I've got a tinyUSB2. I used a 2-way splitter to split the signal so I can use my roof antenna for the lounge room tv(normal analouge tv) & the tinyUSB2.

When I had the antenna cable connected directly(without splitting) to the tinyUSB2 I got 75-80% signal strength & 95% quality for ch 7,9 & 10. ABC & SBS had 70-75% signal strength & 93% quality. Everything was perfect.

After using the splitter ch 7,9 & 10 signal strength reduced to 70-75% & 93% quality. ABC signal strength reduced to 68% & 90% quality. Still all the channels are watchable, no lagging. The problem is SBS signal strength reduced to 56% & 60% quality. I get picture & sound but it lags badly.

Is there an easy way to fix this? I don't wanna spend a lot on some signal booster so I can get SBS working.

This would have halved the original signal level to each device. What type of splitter did you use? Shielded, F-connector, good quality?

Just check each cable from the splitter is OK by trying the Tiny USB on each, see if you get the same readings. One cable may have poor connections.

What type of connectors did you use? Basic PAL type, screw on F-connector, crimped/compression F-connector?

You probably need to look at boosting this now, but that is not always straightforward with digital signals (and is not really preferred over getting a better quality signal into the system in the first place). Maybe try and get something on a return basis if it does not improve things.

Short of that, you need to increase the receive signal level before splitting. That may include a new antenna with more gain, better cable for the downlink, better connectors and shielded spitters etc.

All of which unfortunately cost money.

You split signal in half you loose signal strengh ( 3db ) ( whatever in %) signal boosters would help the UHF ( SBS ) prices vary , try Dick smith $39

Thanx for the replies guys. I had this splitter for ages now.

This is whats written on it.

I don't think I'll buy the signal booster.

When checking the cables I found that with one cable(10m from where the splitter is to my pc) the signal is low for SBS. With the one that goes to the tv its ok. The 10m cable is white & has no markings on it, its thinner than the RB6. The cable that goes to the tv is RB6 Dual Shielded 75Ohm.

So its a cable problem right?

Sounds like you have used a 10m flylead.

Yes, these have a substantial loss and you should try replacing it with with RG6 before considering an amp.

Reliable reception is only as good as the weakest link in your antenna system.

Certainly sounds like it.

kpothuwila, here is a note I put in a response to someone else a while back. Seems relevant.

"Be careful using long cheap flyleads. You are probably better off having someone make you up an extension lead from Quadshield coax cable, with good connectors.

A friend of mine in some new flats tried extending his Foxtel and TV outlets from one side of the room to the other to his relocated plasma TV. The Foxtel stopped working, and the analog TV had poor signal.

He had purchased some long leads from DSE that the guy had assured him were OK for digital (Foxtel was discussed). They were hopeless, and I made him up some new leads. They worked fine."

I bet that splitter was introduced on ordinary Joe Blogh market ages ago, which means three things:

- inferior quality

- no F connectors

- high loss

You can even increase this bu connecting the things incorrectly anywhere on the line.

IMHO, replace the splitter with some decent one (F connectors) and you'll be ok.

As charlesc already wrote, the problem can be anywhere due to poore installation, used parts and/or antenna.

Get someone with decent knowledge and digital meter if you have any further problems after replacing your splitter, and as was suggested, get someone to MAKE you flylead with RG6 quad shield and crimp or compression connectors. You'll be surprised by the difference that that can make.

Cheers

Good point scorpio, missed that the first time through. It probably is a weak point.

kpothuwila, the Jaycar metal-box (shielded) splitters are not too bad, if you have a Jaycar near you. Even better if you can get a Foxtel approved one though.

So many of them are made in China, and you don't really know how good they are. Good brands are ones like Graetz, Transmedia, Fracarro. The 'premium quality' inductive type are probably the best. Almost any with Foxtel approval are a safe bet.

Thanx for the suggestions guys.

Is one these F connector splitters ok? These are the only ones I found on DSE & Jaycar sites. If one of these is not ok where can I buy the Foxtel approved ones in Melbourne?

Two-Way 'F' Connector Splitter(DSE)

Two Way Splitter - F Connectors - Die Cast(Jaycar)

Two Way TV Splitter with Power Pass - F Connectors - Die Cast(Jaycar)

Thanx for the help

Of those shown, I'd probably go for the more expensive Jaycar model, the LT3046.

Laceys.TV in Melbourne certainly have Foxtel approved splitters. Give them a call and find out where their nearest reseller to you is.

Well, they should be OK, especially last one, but I'll rather go for a little bit better quality like Ikusi, Bitek, Hills ...

Anyway, you're on the right track m8.

Where can i get myself a good coax cable thats 10m or 15m long?
NickFritz,

You haven't said where you are (if you want more "local" suggestions.) RG6 Quadshield is avalable in cut lengths by the metre from DSE & Jaycar.
