BlueDusk Posted April 5, 2009 Posted April 5, 2009 If I recall correctly, JJJ's RDS was operated by a third-party which was using it to carry other information as a trial (e.g. traffic data). When their trial concluded the RDS stopped. The only station with RDS AF (alternate frequency) support now is WSFM (88.3, 99.1 and 101.7 MHz). Back in 2005 the ABC told me they have no plans to roll out RDS and to just wait for digital radio instead.
BlueDusk Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 107.9MHz in Sydney now has RDS... though not intentionally, lol. Station name (scrolling): | RADIO | DATA | SYSTEM | CODER | -------- | DEMO | VERSION | Radio text: RADIO DATA SYSTEM CODER -------- DEMO VERSION PTY: Varied TA on
BlueDusk Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 Another station has turned on their RDS signal here in Sydney (Wollongong to be exact). 98.1MHz is now coming up as "i98FM". So now, the following 14 frequencies receivable in Sydney have RDS: 88.3—WSFM 95.3—Vega95.3 96.1—EDGE96.1 96.5—WAVE FM 96.9—Nova 969 98.1—i98FM 99.1—WSFM 101.7—WSFM 103.2—Hope1032 104.1—2DAY-FM 104.5—STAR1045 104.9—TRIPLE M 106.5—MIX106.5 107.9—(Easter Show Radio)
datvman Posted June 22, 2009 Author Posted June 22, 2009 G'day,Albury has RDS on both of their Commercial FM stations STAR1049 - For Star FM 104.9 RIVERFM - For The River 105.7 Bendigo doesn't have any though Nothing RDS wise for Albury anymore. Same with Sydney, alot of RDS has dissappeared with my new Falcon only registering RDS for 2MMM, Vega, Nova and 2DAY.
BlueDusk Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 (edited) Nothing RDS wise for Albury anymore. Same with Sydney, alot of RDS has dissappeared with my new Falcon only registering RDS for 2MMM, Vega, Nova and 2DAY. For Sydney, on the radio yesterday I got RDS on Mix, Triple M, Star, 2Day, Hope 103.2, Bankstown Community Radio, i98FM, Nova, Wave and Vega. WSFM's RDS is on and off. Haven't seen The Edge's RDS for a while. I usually get song name/artist data on RDS radiotext from Triple M, 2Day, Nova and Vega. Edited June 22, 2009 by Winston
HaggisBasher Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 Found a new one in Melbourne North West FM on 98.9 is transmitting RDS of "NRTHWEST" along with the 6 commercial stations.
lpy Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 Found a new one in MelbourneNorth West FM on 98.9 is transmitting RDS of "NRTHWEST" along with the 6 commercial stations. Hey you're right, first community station I've seen with that. And their genre is set as "Arts".
GoForMoe Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 Has anyone noticed an increase/decrease of RDS after DAB+ started? None of my receivers support it, but I'm interested if what you get over the scrolling text on DAB+ is being also sent to FM.
Rock in stereo Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 (edited) On analogue FM, FM 104 Triple M and B105 FM have finally started using track and artist information via RadioText. Very cool. On the "FM 104hundred" countdown on Saturday they were scrolling every track. B105 were using it a few days ago but didn't seem to be on Saturday. Regionally, Hot 91 Maroochydore have RDS (no Radiotext in use) and of course, Toowoomba/Ipswich stations C FM 100.7 and River 949 have been doing full RDS integration for a long time. BlueDusk Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 2GO on the NSW Central Coast have now also started RDS with the name coming up as "2GO FM". RDS-enabled frequencies currently receivable in Sydney: 107.7, 106.5, 104.9, 104.5, 104.1, 103.2, 101.7, 99.1, 98.1, 96.9, 96.5, 96.1, 95.3 and 88.3.
DigitalRadioNow Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 Has anyone noticed an increase/decrease of RDS after DAB+ started? None of my receivers support it, but I'm interested if what you get over the scrolling text on DAB+ is being also sent to FM. What I did notice is that nearly all of the DAB+ radios have FM with RDS, so there has been an increase by default.' Radio stations that have systems to handle both the digital and FM data have been making more use of RDS, Austereo and DMG doing the most.
BlueDusk Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 Sea FM on the NSW Central Coast has joined its sister station 2GO and now also started RDS with the station name coming up as "Sea FM" and programme type as "Pop Music". Vega 95.3 have also changed its RDS station name to just "CLASROCK". Wave FM 96.5 changes its program type to "News" when there is news on RDS-enabled frequencies currently receivable in Sydney: 107.7, 106.5, 104.9, 104.5, 104.1, 103.2, 101.7, 101.3, 99.1, 98.1, 96.9, 96.5, 96.1, 95.3 and 88.3—15 frequencies in all.
