Curious Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 Hi CuriousWhilst the Denon is/was a beast in its day, and still a fine unit, I am very sure a variable output Droplet would be better in 2ch (and an E1 would also in video). Damn should have looked at the Droplet that JohnA was selling (Hang on...must excercise some restraint here, I'll end up buying a whole new system from scratch at this rate ) Aside: the Fixed and Variable on my Denon are both analogue out, so to use an external DAC I'd need to use the Digital out (which I understand down-rezs the signal, so no joy there). Looks like it's going to back to finding a suitable Power amp for the Divas for now, then upgrade transport (and add external DAC) for my next mid-life crisis Cheers, Curious
ausnew Posted June 9, 2007 Posted June 9, 2007 austrian as another alternative you can utilise your existing RCA and jsut buy a stinger/cadence little Y cable that you place at the amp to feed the 2ch's the same signal. this is $13? from jb hifi in their car audio section, cant fault it for build and provides an excellent result. Al, As per the PM I sent you re: subwoofer, would this just be as good an application for splitting LFE out to 2 RCA cables for subwoofers as well. PS sent you the photos as well.

chefscuba70 Posted June 10, 2007 Posted June 10, 2007 Yes thats right, Rick doesn't offer it as standard anymore. I got a custom 3 way crossover (tripple binding posts) for the Apogee and Meridian, and dual on Aphelions.I wont be getting another reference either, two is plenty enough! But I will be trying out an ME850 (special edition) in a shoot-out against the dual Elektra set up, will let you know how it goes. Ciao. Hi Mike R, It's been four days, have you been able to organise this shoot-out yet? Sorry, I don't mean to be a pushy bastard (though I can be like Gordon Ramsey at times), I'm just eager to hear what your thoughts are with the hi-cap 850, and compared to the Elektra. I'm worried I'll lose track of this thread and miss your results. I guess I'll need to have some patience for a change (but I don't know how long I can hold for ). Though I have not heard this new model yet, I would love to snap up a pair, but @ $6k a pop it won't be any time soon. Will be very interesting to go up against the Elektra. Looking forward to the bout. Chef.
Drizt Posted June 10, 2007 Posted June 10, 2007 "hired goon" did a bit of a shoot out recently and he preferred the older 550 over the Elektra. He also compared VAF I-93's to the Apogee's. Click here for the thread.

Mikey Z Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 I Biamped my VAF DCXs with my Denon 2807, I really noticed the difference... they sounded more.... effortless. I bought the 2807 thinking I would upgrade to proper HT in the future, as I only have the 2 fronts for now... but I've realised that I really like and prefer 2ch. Damn it, why didn't I buy a 2ch amp instead of the 2807? And this may sound like the dumbest question ever... but anyway. On the back there are speaker terminals front L+R A, and L+R B. whats the B for??
alcoop1503559994 Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 A & B Speakers. You probably have an A/B switch for connecting another pair of speakers and you switch between them.
roachy Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 I have a question about bi-amping. I've just ordered an Onkyo 875 in the group buy. Reading in the manual for bi amping it directs me to hook the front LR channels to my speakers tweeter terminal and the Surr Back LR channels to the speakers woofer terminal. What I was wondering was, does the amp therefore apply a form of an active crossover or would it send a full range signal to both, and what effect could it have on the passive crossover inside the speakers? The speakers I wish to hook it up to are Definitive Technology BP2000TL supertowers. An secondly does this give me in effect nearly double the power available to the speakers? Which I would imagine would be more benecial in two channel listening. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
alcoop1503559994 Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 Should still send full range signal to both binding posts on your speakers. Double the power? I doubt it, but might notice a little improvement.
quijibo Posted November 4, 2007 Posted November 4, 2007 ...Well today it was time to bi-amp my speakers. So is it worth it. Yes i believe it is. The dynamics are much better, better controlled bass and a more open and cleaner souding top end. ... I've got nothing better to do than dig up old threads. Well actually thats not true, I could go back downstairs and listen to more of my music collection, but I've already spent the better part of the weekend doing that. Yesterday morning I was considering buying new speakers. My old semi-DIY speakers were sounding dull and ordinary and I'd had enough of pulling them apart and fiddling with them, when I realised I had configured them for bi-wiring/bi-amping and that I had two spare channels on my 7.1 amp to play with. So I rolled out some speaker wire, removed the tabs that connect the binding posts on the speakers and hooked them up. The speakers are semi-DIY jobs and for interest sake they are 3-way floor-standers with an 8" bass driver conencted to one binding post with a 8" passive driver in the same chamber, and the other binding post is connected to an isolated 6.5" midrange driver and a 1" silk dome tweeter. All use 1st order crossovers at 400Hz/3kHz or thereabouts. I was expecting something to go wrong. But besides a loose connection on one speaker and having to re-do the setup on my amp it was easy. When I first tried to listen to the radio Snow Patrol was playing and I sat down to listen. My first thought was that I set the amp to run in one of the surround modes and I was sure something was wrong when it refused to switch to stereo. It then dawned on me that it was already in stereo... Crikey! It really did make a difference. The most noticeable thing was the soundstage. My setup is farily low-end and normally it just sounds like music coming from the speakers exact location, but now it filled the room and I kept having to check it was just the two front speakers that were producing this music. Like the original poster, the clearer top end and more controlled bass is really evident. It may be just more to do with the fact that the sound is different and I will probably adjust to it eventually and then become bored and want to upgrade again, but right now I feel as though I just got the upgrade I was after for free.
