HomerJ Posted October 31, 2006 Posted October 31, 2006 (edited) where did you source it from HomerJ? Last one from Tasman AV (MEL). They priced matched SoundCorp's Greenguide ad from last week. I'd phoned Trevor Lees but no stock as reported earlier. I was tossing up between the Pearl and new Sharp 20000 DLP. The $6k price difference convinced me to go with the Pearl. TommyGNR Posted October 31, 2006 Posted October 31, 2006 I just picked up a Pearl yesterday and the scaling is way better than my previous Sharp 9000. Both 480p and 576i from DVD. I'm also very impressed with contrast/blacks. Now where can I get my hands on a new HD-DVD player? What's the recommend US source? The added resolution is crying out for a larger screen. Looks like another upgrade there too... Any recommendations much appreciated. What sized screen are you projecting on to, and from what viewing distance? ALso, what DVD player are you currently using?
HomerJ Posted October 31, 2006 Posted October 31, 2006 (edited) What sized screen are you projecting on to, and from what viewing distance? ALso, what DVD player are you currently using? My current screen is a 72" wide (183cm) 16x9 LP Morgan Galleria with Novares material. Its in a big room. Sitting position is about 3.6m but often watch footy/music from a bar that's 6 or more metres back The Pearl can put out nearly double that screen size from almost same pos as current projector (and looks awsome even with a 3m+ wide picture. My current DVD is a Pioneer 733A (progressive only on NTSC) - component outs only. I'll keep this for SACD & DVD-A. Edited October 31, 2006 by HomerJ

HomerJ how much is the Sharp XV-Z21000 going to retail for as the only info I could get was that it would be here end of November?
HomerJ Posted October 31, 2006 Posted October 31, 2006 HomerJ how much is the Sharp XV-Z21000 going to retail for as the only info I could get was that it would be here end of November? Hi Spero (long time since I've 'spoken' to you - not since the early days of DLP/HD I think)... This from Carlton Audio (MEL) website: XV 21000 1920 x 1080 DLP Projector $12995.00 I have a contact that says he can get the 21000 at 'trade price' - not yet confirmed (but they could knock about $4k off the original 9000 RRP) I'm not sure if the $12995 is RRP or Carltion Audio's special price.

Might have to get one Only down side is it doesn't support 24p input for judderless pans I beleive. Just waiting for the Greg Rogers review from WR. It will be his next review.
TommyGNR Posted October 31, 2006 Posted October 31, 2006 OMG, nothing makes me less likely to shop at a store than when they rubbish superior products simply because they don't sell them. What the hell is this rubbbish from CAV We certainly love our top flight projectors, and now there is a new kid coming to town. This sleek black baby will be released in November at a price point that is at last realistic for a 1080P projector. Those of you in the knowledge loop will know that the few DLP 1080 devices that have been released into Australia have been hovering at the 25K plus price for some time now. There have been the Sony LCOS devices with their overstated contrast ratios and potential colour degradation issues available at the $12995 type price but they were always a stop gap awaiting the arrival of DLP virtues combined with that magic resolution....Carlton Audio Visual is pleased to announce that it will be exclusively offering the XV 21000 at the $12995 price point from late November onwards. There is a calculated risk in this for ourselves and Sharp...we are going straight to the future "go" pricing of the product to offer immediate marketplace competitiveness in-extremis, a realistic upgrade purchase for existing projector users that avoids the early adopter stigma and price sting that is commonly associated with the release of a product in a new technology category..in other words you will be able to buy one of these devices in confidence knowing that it won't suffer a dramatic price drop during model run and that it isnt a dreadfully overpriced sting above current 1280 x 720 reference devices... A price point at last realistic for 1080p? Ummm, $13,000 is only 2k less than a VW100 which has been here since january. Or the $VW50, selling for literally half the price, already here?? Potential colour degradation issues??? Hmmm, news to me, but i rather potential colur degradation to confirmed RBE and screendoor

