gusangora Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005 Topic and description says it all. Why is it that a Doctor learns all about the human body except for eyes and teeth? Are these not medical items? The tax man says that I can claim dental and optical costs as medical expenses when looking at the $1500 threshhold (20% rebate thereafter) but will not allow a Medicare claim. Why is it so? nb Can you guess that I wear contact lenses (extended wear), currently having root canal, just paid $2500 for oral surgery for my son, both boys need braces next year ($7000 each!), and I don't have any private health insurance cover! There goes the SXRD RPTV, Ruby projector, holidays, etc, etc. Anyone willing to make donations (A Current Affair style), contact me for bank account details. I promise to put the money to frivolous use.
ray888 Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005 Wow, you want everything for free? Wake up. Nothing in life is free. Somebody always pay.
anthonysimilion Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005 If you can afford it, private health cover isn't such a bad item. Personally, I think it's essential. A person can't be doing too badly if they're spending thousands on home theatre equipment (not talking about you specifically), and I think private health insurance is a lot higher up on the priorities list.
mello yello Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005 Wow, you want everything for free? Wake up. Nothing in life is free. Somebody always pay. When I pay 42 cents in every dollar I earn, yes I either want some of that back in the form of basic services that it was intended for......or a reform of the tax scale. Spose optical and dental are classed as "consumables " sort of like toners or ink cartridges. $7000 for braces? unbeleivable....Id ask for a breakdown of costs (raw materials, armchair rental, time away from yacht/golf course)
rosco99 Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005 Topic and description says it all. My opinion is we shouldn't have medicare anyway, except for injuries. We need to look after ourselves.
zorg1503559539 Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005 we pay enough taxes I agree with mello yello yet our hospitals our a disgrace... Don't forget the medicare levy has also been introduced and increased as a means of double dipping in addition. In Taiwan they take a small amount like $20 each month from your salary and that covers all your medical expenses including dental 100% and no extortionate waiting periods like here. My friend waited 9 months for an operation here in a public hospital and they stuffed up the operation, he is not sure whether or not he has to go back yet for a 2nd one. yes you are crazy if you don't have private health insurance.
ray888 Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005 Want free dental cover? Marry a dentist...LOL
DrP Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005 <santa>Without good vision, you are blinded to what is going on around you. Without teeth, you have difficulty with speach so no one will listen to you. Its one gigantic Howard Government scheme to suppress dissenters!</santa>

Without teeth, you have difficulty with speach so no one will listen to you. Its one gigantic Howard Government scheme to suppress dissenters!</santa> Sorry to disappoint! It is the dentists that have the scheme! My last dentist visit was in 1988 due to a minor tooth pain. An Xray and minor examination cost me $80(way back then) and found that I may have chewed a bit hard on a nerve! I brush my teeth once a day(every morning) and occassionly at other times for social reasons! People that I know that have regular dental visits, regularly floss and mouthwash, brush twice a day, they are the people that have huge dental bills! DENTISTS ARE A SCAM
DavoNogo Posted December 1, 2005 Posted December 1, 2005 Sorry to disappoint! It is the dentists that have the scheme! So when you have an outgrown tooth, will you be doing it "CastAway" style? ie. with the blade of a pair of ice skates?
DrP Posted December 1, 2005 Posted December 1, 2005 Don't be insane! Have you seen how much an iceskate blade sharpener costs these days?!!
riley454 Posted December 1, 2005 Posted December 1, 2005 So when you have an outgrown tooth, That means your are deformed, so let Darwin's nature take its course!
Stevob Posted December 1, 2005 Posted December 1, 2005 Riley, I was like you, didn't go to a dentist for 13 years. Had a hole in a tooth (yes I brush once daily and for extra-curricular activities also ) and it worked it's way through to the nerve which showed up as a bit of sensitivity to hot/cold. Ignored that, waited a bit longer, then whammo, felt like somebody hit me in the face with a baseball bat. $1,600, six visits and some immense pain taught me to get a check-up every year.
mello yello Posted December 1, 2005 Posted December 1, 2005 Nice to see you got your Modem fixed riley That’s blarrdy beautiful that is…over on the other thread about druggies you propose a “health farm” where anyone who is that way inclined can be locked away and given their poison of choice indefinetly while poor little Brooke whos Mum is a War Widow and had a stroke recently and is partially paralysed from the waist down and cant work and doesn’t have any source of income but handouts from the Smith Family and Mission Australia to augment her modest fortnightly payments from Social Security which barely cover her greedy landlords extortionist demands for weekly rent and rising fuel and food prices, has to tell poor blue-eyed sad faced teary eyed toothless Brooke that Mummy cant afford to get her smashed teeth from a bike accident fixed because our Feral Treasurer decided to spend it all on some junkie named Fingers down at the local “health farm” and suggested some geeza named Darwin should sort it all out. Shame on you Treasurer riley.

DavoNogo Posted December 1, 2005 Posted December 1, 2005 remember to breathe Mello. I knew some people that spoke like that in real life... You would never hear them breathe, they would just keep going and going and going and going (they were twins). Try to introduce them the concept of a "full stop" and they'd just look at you funny

riley454 Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 Nice to see you got your Modem fixed riley Wasn't the modem that caused my absence for 37 minutes, it was arguing with my local quack GP about what is an acceptable level of 'supposed' toxins that a human can engulf. Luckily he is 6 foot seven and we don't see eye-to-eye. The 'moment of clarity' that was gained from the discussion was: If I continue to drink and smoke at the same levels that I have been doing for many years, then my health is likely to require some medication, in possibly ten to fifteen years! Luckily I found a current political parallel. If I decide that I enjoy carrying a small package from Singapore, I could be dead in 3 years. Living the good life rules!
