Okay guys, I have just picked up a S97 from JB HiFi in Kotara, Newcastle and they gave it to me for $285. I could probably have haggled with them but I was in a hurry. For anyone interested they have 6 left but they are not readily seen as they are in boxes stacked up near the ceiling above the TV's.

Cheers

I live 4 hours from adelaide but was in Melbourne over the weekend and picked up the S97 for $264 because I know someone who works there. They only had 2 left at the time.

Hi Schmick,

I looked all over the Brissy region for them 1 week ago and the only store even remotly close was at JBHiFi Robina Town Centre. They had about 8 left, so if you are prepared to travel the 45mins-1hr drive they might still have stock.

Also they are aware they are the only JB with stock at the moment so be prepared to work for a good price, took me a good 1/2 hour to get them down to a price of $280.00, but it is well worth it as the PQ is great, as to is the improvment of music CD's over my newish samsung DVD player.

Good Luck

Disco.

Bretta If desperate try ringing around retailers some may post them, you may have to pay to get one though. GG, HN etc still had them in Sydney but not at the JB clerance price! But from reviews of this player many thought they good value at $499!

Hi all,

It is possible to ask your local JB to get one sent in from another JB store that still has stock. My local JB got 2 shipped in from Perth on my request (couldnt ship just one unit for some reason  ). They still did it for a price of $275 :D

The whole process took about 3 weeks and a few visits and phone calls, Perth didnt receive the first faxed order apparantly. But all's well that ends well. So try talking to your local jb manager. Good luck!

PS Thankyou heaps to the JB sales guy, if you happen to be reading this :P

AndyM,

Followed your suit in ascertaining one of these fine DVD Players... I called every store I could think of in Brisbane, including JB-HiFi @ Robina whom another member posted still had stock of these fine players only last week! I couldn't find one of them anywhere... Only place was Harvey Norman in the Brisbane CBD which was a display model and they still wanted $400+ for it!

I called the Bondi (NSW) JB HiFi store out of curiosity, again, thanks to another Member saying they had stock, and found out they still had 2 left (one in box and one display)... I immediately contacted my local JB Hi-Fi to arrange a stock transfer, first time with no success with JB in the Brisbane CBD, but went to my local Kedron Store this evening and put in my order! The sales guy said he saw one store in his computer had 14 of them, not sure whom it was, but he is pretty adament he could get me one! Just for interest sakes, apparently when my local guy called the Bondi store, the dude had sold the only 'non-display' S-97 they had, even though there stock was still showing as 2 on the JB System, but to be honest, this guy didn't seem like he wanted to ship it up to Brisbane anyway, so might have been fobbing off my local guy...

Anyhow, I paid $270 for the Player and $30 for the shipping from whichever JB store it may come from around Australia... Very happy with my Local guys help and persistance, so hopefully should have a new S-97 next week sometime! If not, full money back refund...

YAY! :D

Myer in Adelaide Rundle Mall had a stack of 5 S-97's last Friday stickered with a $245 price tag as part of their current sale. I didnt get one when I saw them but when I came back later that morning there were only 2 left, both of which which I grabbed. I dont know if any of their other stores stock them however.

I bought one of these babies on the weekend from HN. Similar situation - the only (last) one they had was a display model - sticker price $499.

Thanks to this thread, I told the sales guy that the S-97 regularly sold for around the $270-$280 mark. He rang me back that afternoon with a best price of $250. I went in the next day and pushed for $200 - best he could do was $220. Sold. One very happy customer. Full credit to the HN sales guy - great to deal with and very helpful.

Haven't spent a lot of time tweaking the S-97 as yet, but my initial impressions are very favourable. This is a top little unit.

Being ex-display, the manufacture date was October 05, so upgraded the firmware last night from 362-364 - very simple process which took less than 5 mins (thanks to the AVS forum) and a noticeable improvement to the macroblocking which was apparent before.

Love the sound quality. Surround has gone to another level compared to my old Sony and is very clean and well detailed. Using HDMI to drive A/V to the plasma has freed up the stereo L/R outputs which I've run to the CD input and set to analogue. With the 'audio only' mode on the S-97, I've noticed a subtle difference - slightly warmer sounding. Nice touch.

Another little bonus is the extra Panasonic warranty. Didn't take out the HN extended warranty, but for $25 can upgrade factory warranty from 1-3 years. I think it was $89 for an extra 4 years.

The only gripe that I (well, her indoors) has is that there is no child lock - my 18 month old is fascinated by the blue light and is constantly opening/closing the tray - can't keep him away...

Cheers

Great price Paul, very well done! I too would appreciate that link. Mine is a Sept 2005 with 362 firmware. I thought 362 was the latest so thanks for the heads up.

Paul, I know I am being lazy - where is the link to the upgrade?, you just burn onto CD? Mine was manuf August 05 I think.

Nice speaker choice btw....

Zorg,

Thanks mate. Love the focals.

Check out p58 of the AVS link:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread....2&page=58&pp=30

- post 1721 gives you the download link - about 8mb

- post 1737 gives you the destructions

Spot on - burn file to CD and put disc into player - instructions details the rest - just make sure not to turn off DVD player whilst upgrading.

Cheers

IS that the only fix with the 362->364 firmware?

Pretty sure it's the main fix. AVS might elaborate further - didn't have time to read thru all the posts...

Done. I think the novelty is starting to wear off!

To think I paid around $250 more 8 months ago for the S97 compared to todays prices, but hey it works out an extra $4 per week, so the enjoyment has been worth it.