Spero D. Posted October 31, 2006 Posted October 31, 2006 From the web:Whatever that means? Wait for Greg's review, but sounds promising. Of course the Pearl handles 24Hz. From AVS- I have change to play around a Sharp Z20000.Sharp is quieter but not by much. I cannot get the 1080p24 to work on the sharp whether using HDMI or DVI. Marantz's bild quality is much superior, I was kind of suprise the sharp's quality's worst than the Benq 8720 consider the price point. when the ISF came in and did the calibration on both, he said the Marantz is slightly sharper from his measurement but I cannot really tell when I watched movies on them. I like the colors better on the sharp though. Motion seem a little bit smoother and Blacks seem to be a little deeper on the Marantz, overall I felt the Marantz has slightly more 3d to it. Marantz's has less background noisy from the dark scenses but the sharp's cleaner overall. My immpressions are from my from watching HD DVDs Batman Begins twice on each, Constantine and Charlie and the chocolate factory. I only used the high Contrast mode on both with my 137" highpower. Mike And from Alan Gouger on 1080P 48hz- I did not try 24 with the Sharp but I did feed it 1080P 48 and it stutters. The pans were not very smooth. I think 60hz is the limit for that machine. Just have to wait for the Greg Rogers review. Would love to get the Marantz VP-11S1 as I have been very happy with mine but it is to expensive here at $24,999. If the Sharp is close (when Greg Rogers reviews it) for half the price then it may be the answer for me.
TommyGNR Posted October 31, 2006 Posted October 31, 2006 Perhaps we need a new thread for the Sharp noisebox Last one from Tasman AV (MEL). Spero D. Posted October 31, 2006 Posted October 31, 2006 Perhaps we need a new thread for the Sharp noisebox That is one thing I love about the Ruby and Pearl, the whisper quiet of the projector.
HomerJ Posted October 31, 2006 Posted October 31, 2006 That is one thing I love about the Ruby and Pearl, the whisper quiet of the projector. Yes extremely quiet indeed! Calibration was going to cost $250. I'm going to phone the guy who did my 9000 using Colorfacts. But I've read SXRD isn't compatible with most light sensors. I'm not sure what Tasman do for $250, but I'd want gray scale D65 done asap. I haven't ceiling mounted the Pearl yet. A friend is coming over tomorrow night to help lift the 9000 out and Pearl in. Then I can get some serious play time in. So far only connnected to Pearl via S-Video since my component cables are running thru a wall to ceiling mounting. Need to get a couple of 6.5m HDMI cables. Anyone have recommendations. Also: Where's the best place on the net to pick up a US HD-DVD player? If something isn't confirmed soon I may have to go 1st gen. I'll report more on the Pearl once I'm set up.
TommyGNR Posted October 31, 2006 Posted October 31, 2006 Need to get a couple of 6.5m HDMI cables. Anyone have recommendations. Yep, don't fall for the digital is digital mantra. While it is, the signal needs to get from A to B in the first place, and many of the cheap cables will struggle sending 1080p. Read here for an example I'm running a 10m HDMI Kordz Krystal cable through the roof to where my VW50 will be mounted when my HT is complete. The Kordz cables are proven to work and are available from here. I know that somebody on here was able to negotiate a better than advertised price from there so I suggest you email first and say you are ordering 2 identical cables. Also: Where's the best place on the net to pick up a US HD-DVD player? If something isn't confirmed soon I may have to go 1st gen. I prefer Blu Ray so I would advise you to read through this thread and ask in there. I can't wait to see some pics and read a review.

Hmmm, news to me, but i rather potential colur degradation to confirmed RBE and screendoor Couldnt agree more TommyGNR ; the ruby has a xenon lamp that is known for its even colour distribution. What has the sharp got ? I certainly hope its better than a uhp lamp.As you say the fill factor is better with LCOS than DLP. No 24p playback is bad enough but for $13000 ; Ide want hdmi ver 1.3 capability - just to see what >24 bit colour looked like

Being a single chip DLP, we can look forward to rainbow effect, what fun!!

TommyGNR Posted November 1, 2006 Posted November 1, 2006 Trevor Lees called me today, he is getting the VW50 in tomorrow. I plan to check it out on Saturday and quite possibly buy one. It depends on when our HT will be finished, we have a meeting with the project manager at 6:30 tonight so I will know more soon. Thanks TommyGNR. I've contacted the cable guys you recommended No worries, I'm happy to be of some help to another member here. I've learnt a lot from members here, it's about time I gave something back.
Spero D. Posted November 1, 2006 Posted November 1, 2006 Just saw one at Sony Central Adelaide. Took my HD-DVD player and some HD-DVD's as well. Nice projector and better than the Ruby IMO. Will check out the Sharp and will compare as I think I may be used to the DLP pop in image after having had a DLP for a few years. Loved the quietness of the Sony projector and IRIS in Auto 1 was doing a good job. For the money it is quite a bargain.

TommyGNR Posted November 1, 2006 Posted November 1, 2006 I've had a change of plans. The HT cabinets will be installed in 2 weeks, which is much sooner than I expected so if Trevor offers me an attractive price for cash I will pick one up tomorrow.

Trevor should come through.

TommyGNR Posted November 4, 2006 Posted November 4, 2006 I just picked up the last VW50 from Trevor Lees, he has sold six in two days. Price wise he asked $6480 and was happy to take visa so I didn't even bother trying to negotiate a cheaper price as I was only ever going to ask him to match Soundcorp's price of $6499.
