Onkyo Japan has officially announced the launch of the TX-SA606 receiver, the replacement for the 2007 Award-winning TX-SR605.

The details extensively leaked across various websites are confirmed as being correct, in that the new model adds some features to the old one's specification.

And at least one online retailer is already taking pre-orders for the unit at £400 - the same price as the TX-SR605.

Notable on the Japanese website is the announcement that the new model's HDMI CEC system is now compatible with Panasonic's Viera Link, Toshiba's Regza Link and Sharp's Aquos Link, allowing the receiver to give one-button control of suitable TVs from those brands.

In addition, the TX-SA606 has:

* 4 HDMI inputs

* Audyssey Dynamics EQ

* 10W more power all round

* New remote

* An extra component video input

* It seems that the unit also has a video scaler, capable of 720p/1080i output.

Audyssey Dynamics EQ works in conjunction with the Audyssey 2EQ system to adjust the balance of the sound to compensate for changing volume levels, giving a more consistent sound when listening at low volumes.

So what does everyone think of this?

So what does everyone think of this?

I'm thinking about purchasing one shortly, but...

"175 W/Ch Minimum into 6 Ohms"

Are Onkyo in the habit of overrating power output? Anyone aware of realistic levels?

Interesting that the 705 doesn't have upscaling, but has upconversion.

The 606 has upconversion, but not upscaling!

I've also noticed that the power ratings on these units are very high, especially if you compare the equiv. models to Harmon Kandon, for example.

Makes it very difficult to determine what AVR you need to power your speakers!

Power ratings are all over the place from manufacturer to manufacturer. I wonder however, if they are consistent within manufacturer. What i mean is, i wonder if the extra 10w per channel over the 605 is a genuine increase, or just an "adjustment" as to how they measure it.

I saw the 175 w/ch but then saw that's with 1 channel driven. Great! But what if you have all channels driven and 8 ohm speakers??

Prepare to be confused.

But hey best just look at the power consumption to help cut through the bull. 550 W a nice simple figure.

Does the 606 offer anything over the 705 other than the additional HDMI input. The 705 still offers more in the way of THX, Audessey Multi etc. ??

Hmmm,

Me thinks this will sell much closer to RRP than the 605... I can't think of anything even near that price point that would have 4 x HDMI inputs!

Posted
I think that RRP when it hits OZ will be around the price of the 705 currently. Which will make the true street price around the RRP of the 605 now.

Any particular reason? In other markets it seems to be coming in at the same RRP as the 605.

Due to the extra HDMI inputs, the extra power and they would probably try avoid people getting them $300 off rrp for at least the first 6-8 months.

Certainly I expect the street price to be higher initially (just demand, fleecing the impatient ;-)). But in both the UK and USA the 606 is showing up at the same RRP as the 605. (400USD/400GBP)

(waiting for his friend to come pick him so he can go buy that onkyo 875 ;))

Is there an ETA?

Guy at Domayne Carringbah today told me 15th of May the Onkyo 606's are due in.

Onkyo 605 is officially discontinued now and are 'running out' (price wise).

JB Hifi Miranda also said that the 605 has been marked as 'deleted' in their system, though they still had it ticketed at $994.

JB Hifi Warringah Mall had them ticketed with a 'Reduced to clear' ticket price of $847 im pretty sure. May have been $867, but was definitely $8xx.

Perhaps we can get the 605's below the magical $681 now? The guy at Warringah Mall was very very helpful and knowledgable, however wouldnt give us a price until we were "ready to buy on the day"...

Hope this helps some people. :)

Looking to get an AV receiver in the next couple of weeks...

Was all set to get the Tx-sr605 but now the 606 has come along I'm wondering if its worth waiting? As far as I can tell the only major advantage is the 4 HDMI ports vs the 2 on the 605. Currently I only own one device that uses HDMI (HTPC) so its not really a big deal. So is there any other features that are worth holding out for? Or should I just get the 605 at what will hopefully be a cheaper price now its discontinued.

And the 606 does upscaling to 1080i *I THINK* (not 1080p), and a few other touch ups...

Its also now up on the Onkyo website so you can compare it now too. :)

Well some stores still have them ticketed at $994 (mainly JB). One JB i visited had them "Reduced to clear" for $84x, while another store said that they had been deleted from the system. Most Harvey Normans seem to know nothing about the new model, because they still stand by their $1299 ticket price and wont budge below about a grand, or $900 if you are lucky.

If you can, i reckon then best price you will get is a price match to $680 with the use of the receipts posted in the Onkyo 605 Owners Thread. Which according to most stores is "$100 below cost". I think this is true though as one one guy at our local JB HiFi showed me in his book their cost pricing of $757, and i saw it on the screen at another Harvery Norman store at ~$760ish.

As i posted previously, new release date is 'apparently' the 15th of May according to one Domayne store.

Hope that helps.

my mate at JB's confirms their cost is $780 for the 605.. although im sure there is some kind of rebate deal they get from onkyo on runout stock, hence they can drop to under cost
