Didn't we get assurances from the management of Telstra that no jobs would be lost in the final sale of Telstra ?

Of course, John Howard denies everything.

Keep in mind that JWH is only responsible for the employees in the half of the business that is still government owned

Therefore JWH will only put 200 Telstra workers on the unemployment lines this year. That's doesn't sound so bad does it? Considering they are mostly bludgers?

Hey! None of this Johnny Howard bashing. I distinctly recall JH stating that 10000 workers wouldn't lose their jobs with Telstra on the way to privatisation. He kept his word, its really 12000 workers!

Looking at the state of the Telstra now, I can only shudder when I try to think how it'll cope with 10000 less workers. Maybe its time to find another creative way to sweep all those pesky service faults under the rug.

DrP, Do you really want to know how Telstra will operate with 10,000 less employees?

Riley..........I was a Telecom Tech some 10 years ago and with all the staff cuts then those that had to do all the installation and maintenance work were simply run off their feet trying to keep up with the work load.

There were definitely no bludgers then and I dare say no bludgers now.

Back then in '95 upper management of Telecom were actively engaged in closing down depots and unmanning exchanges with the intent of centralising the workforce, which ultimately made the whole organisation dis-co-ordinated.

This was a stratergy to frustrate the workforce to the point where those that did not get redundancy would simply leave out of stress. This has been an ongoing process and today's announcement of the loss of another 12,000 jobs is just part of that stratergy.

I have seen perfectly capable people who have given decades of service simply destroyed psychologicly through this evil process.

So don't you call them bludger's .....

I agree with ChickenMan, I have been a Telstra Tech for the past 12 years, and in that time the "bludgers" have been weeded out and made redundant. However there are now less staff left on the job than those that have left in the last 5 years. We can't keep up with the demand, and to make matters worse "contractors" many of whom don't have any training or experience, are now working in the network literally stuffing it. Yes the rest of us left will now take a "package" and move on to other careers, leaving the "highly skilled contractors" to service the network.

If you think Telstra's bad now, wait 5 years.

Cheers, "show me the package", Paul.

Now for an extra thick spreading of bullsh*t...

Mr Trujillo says servicing copper wire loops will no longer be needed, although copper wire will still be serving some rural customers for many years to come.

How the hell does Sol expect to get out of maintaining the aging copper network for at least 10 years!? Is it all going to evaporate and magically be replaced with their 3G voice and data service? Does he expect the ooodles of ADSL services out there to just magically work on non-existent copper? Man, I thought I needed to ready the flying pigs for DTV cutover at 2008, I'm going to have to call in an entire squadron for this one!

I think the staff cuts are needed  just to fund Sol and his cronies new packages

Yeah! They shouldn't get paid so much while the workers who are doing all the hardwork now will get fired in 5 years time. I mean, who in their right mind will work properly given these circumstances?

 Sorry, was being jokingly stereotypical of the old days.

Regarding previous redundancies and incompetent contractors, some friends of friends of mine took rather nice packages from Telstra some time ago whilst they were weeding out the 'bludgers'. They were re-employed through a contracting company to Telstra performing exactly the same duties. When that contracting company decided to downsize and remove dead wood, they were again given another handy payout. These blokes are now working for another contractor to Telstra and are surely racking up more future redundancy points. And I'm sure they can't be the only ones. I do understand the current Telstra employee's plight. The worthwhile employees were kept, the crap was paid out. Now the crap is in some cases earning more than the direct employee and producing lesser results.
