likwidsh0k,

Like you say, an inconvenient timeslot, so I have the series so far recorded on the PVR, although I haven't got around to watching the episodes yet.

I'm happy to share in a convenient format if you're able to download them from me.

does having all the grand design dvd's and magazines count to my fan admiration. the bonus with the dvd's is he does revisits to some constructs after to see how the owners got on over time. some are brilliant.

regards,g.

watched the first episode of wgh's and lost interest after, mainly because of the host.

World's Greenest Homes is not the most brilliant show in that (like much green marketing) it tends to either gloss over or misrepresent the details of the 'greener' aspects of each build and instead go for the 'isn't that just so cool, dude' line of thought.

Yes the houses are pretty and pretty to watch (and pretty expensive) but the show itself is just as shallow and vacant eyed as so many so-called Home Beautiful TV shows.

Which explains why GD is so different and sometimes such fun to watch in that K. McCloud (of the Clan McCloud?) is such a personality (as opposed to a pretty boy) that he kind of reflects some of the marvel of the viewers (are these people mad/stupid/insane/genius?) as they follow the build process...

Hmmm, that's not so good...

There can be only one Grand Designs, and what makes it so great is Kevin who I agree is brilliant and really knows his stuff and following the projects from the ground up. Great to see the owners throughout the process and also you get to see all the new tech and green materials that go into each house.

So I think for this show was always going be tough to properly show off their green credentials when they are complete, and does smack of Houses of the Rich and Famous.. albeit the environmentally friendly rich and famous, and agree about the host from the short bit I saw. But I am a huge architecture fan and still looks very interesting, and is leagues ahead of any of the other infotainment and reality-tv the idiot-box spews out nightly these days.

Ok, so WGH is not the greatest, but had some pretty cool stuff on it.

But GD is my favourite and the most enjoyable to watch.

No-one got this?..... ah well :)

On GD last night was the huge monstrosity with the kids bedroom that had 13 different walls and a column in the middle of it!

and sent the bloke bankrupt - as they say peacock one day feather duster the next!

Yeah you gotta feel for the guy.. heart attack, recession and then a fire.. but like he said himself was embarrassed by his own extravagance, ie using 3 blocks of land... and sticking a Ducati 916 on the wall?

Was an interesting build on the show last night alright. Was sad that the guy did have so many things go wrong but then I felt he didn't plan to avoid any of it.

Fancy building a house your wife hates? Or designing and building a structure that incorporated special windows you had not costed? (what was it about 35% of the whole build was the curved glass?) and the design was ....well shockingly bad to say the least.

And the idea of flogging off the two ajoining properties without a loss while there is a monstrosity being constructed next door was never going to fly.

That build was one persons ego-centric monument to himself and it failed. At least he tried - gotta give him that.

It was a bit ambitious, but no more than what you usually see.

I too was wondering how the windows could have been left so late, pity it wasn't completley finished to be able to judge it properly.

I liked the space, but there have been other homes on the show that were more impressive.

THe bike was a bit much to swallow, beautifull bike, interesting idea but the excution was poor. I would have put it in a large niche in the home cinema room (boys room) at least.

The mounted bike displays what the house is - the whole house is a boys room. That is why I don't believe it works. I thought the focus was all wrong. I could not see where any thought was put in about functionality of living or accommodating other people. The focus was all about the difficulty of building it and the over spec materials rather than the flow and use after it is built.

And that is the second time I've seen bikes displayed inside a house. Could it be because the show is UK based the weather is too bad to actually ride the bikes?

That place just seemed like a monument to the guy's ego, but I think he was beginning to see that after his health problems. The place just seemed poorly designed, with very inefficient use of space and the motorbike on the wall was just plain dumb. I liked their original house much better. Some people just don't know when to stop.

I'm a HUGE fan of GD :), the spin off show is not quite what GD is all about, and I get bored half way through. Last nights Final GD for the series was a bit of a let down. The guy just didn't have the 'CASH' to match his 'EGO' and you could tell the build was a complete compromise to his initial design, he just didn't want to pay for all the 'BLING' he wanted, which would of made the design work so much better. 'Curved Glass' OH so Yummy. 'Facet Glass' Ho Hum. Spoilt the look

and sticking a ducatti on the wall - he should have been able to afford to stick one of these on the wall - now that would have been classy

like 150000 pounds[$300000] vs.300000 pounds[$600000].

and if you thought the ducati was staying on the wall, think again, she is a nurse after all,ask dr good vibe.

I don't think the bike would be staying there for very long.

Did you see the look on the wife's face in the end, she'd had enough of the house.

The views were fantastic, and internal space was good. I'd be tempted to modify some of the internal walls and change the rooms.

The so called artistic stair case did nothing for the house. The wooden stair case in the farmers house a couple of weeks back was a far better design.

Not even any eco friendly products or green energy like what we have seen with other houses.

Some of the other houses have been much better than this one. I liked the one that was built from old car tyres and glass bottles. I thought it was going to be a real mess when they were building it, but in the end I thought it turned out really well. It seemed very inviting. I could live in a place like that.

Posted

You mean you guys in SA have stopped using tyres and have moved on to timber!:)

I agree, previous houses from non property constructors, were much better designed and executed.

The tyre one was a surprise, it did come out rather well & the quality of the finish was very good. Even the bottles looked good and were finished off well.

+1 agree on all accounts.. and ending up costing him next to nothing.

Just watched last weeks ep and you're spot on. First home was awesome, followed by a GD home and then...

""alicia silverstone"" couch, recycled wood table, bamboo chairs, recycled lolly wrapper placemats, and recycling the teabag paper.. poor guy..

Wakisch! Wakisch!

I hope for his sake/sanity when they showed them walking upstairs to go in the front door there is a downstairs boys room.. with a leather couch and tellie *in front* of the couch, pool/poker table, bar at one end and rack of guitars and hi-fi at the other. With some junk and leftover pizza-boxes lying around.

Still gonna watch it tonight though.

Couldn't agree with you more I've worked as carpenter on 2 projects like this in Sydney's eastern suburbs .All you could you hear coming from the guy's mouth was, I want, I will, I can, you better , me, me, me.In the end their the boss and its their money.

It can be difficult help people like that when they've a got a big idea, lots of money and are in full steam ahead mode.I've said before and I'll say again :) some people are really smart at doing dumb things.
