. Vivid in full swing, the city has a vibrancy and energy about it. Not to mention the weather at the moment. Tonight was Nils Frahm in the Joan Sutherland theatre. His only Aus gig though he is coming back in October for a full tour. What an outstanding show. At times simple piano that is enough to bring tears to the eyes it's just so hauntingly beautiful and at other times pumping out full on electronica that had the place vibrating in places it shouldn't. I am sure they will pick up a few tiles from the sails on the ground outside in the morning that were dislodged during the performance. And what a performer - engaging, funny, humble, quirky. If he is coming your way in October then I'd recommend checking him out live, or grab his latest album Spaces which is a live album. One gripe re tonight - the damn air conditioners are so noisy. We sat near the mixing desk and could see that the ambient noise was 65 db, and at times when Nils was playing it was only 68db, so you heard lots of AC. Annoying. The AC is noticeable in both the Dame Joan and Concert Hall, but markedly more so in the Dame Joan. Time for grumpy old man to hit the sack. Edited May 27, 2014 by Viognier 4

Viognier Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 (edited) A mixed weekend for me and live music. Saturday night was Gary Numan at the Metro. First time I had seen him live and he did not disappoint. The perfect rock star performance. His voice still sounds like it did back in the last 70s. He played lots of stuff I was not familiar with as I have not listened to any of his new music but it was a thoroughly enjoyable. Great band also. Interesting crowd, I thought a couple of guys my age were candidates for heart attacks they were going so hard. I must say after seeing NIN recently and spending my time at the bar as I thought they were boring (It was the Ent Centre which is a horrible venue) Mr Reznor can still learn a lot from Mr Numan. Enormous amount of energy onstage and he gave it everything. And Sunday night kicked off with an interview at the SOH of Giorgio Moroder by Ignatius Jones. Thoroughly enjoyable, Giorgio is a real gentleman and had lots of great stories. Then to the Concert Hall for the Heritage Orchestra (including SNAer @@Bleek on trombone) doing the music of Giorgio Moroder, a couple of hours of the orchestra plus synths and band doing all the hits. Anna Calvi also sang a couple of classics. Giorgio did his Daft Punk spiel, but besides that didn't perform. Post orchestra It was into the Studio where Giorgio did a DJ set for over an hour and a half. Now don't tell anyone, but this lover of punk and new wave from the 70s and a fully paid up member of the Disco Suck fraternity was dancing away to all the hits. Giorgio really knows how to work the crowd and he was having a ball. He ended up doing 3 songs twice as neither he or the crowd wanted him to leave the stage. Again a very diverse crowd just having a great time. Disco may no longer suck in my mind but getting up for work in the morning certainly does. Edited June 1, 2014 by Viognier 5

evil c Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 (edited) Flap playing at Beaches Mornington Vic. this Sunday - saw these guys supporting Cat Empire and they were incredible! Taking the missus and youngest boy who's a handy trumpeter to show him some pro's in action! (only $20 which is a steal) FLAP! Melbourne band, Flap! makes music that sounds both old and new. Influenced by 1920’s prohibition-era dance bands, but with a hip modern groove. A good-times party band made up of kick-arse musicians. Jess Guille’s vocals are honey-sweet, while Eamon McNelis’ trumpet playing is a riot of colour and rhythm. Eamon won the prestigious national jazz awards for brass at the Wangaratta Jazz Fest in 2010. Edited June 3, 2014 by evil angelist
