Is the true nature of an Audiophile that of a journeyman? Do we ever settle on a system and forget about the gear? I know some of us stop searching but it is often money, room size, WAF or some other factor that decides for us. Is there an end in sight ever?

For me I honesty don't think there is an end to it all[around 40 years for me now!].............an end would take all the fun out of it for me anyway!:D The love of the music is the purpose and is the constant..........I'm always willing to consider other equipment to replay the music.

Cheers,

Keith

I'm not an audiophile and don't have audiophile gear, but I can't see it ever being finished for any of us. We are doomed forever with a constant "what if?" hanging around us.

Audiophile, satisfied? No, never. Not even because constant need to upgrade. Unfortunately the best audio devices are still so far from live music experience and always will be, so this chase will never end, no matter what.

So better accept this fact, cut your chase and enjoy music :D

Wrong on both counts Grumps, I think I know you well enough to know you love your audio and that fits the definition for audiophile. When you start talking about audiophile gear, does that mean that my system that costs $2k for example mean that I don't love my music................and the bloke with the $50k system does?

I think the term audiophile has been used to much and shoudn't be used to describe equipment.............high end is becoming over used too!

Anyhow, I've carried on enough............:D

I think sometimes its just that we have had enough of "this" and want to see what "that" is like. I see guys going from SS to tubes and back again. And viceversa.

I dont think its being completly satisfied. Just saisfied for now........

Audiophile satisfied never. there is alway something new " better " and I think we are always looking for that "gold at the end of the rainbow". But it keeps moving - we get something we love then slowly over time we think well if i change this it might just be that much better. I don't think its an issue of how much you spend - it is just the endless " what if's ". or the fear that I don't have quite the right synergy. oh it is endless.

I'm not sure that i'm the typical audiophile, as for me hifi is both an engineering hobby as well as about enjoying high quality music.

I suspect that the journey ends when perfection is attained... therefore never :D

I have stopped buying equipment now because I am completely satisfied with my system.

I am now dedicated to buying better quality recordings of albums and cd's I already own.

Hence, I'd consider myself a music lover rather than an audiophile. An audiophile for me is someone who's more concerned with the gear than the music / art.

...not really cause like all good hobbies it can be expensive and for most it probably comes down to how much dough you can spend...:D

I reeeeaallly hope my upgraditis should be cured for a decent period now considering the cash I've just forked out for my new system.

Do we ever settle on a system and forget about the gear?

Absolutely. I've done it 13 times so far and when I receive the new amp I've just ordered I'll have my final, final system. :D

Certainly for me as opportunities arise due to increased income, new improved premises I relish the chance to upgrade my gear. I thoroughly enjoy my music and the gear I have at the time but need a 'seachange' in hifi gear every now and again. Its part of the fun of hifi and hopefully never fades from my life.

i dont know that audio is much different to any other hobby

we have paupers and millionaires penny pinchers and big spendes rolling stones that r never happy others that have the same system as 20 years ago.

those that only ever bought 1 system at $2K do not appear on SNA they r the lucky ones who just listen to their music.

I think there r foundation stones in my systems with which i am happy.

minimalism no pre amp in any 2 channel system for me - full range or dual concentric speakers or at most 2 way.

Low powered amplifiers valve ot T amp

Cable the best no name high quality hobbyist built inter connects and power cable i can source.

power conditioning does make a MINIMAL difference so i will use it but under same conditions as above low cost alternatives which means UPS for me.

Subs are for home theatre

TT provide best SQ so build a better system here.

now some on these r predetermined i live in a Victorian terrace row small rooms close neighbours.

I enjoy chamber music and jazz -low power and valves go well here -but its chicken and egg!

i will never change my speakers in my main systemS i am happy and could never afford better than i now have so as mentioned above $$ or lack thereof is relevant.

but even if i won tatts .....................

not really worth saying more

but the themes above would be unlikely to change ..tannoy wesminsters perhaps but they wouldnt fit.......

so what decides what...............

as a golfer after some experimentation ive settled on 1 set of clubs1

9 months since I bought my last piece of "kit". I am completely satisfied and in awe of the sound.

....then there's blu-ray...is it mature enough for me to purchase yet...

...my Home theatre sound processor is 11 years old and if I go to blu-ray I'll need to upgrade that so I can hear the hi-def sound onboard a blu-ray disc.

Maybe I should just wait until the next home-theatre "standard" emerges...then I will be old enough that my hearing is completely gone and I can forget it all....

i can happily say i am satisfied and will not upgrade any part of the system for a while.

However, i will add to the TT collection, BUT THATS NOT UPGRADES

rather additions.

some people like 4 arms, i like 4 turntables, maybe 5 :D

No end of course. It's a circle.

I think unless you are very unlucky you will, sooner or later, find a system that will both stretch your finaces so far, and also fulfil your audio expectations so well, that any further improvement would be completely imposible within the bounds of your own pecuniary circumstances.

That's not to say that you will be entirely and completely satisfied, nor that you won't make the mistake of guilding your own particular lilly with tweaks or incidentals, or even new items of technology as we are tempted by the devil consumerism.

But surely unless you have access to huge amount of discretionary spending money, a practical line must be drawn eventually,.....mustn't it?
