Still reading more and investigating.

Down to consideration of the DV9500 and 9600.

A 9500 can be had for less and i'm unsure if the 9600 is going to give me a noticibly better video experience (both almost the same in audio I have read).

I don't mind last years model cheaper if the new model is not any better .

I pretty well think it will be the DVD player and HT-STB going into a PE8720 as my big-screen setup. Either both directly in or through a HDMI switching box (assuming one can be found that doesn't screw the signal :D). or maybe DVD via hdmi and T via component.

Edit: confused some stuff from a few articles :P... removed my dumb question.

I can't help you out much as to the relative performance of the 9500 and 9600 as I made a conscious decision not to read anything about the 9600 once I bought the 9500. That's the secret to HT happiness. :P

You can buy HDMI switchers (Geffen make some good ones). Being digital they won't degrade the signal. They will either work 100% or they won't work at all.

As for video cables, do yourself (and the rest of us) a favour and buy them from here:

HT Custom Cables

They're an Australian company, have really excellent service and the quality of their gear is excellent. The last thing we need is another thread with someone with cable related problems because they tried to save $50 by buying some cheap cable off ebay (not to say that some of them aren't good, just that they're more of a gamble). You'll see they also sell HDMI switchers as well. As for your dumb question, just feed 720P from the DVD player to the PJ. (You need to be faster on the edit :P)

I'm not sure how DVI would be useful to me as an output in regard to the 576i limitation. If component and HDMI are very similar then maybe it will make no difference to me (barring the 1080 output of course... problem with that is I'll want a 1080i/p pj :P).

without a comparative review I doubt i'll ever figure out which is going to give the best HD output... but I think it comes down to the 9600 being as good or better in picture with future-proofing. THe 9500 is excellent still and cheaper.

The 15 yr old at Hardly Normal assured me that a full Monster cable setup would give the best results. HAHAHAAHa...... yes... i'm still laughing 2 weeks on (he was subsequently found hanging from the most expensive noose on record - a 2.5m monster component cable :P).

I know that a system is the sum of all parts so I wont embarass myself by running $5k of audio gear on a $4 spool of 30 guage wire. I also know what i'm doing with cables (just not the rest of my system hehe) so no posts from me in that regard!

I was perusing the lindy site (aussie too I think) but htey had no specs on the cable they use that I found, and now have a second choice with HT custom so thanks heaps :P.

Yes, component and hdmi may be similar in quality. The component 576i is what I am using ex my denon 3910 (into a vp30). My ISF calibrator preferred it to the hdmi 576p option for that player. I think the Pio969/989 can do 576i from hdmi, so is the budget choice for feeding a vp30, altho I guess you are not considering that option anymore

I'd also take a look at Cliff Electronics for cables.

I bought a roll of the Canare speaker cable from them... very reasonable pricing for such a well shielded cable.

when I have to shift house at the end of the year i'll be ditcing all of my unshielded copper and upgrading to some better quality cable. My interconnects and antenna fly-leads etc are fine though.
