Keith_W Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 Banana are clean - Check[/b] Who is responsible for cleaning the banana?
norpus Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 Just reminded me of another hi-fi accident and it was me this time  .I went to work for the same store that had eventually gotten rid of the speaker wrecker.Being a hi-end store we didn't have a lot of floor traffic and so the manager suggested I spend as much time as possible dragging equipment into the dem room and getting as much experience as possible with the likes of Audio Research , Krell , Musical Fidelity etc etc. I picked up a Krell KSA 50 MK2 buy it's front handles and just as I was about to turn to go to the dem room someone called my name and given the weight of the amp I turned my whole body to look in the direction of the caller. The amp hit the first speaker in a row of 4 and all four speakers tumbled off their stands to the ,fortunately, carpeted floor.Total value of speakers knocked over was about five thousand pounds at retail in the 80's.There was a stunned silence in the shop and I was imagining having to work for many years for next to no money , a real sphincter loosening moment  .Thank God for well built speakers , apart from a small scratch on a Gale 402 there was no damage, however new underpants were immediately required in a number of cases. All this on my first day. Gordon [/b] oops, great story tho Gordon Who is responsible for cleaning the banana?  [/b] You were braver than I Amfi
Tony M Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 Greg said the following in regards to caring for the wood veneer finish. "<span style="font-family:Arial"> Mr Sheen builds up a silicon layer, fine if you keep using it, but you can't apply other things over it. Marveer makes them look fantastic.</span>" I did a google for Marveer and Marteako and didn't find much.. (got to practise my google-foo i guess). Anyone know if these still exist, and where to get them from?</span> <span style="font-family:Arial"> [/b] I reckon the red Marveer is fantastic stuff A few months ago, I'd sanded down the tops of an old pair of Wharfedale speakers to get rid of deep scratches and then abandoned them in the shed. I suddenly needed them as a temporary replacement when my main speakers had an "unfortunate occurrence". To get them respectable enough to put in the lounge room, I raided Mrs M's stocks of furniture polish and found a bottle of this red Marveer stuff. It goes on like oil and smells kind of nice in an old-fashioned sort of way. Anyway, it made that raw veneer look better than new. I just had a look at them and they still look great! I won't bother using anything else on them. However, I can't see this stuff doing anything for timber with a polyurethane finish.....in much the same way as I doubt that all those fancy leather conditioners can penetrate the coating on most leathers used these days in car interiors. Might as well be plastic from the way it looks, smells and feels.
Drizt Posted January 7, 2007 Author Posted January 7, 2007 I reckon the red Marveer is fantastic stuff [/b] Can you ask the lovely lady where she gets it from?
Tony M Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Can you ask the lovely lady where she gets it from? [/b] Hmm....You'll go a long way.....time you got started! She reckons she gets it at the local supermarket (Woolworths). Made/marketed by Kiwi Australia. But the current bottle was probably bought a few years ago as a little bit goes a long way and she uses it mainly on antique rather than modern furniture. Hope it's still available and hasn't joined the many other excellent products that you just can't get anymore
Drizt Posted January 8, 2007 Author Posted January 8, 2007 Hope it's still available and hasn't joined the many other excellent products that you just can't get anymore [/b] Cheers. The only references I have found on the net seem to suggest that its no longer available.
Grumpy Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 I was going to suggest Marveer also, but I'm not sure it still sells. I use to, or I should say, my missus use to use it on all wood surfaces. Tony's right, it smells wonderfull, sort of homely? I do remember hearing something negative about it a few years ago concerning unsealed timbers though. The talk at the moment for some people, is a drop of good Olive Oil does a good job. ???
joz Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 It seems that Greg does use T bolts on his speakers... click here for image Cheers. [/b] Yes T screws are a great item, they give a metal to metal bite.So no chance of stripping the timber into which they are srewed. They pull tight from both sides of the timber to which they are inserted. They are used also regularily to fasten the legs/feet on lounge furniture,so the can take a bit a force.
damohpi Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 The only references I have found on the net seem to suggest that its no longer available. [/b] I picked up a bottle from Bi-Lo this afternoon, they had both types available, liquid and spray pack.

Tony M Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 Do you mean Marveer? Smells good hey? [/b] Careful grumps....don't inhale too much. If you want to see what that stuff can do, just look at your average antique dealer
Hippy Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 The only maintenance I ever do is dust with a damp cloth (woofer cones included), and check the cable for tightness. All my drivers are caulked in to the baffle as well as screwed - cant come loose - in fact god forbid I ever need to replace a driver, it would be hell to get them out. [/b] Erm...I noticed the other night that one of the Subs had developed a rattle. Yet to see if its just a loose screw where the amp is tho. I'm avoiding the issue and hoping its not the speaker rattling in the front.
