Volunteer Kazz Posted January 31, 2008 Volunteer Posted January 31, 2008 its a Tom Hanks and Ron Howard thingy....... Yeah I'm not a big Tom Hanks fan either but this film is really quite good.
SDL Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 I don't know what everyone has against Apollo 13 it's a great movie. Exactly, Engineers saving the world
STiScott Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 Yeah I'm not a big Tom Hanks fan either but this film is really quite good. Unlike Kazz, i think Tom Hanks is a good actor (Kazz is after the MAN himself correct or is Daniel Craig the preference ). Anyway the actual movie is good IMHO. On the subject of the actual players in my case the HD-XE1 (loving it so far, it just smacks the 360 ADD-On). I have it connected using the Analog outs and set to PCM, so the player will decode the HD sound formats for me. What i would like to know is there any way to tell if it is playing back DD TrueHD or just the Core DD. I'm playing Superman Returns ATM and it has DD TrueHD. Playing the DD+ soundtrack it appears there is more volume in it. Then i change over to DD TrueHD and it drops a few "db" (why is that). Any ideas would be great. Cheers
STiScott Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 Whoops miss read Kazz's comments saying she is not a big Tom Hanks fan, my bad Kazz sry .

There are plenty of actors out there who I believe are brilliant actors, but I don't find attractive, but there are a few who I do find attractive, Daniel Craig is one of them.

Volunteer Kazz Posted January 31, 2008 Volunteer Posted January 31, 2008 even in Power of One? I haven't seen that one.
tonyjg Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 Exactly, Engineers saving the world Bourne Vs Engineers and Hanks...... think i'll try for the former.
SDL Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 I haven't seen that one. He was Sgt. Jaap Botha in The Power of One - you haven't seen the movie?
Volunteer Kazz Posted January 31, 2008 Volunteer Posted January 31, 2008 He was Sgt. Jaap Botha in The Power of One - you haven't seen the movie? No, might have to take a look. Not a nice character I'm gathering.

Sry abot that Kazz, i did retract the statement straight away as i misread it. I've just seen a few people (more senior members) having a joke with you about various actors and in particular Danil Craig. My apologies. Have you tried hitting the display button on the XE1 remote while the movie is playing, it will tell you the details of what is being sent to your AVR. Thanks for that SDL, i didnt even realise that option (mind you havnt read the manual), so thanks again for that. Cheers
SDL Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 No, might have to take a look. Not a nice character I'm gathering. He is evil and looks the part of the bigot Boer he is playing. No need to apologise, there was no offense taken, we do tend to crap on about my DC obsession, which by the way also extends to Hugh Jackman . Actually you'll find a few guys around here with an obsession for Kate Beckinsale as well. It's all good fun. Cheers, Karen.

Jessica Alba, Scarlett Johansson, or if going more my age Halle Berry - Beckinsale? These guys have no taste

Volunteer Kazz Posted January 31, 2008 Volunteer Posted January 31, 2008 Power of One, excellent and brilliant movie, delivers it's message very well Don't suppose you have it?
Autocrat Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 Power of One, excellent and brilliant movie, delivers it's message very well Ah yes, the movie that was based on the title of the book by Bryce Courtenay.
SDL Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 Ah yes, the movie that was based on the title of the book by Bryce Courtenay. Yes the book and the movie are streets apart, but they both are good in their own way.

Hugh Jackman is a good choice though, as i have to put up with my missus going about him and Matthew Mc'. Kate Beckinsale "NOT" my cup of tea. More along the lines of what SDL mentions below. The Power of One is an intriguing story of a young English boy named Peekay and his passion for changing the world.
andym Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 (edited) Don't suppose you have it? Ive got it, but the PQ on it is very poor. Now I have the XE1 I might give it another spin and see if it can polish this t*rd. Not holding my breath though. Pity, because I like the movie. Edited January 31, 2008 by andym
Dolphy Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 (edited) Quick questions guys: If you've recently purchase the XE1 (or any other HD DVD model) are you not a little concerned by the lack of upcoming titles and studio support? I am aware that the XE1 is a great upscaler of SD DVD. Just a little curious....that's all. I'm still undecided as to whether or not I should buy one (if I could find one). I really don't need another upscaling DVD player, my Marantz DV6600 does a great job. Edited January 31, 2008 by Dolphy

I really don't need another upscaling DVD player, my Marantz DV6600 does a great job. ill admit i am a little worried, however the fact that prior to the warner anouncement i was planning on buying one, and back then they were over $1000, the price now being $530 has pushed me over the edge to grab one now, despite the current situation... there have still been a decent number of HD-DVD releases already that i will enjoy, there are _some_ good ones coming in the future/near future, and since i dont have an upscaling DVD player yet, that is another factor for me. And there is always hope that some miracle might occur, and some studios start supporting HD-DVD again if enough players/discs are sold this year. There is also the hope of more anouncements from paramount and universal etc... ideally one would want to wait and see whether HD-DVD ramps up, or whether this is a "firesale" and basically winding down... but by the time we know that, the opportunity for a $530 XE1 will be gone... Ill also be picking up a Sammy BD-P1400 so ill be covered for any eventuality anyway, have only spent about $1100 which is what an XE1 would have cost a month ago anyway, and both my players will support bitstreaming HBR audio to my 705 Edited January 31, 2008 by scarecrow420
