Rappo Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 Hi all. Thinking of buying a PS3, but not sure which way to go. I know Sony brought out the 40GB model to compete with other game consoles on price and that they dropped a few features (besides going back to 40GB), but can anyone tell me what other differences there are. I have heard that there is less USB ports, and they dropped the multi-card reader. Yes? Other features gone as well?

I noticed on a friends redemption ps3 40gig, that there was no grill/air vent at the front. unlike the 60gig version. not really a feature, but seeing how these units could get pretty warm, i would prefer as much air ventilation as possible ....
Axe man Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 Try and avoid buyers regret and think about Region A bluray if your thinking of it for that as well. Just sold my Aus PS3 40gb for US 60gb at roughly the same price I got for 40gb Aus player.
ledge Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 Yes, definately consider a region A, PS3 .... Infact if i am buying any bluray player, it will be an import .....
Ghostface Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 (edited) But then if you import you lose the PS3s DVD upscaling abilities. Which is quite good for PAL DVDs contrary to the secrets benchmarks report which focus' mainly on the NTSC format. EDIT: The 40gb model does have BC for PS1 but not PS2. Rappo Posted March 5, 2008 Author Posted March 5, 2008 ok. Thanks everyone. I am actually looking at buyin it in Malaysia, where it is the same region as US. The 40GB is about $400. Limited stock of 80GB for about $600. 250GB is about $700-$750.

Different manufacturer of processor????????? The cell is made by IBM and always has been. The 40gb uses the 65nm cell which runs cooler and more effeciently, hence the fewer vents. The 60gb uses the 90nm cell which runs very hot and needs more vents due to the temp. The 60gb gets very hot to the touch, where as the 40gb barely breaks a sweat. There was word going round that a few 40gb filtered through with the old 90nm cell which would explain the 'Fan Noise' prolems experienced with a few people on these boards.

rhyno79 Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 I dont understand why some of you are so keen to get an import for region A bluray, doesn't this mean you cant rent from the video shop? Maybe you watch your movies more than once or twice, and buying works out cheaper than renting? I know i rarely watch movies more than a few times and would rather rent it.

scotty79 Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 the region coding of movies is the exact reason i past up the 80gb version from singapore... i love my games and thats the main focus of the PS3 for me, but a very close second was to utilise it as a bluray player (until the whole thing settles down and other BR players become affordable etc etc).