Rock in stereo Posted June 20, 2010 Posted June 20, 2010 (edited) Radio Metro (Southport, Gold Coast) have RDS encoding now with their FM 105.7 broadcast. "105 7 FM". Scrolling Radiotext with station positioning statement (as opposed to scrolling track info). If I recall correctly, this means the country narrowcast service on 101.3 FM in Tweed Heads and Radio Metro are the only stations providing RDS on the Goldy. Edited June 20, 2010 by Rock in stereo
DigitalRadioNow Posted June 20, 2010 Posted June 20, 2010 Radio Metro (Southport, Gold Coast) have RDS encoding now with their FM 105.7 broadcast. "105 7 FM". Scrolling Radiotext with station positioning statement (as opposed to scrolling track info). If I recall correctly, this means the country narrowcast service on 101.3 FM in Tweed Heads and Radio Metro are the only stations providing RDS on the Goldy. I have been remiss in posting about this, Radio Metro have been using RDS for as long as I've had a digital radio (May 09). Most digital radios have FM with full RDS features for FM. Radio Metro also have the RDS time function activated and this is very helpful as when listening to the radio, it doubles as a clock. Unsure if 101.3, Tweed community radio continue with RDS, there was a change in board of the station, new tech guys came in and I haven't seen it with RDS for a long time. Is it back on now? How refreshing if so.
Rock in stereo Posted July 5, 2010 Posted July 5, 2010 (edited) Rebel FM 90.5, when signal strength is optimal (in this case, the Brisbane CBD) is now scrolling "Rebel" and "99.4 FM". Edited July 5, 2010 by Rock in stereo
DigitalRadioNow Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 Rebel FM 90.5, when signal strength is optimal (in this case, the Brisbane CBD) is now scrolling "Rebel" and "99.4 FM". Whilst it looks nice, for someone who is so hell bent on coverage outside his licence area, this is a puzzling decision as RDS does decrease receiving quality. To display RDS on screen of my Sangean DPR-69+, if River 949 is in a marginal area, it will drop the signal. Same with in car listening, turn RDS off or at least get it off screen and the signal improves. Even with an uptake of digital radios (however small the numbers are), more people will not tune over to Rebel simply because they're running RDS. In fact, when listening to radio with a digital radio, I only listen to digital stations, the FM band never gets a look-in, save for listening to River 949 at 6pm if I'm away from the TV eg. in bathroom to listen to the 9 News simulcast.
BlueDusk Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 Triple J in Sydney now has RDS. I tuned into the Newcastle and Illawarra transmitters also but they weren't transmitting it. As for the question previously posted, my dad's Peugeot 308 has both RDS and RT; however, the RT needs to be enabled and is disabled by default.
DigitalRadioNow Posted August 19, 2010 Posted August 19, 2010 River - Shows as 'River949' and scrolls between 'The HIT Music Station' and the song name. Drove through Clem7 tunnel last Fri, 8pm, ran a scan of FM band, all Brisbane RA1 services are retransmitted, as well as static with indecipherable program on 94.9. Drove through again on Sat, just after lunch, nothing on 94.9
Rock in stereo Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 100.7 Sea FM (or CFM, whatever!) in Toowoomba have switched OFF their RDS as has Hot 91 in Maroochydore.
DigitalRadioNow Posted August 26, 2010 Posted August 26, 2010 100.7 Sea FM (or CFM, whatever!) in Toowoomba have switched OFF their RDS as has Hot 91 in Maroochydore. No loss for Hot 91, it never displayed on one RDS radio of mine despite all other east coast RDS enabled stations working fine. They never had rolling text or time enabled, simply station name and format. As for CFM, ask Andrew Chapman at SCMG Gold Coast, he'll be busy but CFM is a past baby of his.
BlueDusk Posted October 4, 2010 Posted October 4, 2010 ABC Classic FM now has RDS in Sydney with radio text as well; same with Triple J. Triple J's program type came up as "Culture" =P. Station name for Classic FM is "Classic" and "triple j" for Triple J.
mgaleano Posted August 7, 2011 Posted August 7, 2011 Wondering why Rebel FM on the gold coast on an even freq. ie 99.4 FM , rather than 99.3 or 99.5 etc Sydney for what ever reason has a station on 103.2 FM. Other than that its pretty rare in Australia other than 88.0 FM which I think is used a lot for Tourist radio and narrowcasting radio stations.
dkint3 Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 Wondering why Rebel FM on the gold coast on an even freq. ie 99.4 FM , rather than 99.3 or 99.5 etcSydney for what ever reason has a station on 103.2 FM. Other than that its pretty rare in Australia other than 88.0 FM which I think is used a lot for Tourist radio and narrowcasting radio stations. I think Rebel 99.4 is due to 99.3 JJJ from Wide Bay and 99.5 Radio National Coffs Harbour (which can overspill into the Gold Coast during mild/strong tropo). There isn't much room left on the Gold Coast. Similarly for 100.6 the Breeze - you have 100.9 ZZZ Lismore, 100.7 CFM Toowoomba and nearby 100.3 Redland Bay (Brisbane southside) community radio to contend with. The 100.5 Zinc 96 repeater from Noosa also overspills into the Gold Coast during mild/strong tropo. And I think 103.2 Sydney is to protect 103.3 2GCR Goulburn. Though in hindsight they could have planned this one better And there's a few oddities like this in Melbourne community radio - 88.6 3PVR in Plenty Valley and 97.4 3WRB in the inner Western Suburbs. 97.4 is a particularly curious assignment - 97.1 and 97.7 are the nearest frequencies in use and both well over the other side of Melbourne. 97.5 was assigned to Ballarat (but never switched on) - it would have been a good choice for News Radio.... Why not 97.3 for WRB??
Digital Penetration Posted September 12, 2011 Posted September 12, 2011 The narrowcaster RAW FM (87.6 MHz in Canberra) uses RDS to show the track name. I've just discovered this while playing around with my DAB+/FM radio - they've probably been doing it for ages!
