Swung by Clive Peeters in Loganholme on the way home from work this afternoon (the long way ;) ). They had 4 XE1's boxed up with $579 as the ticket price. Didn't speak to any sales people to find out their best price because otherwise I'd be too tempted to get one

Ill be doing the exact same thing, are you importing your BD-1400?

wasnt planning on importing one no. I assume you would for Region A rather than Region B? Despite the fact that i oppose region coding, currently alot of BDs dont seem to implement region coding anyway (although i guess in the future they might), and i would prefer to have a local model for warranty etc and not needing a stepdown transformer... unless it was HUGELY cheaper to import one, but consdiering the local price for a 1400 is $550 - $600 it doesnt seem worth it.

If you consider 65% a lot ... or looking at it the other way if you consider the 35% that do "not many"

Quick questions guys:

If you've recently purchase the XE1 (or any other HD DVD model) are you not a little concerned by the lack of upcoming titles and studio support?

I am aware that the XE1 is a great upscaler of SD DVD.

Just a little curious....that's all.

I'm still undecided as to whether or not I should buy one (if I could find one). I really don't need another upscaling DVD player, my Marantz DV6600 does a great job.

I don't really think it's fair to ask people to talk you into (or out of) making a purchase like this. Truth is the situation is no different today than it was last month - buying either HDM format is a risk. Neither is assured of a long term future and one, both or neither could disappear in the next 12 months to 2 years. The choice is entirely up to you, your wallet and your needs.

65% is a decent whack, and for those that do well i guess you just have to wait for the local release. Always having to buy discs (and wait for them) from overseas would be a bit of a pain, although i guess even buying local region discs overseas is better for the hip pocket.

This is one of many reasons why I (and I guess most people frequenting this area of DTV) have always supported/preferred HD-DVD but obviously that doesnt help when you want to watch movies from a BD only studio does it!

I dont know... now you've got me wondering whether i should get region A for BD

... and that's the rub! For all the BS about region coding not affecting "normal" people it's still a pain in the arse at every turn. Want to rent? Need a local player. Want a decent range? Buy an OS machine. Want to impulse buy. Local. Want to buy a reasonable price? Import. Want to borrow and lend with friends? Local or import ....

I started with a region B machine and was happy with that until the region coded list began growing and the local selection remained stagnant. I hate having to buy three or four discs at a time when I'm importing them but there's just so much more to choose from and they're all available.

No easy answer.

It's the eternal question ... aint Region Coding a **** ? :(

indeed. If the price was way cheaper i would be more tempted, but I just looked on Amazon and the BD-P1400 is $330USD which is about $370AUD then by the time you ship it over here that will be say $100 then a stepdown transformer another $100. i can get a local one for $570 so it works out completely even, only with no warranty and the hassle of a stepdown tranny.

It's the eternal question ... aint Region Coding a **** ? :(

everytime i think of it, it pisses me off that the superior format in pretty much every meaningful way at least, has been ditched. And apparently "the consumer decided" what a load of rot... backroom dealings and studio greed decided. Although obviously im preaching to the converted in here!

ill admit i am a little worried, however the fact that prior to the warner anouncement i was planning on buying one, and back then they were over $1000, the price now being $530 has pushed me over the edge to grab one now, despite the current situation... there have still been a decent number of HD-DVD releases already that i will enjoy, there are _some_ good ones coming in the future/near future, and since i dont have an upscaling DVD player yet, that is another factor for me. And there is always hope that some miracle might occur, and some studios start supporting HD-DVD again if enough players/discs are sold this year. There is also the hope of more anouncements from paramount and universal etc... ideally one would want to wait and see whether HD-DVD ramps up, or whether this is a "firesale" and basically winding down... but by the time we know that, the opportunity for a $530 XE1 will be gone...

Ill also be picking up a Sammy BD-P1400 so ill be covered for any eventuality anyway, have only spent about $1100 which is what an XE1 would have cost a month ago anyway, and both my players will support bitstreaming HBR audio to my 705 :)

Is there a reason you have the Onkyo 705 rather than the 605? I'm contemplating a purchase and feel secure with the specs of the 605. Differences?

