Dr Mike Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 Just bought my TV and has 2 HDMI imputs My question to your AV experts Are HDMI cables less then 2 metres in length generally going to be the same quality whether I buy a monster one for $199 from radio rentals or a UGLY HDMI cable from ebay ( ugly the brand not the look )
Ted1503559509 Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 you can more or less try the range at DSE Powerhouse which are from thin to thick with there money back warranty.
dvduser Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 Jaycar, DSE, JB or if you want some really good stuff www.htcustomcables.com p.s. why is a question being posted in the Reviews section
Dr Mike Posted November 12, 2006 Author Posted November 12, 2006 Main it is in here as I don't see a section entited " Cables" also if people have these cables they could review them for me .... but your point is made I choose a little better in future
pgdownload Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 As long as you don't buy the absolute cheapest, HDMI cables under 5m are pretty much of a muchness. Monster cables are always a waste of money. Regards Peter Gillespie
JoshH Posted November 16, 2006 Posted November 16, 2006 Monster cables are always a waste of money. 'Monster' is just a brand of cable - nothing more. Blanket statements like the above are just not correct and do as much harm as good. As to being a waste of money - it may or may not be depending on your equipment and requirements. I have personally experienced no name brand HDMI cables that fall over after 6metres. Replaced with an audioQuest HDMI I ran it 15metres no problem. Was the AQ cable that cost 5 times as much a waste?.......
Wilco1503560275 Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 Monster cables are always a waste of money. their not if u like their cables.
spoco2 Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 QUOTE(pgdownload @ Nov 12 2006, 06:55 PM) * Monster cables are always a waste of money. their not if u like their cables. No, they are. You may like the 'idea' of their cables, but when they cost $200US for a 1m length of HDMI cable, you are getting seriously, seriously ripped off. You will see and hear NO difference to them and cables that cost far less. So, by definition, they are a waste of money.
Hydrology Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 Replaced with an audioQuest HDMI I ran it 15metres no problem. Was the AQ cable that cost 5 times as much a waste?....... Prob not a waste but there are other brands that are formally approved by the HDMi org that will work over the same distance, for a lot less than the AQ brand. Dr Mike - pick yourself up some Kordz Silver Diamond HDMI cables, nice cables and work over long distances if required, and importantly very well priced.
jimmmy Posted November 19, 2006 Posted November 19, 2006 Jaycar, DSE, JB or if you want some really good stuff www.htcustomcables.comp.s. why is a question being posted in the Reviews section hey M I was wondering which HT cables you have. I would be interested in some basic opinions of whatever cables of theirs you have..... cheers James

To clarify, I'm sure if you buy Moster cables you are getting pretty damn amazing cables. My reference to 'waste' was more to highlight the fact that you can spend much less on cables and get 99% of the end result. I'd never advocate buying the absolute lowest priced cables (or anything else for that matter) you can find. Expensive HDMI cables seem to be a better bet for lengths over 5m, however I'd still suggest that you can easily find other fine options priced much lower than Monster. Regards Peter Gillespie

Regards Peter Gillespie Monster cables ARE good. Just not good value for money. I use a 10m Kordz Silver HDMI. It's done a fine job for me. THe only issue is it is very thick and has a large bend radius so make sure you have space behind your player and pj to have th cable plugged in. HDMI connectors aren't well designed to take the strain from the weight some of these cables have.

Regards Peter Gillespie Also, remember we're talking about HDMI cables here... a DIGITAL cable... so the information being passed down them is 0s and 1s... there's no 'extra bit of punch' or 'fine detail' you're going to loose in cheaper cables. It's either going to work, or it's not. As long as the cable passes the data along it (which, granted, if you're talking long lengths, is probably going to need at least half decent cables) then you've got PERFECT reproduction... end of story, no 'tweaking' no 'slight difference' NOTHING... it's digital, and the reason I love to move to digital, it SHOULD remove all this cable hocus pocus. (although, obviously, people still fall for it)

The HDMI cable is still analogue but passing digital info. Kinda like a Coax cable for digital sound.

The HDMI cable is still analogue but passing digital info. Kinda like a Coax cable for digital sound. But they are both cases of the cable failing... not carrying the whole signal. Once you get to the point of the cable actually working as it's supposed to, that's it... it's working 100% and there's no more 'extra' information or 'wider soundstage' or anything that the extra x hundred dollars is going to buy you.
Cooksta59 Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 The problem I have with Monster cables is not wether they are top shelf audio components; but wether their price is justified for what you get.I nearly fell over backwards when I saw a 1 metre hdi to hdmi cable for the best part of $300 at a major retailer. Top quality; probably is; worth the money; thats up to the consumer to decide. Or more to the point can the retailer and manufacturer justify that sort of pricing? Steve

You'd have to be either nuts or a lottery winner. I paid a grand total of $21 AUD total for 2 HDMI cables from the USA, including delivery. After hooking them up to my plasma and DVD player I can't imagine how the picture could possibly be any clearer. I'd love to see a $300 Monster cable up against my $11 cable, as I'd be willing to bet a fair amount of money that there would be zero difference

Hansel Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 Care to point us at the website for those? Sounds like a bargain I'd like to partake of http://www.svideo.com/hdmicable.html Free worldwide shipping and if you use the code svideo you get a percentage discount (I got Gold Plated but they've gone up a dollar since I ordered. Not sure it makes any difference anyway )

I went with the non-gold plated as I'm a tight arse, and also because the site said they'll work just as well... but they don't look as nice as the gold ones you got.

Yep, I would have done the same if the gold had been more expensive when I bought mine, as it's pretty much just a gimmick anyway Just be aware that they're 3 feet, not 3 meters
