So far I only have the 1 HD-DVD with DD+ Audio (FF:Tokyo Drift) and I've got to tell y'all, converted to Multi-Channel PCM and pumped into my 2600 via HDMI, the SQ is mindblowing compared even to a great DTS track on an SD-DVD. The detail far surpasses my original expectations, even the LFE is rich and detailed and the entire sound stage is simply outstanding!

That is great to hear (no pun intended :D ). My copy should be here on Monday along with a few more from Amazon-

1 Batman Begins [HD DVD] $19.95 1 $19.95

1 Charlie & the Chocolate Factory $19.95 1 $19.95

1 The Bone Collector $19.95 1 $19.95

1 Army of Darkness (HD DVD) $23.95 1 $23.95

1 Fast & Furious (HD DVD) $19.95 1 $19.95

1 The Fast & The Furious: Tokyo Drift $27.95 1 $27.95

1 Tim Burton's Corpse Bride $19.95 1 $19.95

1 Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory $19.95 1 $19.95

There are a lot of nice things coming up in November/December. My HD-DVD collection is growing. I am finding it hard to watch normal DVD's :P I also spoke to Castel about the Toshiba HD-XE1 and it should be here at the end of November so I will upgrade to that since there is no Region Coding for HD-DVD. I am also close to pulling the trigger on a Blu-Ray player from the US. Either the Samsung since it is nearing $500US on Ebay (Just waiting on the new firmware first) or the new Panasonic which will have future support for the advance Audio formats or wait a week for the new Sony. The fact that there will be Region coding on Blu-Ray doesn't bother me as 95% of my DVD's are R1 so I assume the same will happen with my Blu-Ray collection. Decisions, Decisions.

I wonder if HD DVD & Blu Ray will do the whole double dipping thing!

And most importantly if they have the transfer down pat yet?

I do recall when dvd's first came out, they (the movie studio's) didn't transfer the movie that well from film to dvd. Because as time went on they we're getting better and better at transfering from film to dvd.

Another question? Is, some HD DVD's only have DD plus or DD or DTS. So will they double dip and re-release the movies in True HD Dolby and HD DTS. As far as I know there's only a couple of movies in True HD Dolby.

I think that goes without saying, the studios are going to play the same old games they have always played.

As I'm getting a PS3 and have a HD LCD tv with HDMI.. I probably just get the BR-HD discs at first... lets hope there are some local BR releases when PS3 is eventually released...

as for this HD-DVD/ BR-HD turf war.. just another disaster...to confuse the public which may mean a longer lead in time for HD.....crazy

Have you spoken to Castel recently? Last email I had from them 2 weeks ago had release date of dec 6 and no word yet on region coding.

Personally I think some recent SD releases have been very sub par - coincidently those very same releases have been getting a talk up for HD release eg Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire.

Release poor quaility SD to make HD look even better, would not put it past them.

I think Castel saying we are getting the HD-Xe1 at the end of Nov is pushing it big time. The US and Uk are getting them end of dec at the earliest, so i dont se eus getting them this year, since SG are still producing hdmi 1.3 chips,

I doubt Australia is the No.1 country they want to get the HD-XE1 out first. Castel have been ppromising HD DVD players for some time now. i wouldnt believe a word they say.

 I think thats just wrong!

I guess thats why I will wait to get BR or HD dvd, I would rather have a receiver with HD DD & HD dts and the disc's to boot.

Thats the whole point of HD!!!! why settle for less with DD plus or DTS

I can't understand why they aren't releasing the disc's with HD dts or HD dolby.....

Sorry, getting a little worked up... the movies studio's!! I can't understand their logic

Your problem is that you are making the assumption that they use logic. :D

Youre half correct (or half wrong depending on what way you look at it!). There is no disc with DTS-HD but plenty trickling through with Dolby TrueHD.

or see this

"Digital Journal ― I’m not a fan of crazy rumours, but when Gizmodo starts reporting that Panasonic and Sony are planning to launch a hybrid HD-DVD/Blu-ray player next year, you can’t help but say holy crap under your breath.

An “anonymous source” says someone very high up at Panasonic has decided the company will be releasing a hybrid HD-DVD/Blu-ray player next year.

The no-name source says Panasonic is considering the hybrid to protect itself as the next-gen DVD wars are nowhere near being resolved, with no clear winner in sight. According to Gizmodo, Panasonic is apparently also afraid of betting on a losing horse (welcome to the club).

And as if it weren’t enough to hear that Panasonic could be going hybrid, Gizmodo also reports that Sony will be making a dual HD-DVD/Blu-ray player as well.

I don’t know about the credibility of Gizmodo’s source, but you have to at least wonder whether either of these companies has the guts to go hybrid. After all, Sony is the godfather of Blu-ray, and producing a hybrid seems like a bit of a sell-out.

But then again, Sony is having a long list of problems with Blu-ray diodes and manufacturing, so the company might be better off producing a hybrid. Toshiba doesn’t have any problems getting products to market, perhaps Sony could learn a thing or two."

I'm sure if you sent him or her the number of emails as the number of blu-ray posts you keep bombarding us with theyd' eventually cave ! surely !

atleast then we might have soem worthwile comment from you based on somethign substantial an actual player !

go on give it a go !

The benefits are certainly there, on paper. It remains to be seen if they can get the implementation right though.

Hmm that could be exciting news if it leads to apple developing Hybrid drives. I am sure they don't want to release there machines as a blu-ray OR HD-DVD, nor with twin drives.

On the other hand they may only lend minimum support to either with their efforts focused on their own download service and their home entertainment device for said service (the ipod of tv).

As with every other battle like this (beta vs vhs), there will eventually only be one winner with the loser being phased out completely.

Companies like Apple who walk a fine line already have to hedge their bets because they can't afford to back the loser.

Whoever gets the inital foothold will win.

Sony's high pricing is actually good marketting. By having high prices and also the better product on paper, they establish Blu-Ray as a premium product.

When their prices drop to HDDVD level (inevitible), they will be seen as a premium product at an affordable price which should attract interest.

If its Apple that does both bluray and HD at least we'll know its a top product and it will look 1st rate, as has been proven by their computers of the past few years, unlike those ugly Wintel boxes.