Some of the advantages of the 705 are 3 HDMI inputs rather than 2, plus an extra optical and coax input, an optical output, full set of pre-amp outputs (for external amps etc), a Phono input (big whoop!), 7 band over 5 band equaliser, more crossover settings, Audyssey MultiEQ equaliser (8 microphone positions) rather than only 2 on Audyssey 2EQ on 605, slightly more power (only 10w), THX Select certification (605 has no THX cert), 3 DSP chips vs 1 meaning more listening modes and the ability to matrix 5.1 sources into 7.1 (ie create surround back channels) - 605 cant do this and is a big deal if you plan on having a 7.1 setup as alot of material even on BluRay/HD-DVD is only 5.1 channel, and on the 605 your surr back speakers wont get any output. It also has stuff like an RS232 port for home automation, an IR port input for wired remote repeater systems, and a 12V trigger and proper binding posts for zone2 speakers. It also gets the fully programmable and backlit remote (605 remote is a POS comparatively, though i use a Harmony these days anyway), and of course we mustn't forget the blue light around the volume dial :P

To me it's worth the extra money (can pick them up for $1250 - $1300) however the 605 does do much of what the 705 can including all the same video processing and HDMI switching etc, and decoding the latest audio codecs (except foor matrixing 5.1 to 7.1 as mentioned above), and if you are on a budget and can live without the extra inputs/outputs and flexibility of the 705, and will only be running 5.1 system it is still a decent option

Sorry to keep taking this thread off topic, first it was BluRay players, now receivers!

ahem... so how about those crazy low prices on XE1s at the moment eh? :P

I picked up my XE1 on the first day of the new pricing so no extra discounting sought or offered, just stoked about the drop. Besides I used a whole bunch of CC rewards points on gift cards at HN so no cash or savings used either.

But I do love to bargain and just for fun I called into CP Macgregor tonight to see what they would do. First quoted $579 as above. Showed some interest and said I was aware of prices down to $530 on the forum and without any extra push salesman said he'd match that price but would have to get machine over from Loganholme or I could go there to pick up one. Wasn't sure if they would match the $530 though. I expect so.

Just the same I am happy as with my XE1.

Not at all, upcoming releases (this is the US only, more locally & in Europe) ;)

Hi guys this my first time on this forum,

I purchased a new Ep10 player a few days ago but do have a xbox360 Hd Dvd player, with regards to the comment about how many titles are available for HD Dvd i was quite shocked to see how many movies are on the market in Europe,

searching on ebay the HD movies for sale matched the blu ray titles.

Is the market in Europe different from here or the US? i might be abit more of a hassel getting movies from overseas but at least you get a great selection.

You know some of my PC software doesn't work on my new PC and they last only 3 or 4 years, the HD DVD player I expect to be working in 10 years if anything like my DVD players, so even worst case scenario I will get ten years out of any movies I buy to watch.

i rather quality titles over quantity titles ..... between Fox and Warner there will be plenty of shelf fodder (not to mention some of the gutter scraps produced by Columbia Tri-Star) .... Steven Segal will have his own BD shelf :)

Domayne at Penrith have 1 (one) XE1 in stock. They refused to even talk about letting me have it for less than RRP, someone else may have better luck. Mind you, the "best price" they gave me the other week on a Beyonwiz DP-P1 was $300 off the pace, so I'm not sure what they think they're doing.

Got an email from Toshiba redemptions today saying that my claim was accepted (thought I was dealing with an insurance company for a sec). The gist of it was don't expect them anytime soon you have to wait till the promotion is over then within 45 days and then if they have stock you'll get your discs. Who cares as long as they get here eventually.

Cheers

OK, got my XE1, but Toshibs web site wont validate my serial number for my free 10 HD DVD's, any tricks or hints??

you have to ring them and talk to someone in redemptions to get them to activate it. Once you have done that you can do the forms online
