I could barely hear JJJ on both 105.7 (Sydney) and 102.1 (Newcastle) on my walkman in Erina and other areas of Gosford. 102.1 came in pretty strong around The Entrance and Wyong but both frequencies were horrible once you dropped into the Gosford area. Could JJJ use the tx site used by ABC FM in Gosford?

JJJ obtaining an FM translator in the Gosford area will not happen until NBN stops analogue broadcasting on VHF-3, as there are no spare FM frequencies in the Central Coast left.

When NBN does this, I could see JJJ picking up this frequency for their Gosford translator: 91.7 MHz.

Gosford already has two ABC services being re-transmitted on FM: ABC Sydney on 92.5 MHz (11am-12pm & 1-3pm is local for the Central Coast) & ABC Newsradio on 98.1 MHz.

Would JJJ need the tx site at Somersby (the 1 that Sea FM use)? They could probably use a smaller site just to cover Gosford/Woy Woy/Terrigal. Towards The Entrance and Wyong 102.1 reception is fine.

I've noticed you havent mentioned Tuggerah so far. Hows reception there?

Last time I was in Wyong, 105.7 was much better than 102.1

what freq?! There isn't much left. They could share whatever newsradio or abc local radio has. What about ABC fine music?

I think the intention is to have 102.1 and 106.1 cover the Central Coast as well as Newcastle, thats why they havent been given repeaters like the other ABC stations that arnt tx'd from Newie on FM. I think 102.1 and 106.1 push out more power to the South then the other Sugarloaf FM stations with the intention of covering the Central Coast.

JJJ and ABC Classic FM from Newcastle DO operate at higher power towards the Central Coast for that reason, but south of Bateau Bay, I would not describe the reception as 'adequate' (nor around Wyong/Tuggerah)... Ditto the Sydney transmissions provide adequate coverage south of Gosford only.

The ABC will need to install translators on the Central Coast for these two stations, but as dtv-campbelltown said, a lack of suitable frequencies is the main problem at the moment.

The reason why (I think) Local and News Radio were given preference for 92.5 and 98.1 over JJJ/Classic FM are:

1. To establish a LOCAL ABC on the Coast (even though 702 Sydney and 1233 Newcastle between them cover the Central Coast pretty well).

2. News Radio isn't as well covered on the Coast as the other stations.

There are two frequencies available 91.7 and 100.5mhz. 91.7 can only become available after NBN clears band 2. So there is capacity to have JJJ and ABC Fine Music FM. Best option would be for 50+ fm to change frequency with News Radio on 98.1 and News Radio take up 93.3mhz. and then have the national broadcasters on 91.7, 92.5, 93.3 and 100.5mhz and then increase the EPR to the same level as Sea, Star and 2GO (16kw) to provide complete coverage for the Coast. Or in the worst case 2kw Omni Directional from Mt Pennag / Somersby.

Could 99.5 be used in Gosford? I know that there's a service in Katoomba about to start using this frequency, with an ERP of 200w but could it still be used in Gosford, perhaps at 200w or lower?

No dice I'm afraid for 99.5. Rhema 99.7 (Sugarloaf) would cause severe interference. 99.5 would also be problematic for 2NSB listeners (99.3).

Not as problematic as Rhema is for 2SSR in Sutherland. There was a bit of an oversight there with Rhema coming over 2SSR even within 2SSR's licence area during tropo.
