Spearmint Posted May 4, 2005 Author Posted May 4, 2005 I'm surprised no one has mentioned these DVDs:Richard Clapton (Up & down the Glory Road?) - DTS Concert for George (Harrison) - DTS + 16:9 Peter Frampton - Live in Detroit - DTS + 16:9 Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense DD5.1 + 16:9 Also these multi-channel SACD/DVD-A/DTS-CD are amazing IMO: Steely Dan - Gaucho Donald Fagen - Nighfly Beck - Seachange <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I have just finished watching Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense. Thanks Garry for listing this title, bloody brilliant is all I can say, they certainly do things a little different, I mean this in a nice way.

The audio is very well recorded and very clear at all times. I would give this DVD Audio ****½ Video ****½ Content *****
mello yello Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 Good stuff Spearmint....its on my shopping list.....this movie got rave reviews in its day and helped put Johnathon Demme on the map. One id love to see again. BTW bit of an update on "Pulse"....for anyone interested http://www.pinkfloyd-co.com/pfco_news.html http://www.pinkfloydz.com/dvd_pulse.htm looking like June 05 at the earliest and judging by what Nick Mason says there seems to be a hell of a lot of work going into this one (remixing and recutting)....which can only mean one mother of a double DVD when its finally released.

Paranoid666au Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 anyone know of any good movies which really show off the EX flag? nobby It depends also what dvd player you have some don't see the flag at all while others get a bit confused switching in/out!! DigitalHT Nice HT setup cheers laurie <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It's a momitsu, it passes the flags through to my Rotel RSP1068 no problems. The issue is not just any surround track though, I'm looking for one that sends ALOT of info to the center backs, I'm thinking maybe the pod race... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> nobby wasn't there a special edition of "Seven" redone with 7 channels of audio. I've not heard that version but remember it came out specially when it came out. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yea there's a version of seven with DD EX and DTS ES 6.1. I haven't heard it in true 6.1 though. The DTS track definatly sounds better than Dolby Digital track to me too.
Spearmint Posted May 4, 2005 Author Posted May 4, 2005 June 5th - that's my birthday <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Err does this mean we are all invited to your party?
Mjr69 Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 June 5th - that's my birthday <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Err does this mean we are all invited to your party? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Sure, but you have to come dressed as your favourite Pink Floyd character.
hired goon Posted May 5, 2005 Posted May 5, 2005 G'day, I got informed last night that the Rotel 1068 on direct 2ch is not in fact direct the signal is still converted to digital & back again, i.e. the processor is still in circuit. Mind you I already had this inkling from when I hooked up a 1068 in 2ch mode to compare against my current Rotel analogue 2ch pre-amp, the difference was night & day in sound quality I've got the RSP-1068. Are you saying that analog bypass mode (which I use for two-channel) performs A/D -> D/A conversion? Can you provide a cite for this? I asked Rotel tech support once about this and I was told the following "The 'BYPASS' mode of the 1068 is incredible, in my opinion. This offers a direct bypass of the sound with only volume control." Also, which Rotel pre-amp were you using that was better than the RSP-1068? I once asked Rotel tech support about using a Rotel RC-1070 stereo pre-amp in place of the RSP-1068, and was told the following: "The RC-1070 would have superior sound because it has less chance of interference of the original signal but again, I think that this would be next to inaudible". Were you using the RC-1090? --Geoff

Were you using the RC-1090? --Geoff <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The information regarding the RSP-1068 was passed second hand to me by another member here. The pre I was using is the RTC-940AX, when we connected up the RSP-1068 in direct mode using the RMB-1080 & RCD-1072 there was an immediate change in the Sonics and sound stage. The 940AX is straight analogue i.e. no bass management or any other smarts also has tone defeat switch as well. I find it hard to believe a pure analogue unit as stated by Rotel regarding the RSP-1068 in direct mode can have this effect, also I notice no or very little change in Sonics with my setup when changing from direct to stereo except for the introduction of the subs. Look at the end of the day as I have stated before I am not about sound in its purest sense I am after a sound that I like & enjoy, you just need to look at what I have added to the signal chain from CD player to the pre/pro. When I heard the improvement in my system from the addition of the 1068 over both my Denon 3805 & RTC-940AX I was hooked, hence why I changed whether it affects the sound I don’t know but at the end of the day I now have a sound that I really enjoy.
RodN Posted May 5, 2005 Posted May 5, 2005 A parasound dealer in Melbourne told me that the 1068 did AD to DA conversion. That made sense in our findings in the difference of audio quality between the rotel analogue pre and the 1068 (in bypass mode). I don't know if this is true beyond his statements. I have a 1068 and am absolutely amazed daily in its 2ch sound quality.
RodN Posted May 6, 2005 Posted May 6, 2005 OK I just got it last night, this one is a MUST HAVE: Jean Michel Jarre - Aero (released this year) Has anyone heard this? It's a cd/dvd combo that goes for around $30 at JB. Unbelievable mixture of sounds delivered in the most 'complete' and stunning surround experience that I have EVER heard from any disk! There are components when they just have things like footsteps walking around the room - the effect is unbelievable in a dark room with the display off and really highlights difference in center back settings you may have. This one really is a must have for your system, particularly for testing out you rears to fronts to centre matching and positioning but also its a very relaxing listen too.
fattchoi1503559854 Posted May 7, 2005 Posted May 7, 2005 Jean Michel Jarre, yes that is one of my most favourite performer that I ever heard. I saw one of his live performance in China once and it was incredible. Thanks for the tip on this one. Will definitely pick it up when I next loiter in JB Hifi. Cheers.
sunmick Posted May 7, 2005 Posted May 7, 2005 yeah nobby years ago at Encel in Richmond i think they might have been the Stax headphones system if you picked up these headphones and this looped recording of someone knocking on the door ( sound FX ) and walking down the stairs and people talking etc etc .... but you could easily determine that they were infact in different positions in the room it was truly sensational if you closed your eyes etc etc sounds like a similar to this michael

"The Concerts in China" ... and it's a pretty good recording (4-star, IMO - but a bit harsh on "bright" systems).

I actually saw that concert on tv when I was in the UK at the time. I particularly love the way he 'fries' the synthesizer so effortlessly. Truly great stuff. Cheers.
Ted1503559509 Posted May 8, 2005 Posted May 8, 2005 the release of the recent concerts on DVD (2) keeps getting put off. Next month in UK now. Mjr69 Posted May 11, 2005 Posted May 11, 2005 The local JBHifi was out of stock but I picked up the Aero combo at the muses for $35.00 - I am listening to the CD at the moment - only halfway through - I haven't even tried the DVD and I am grinning from ear to ear. I now have a new demo disc Thanks for pointing this one out
