It should, it has HDMI 1.3.

Not sure the HDMI 1.3 dictates that it should do 24hz..

Yamaha 663 specifically mentions 24Hz/1080p playback, unlike the Onkyo.

So i thought i might make sure before committing to one or the other..

I finally went and bought a 606. It runs into a Pioneer 507 Plasma.

Should I use the upconvert to 1080i or leave at 720p to best fit with the Pioneers funky display ratio? Will upconverting to 1080i really make a visable difference over 720p? I am usually watching foxtel via componant input.

What about DVD's in 576p native format? Should i leave as is or upconvert?

Any advice would be great

Cheers

You should try the different settings and use what ever you think looks best. There probably wont be much diference between 720p and 1080i if any. You might see an improvement if you up convert your DVD's.

If you have a Foxtel iQ2 then must of the HD channels will be 1080i, Nat Geo, Discovery and BBC. ESPN is 720p, not sure about Fox Sports.

Well I believe the video through HDMI is left untouched. So anything that you can pass through HDMI 1.3 should be fine.

anyone tried this puppy with 4 ohm speakers? Since it already runs hot (apparently) I am interested to know what the increased load does to it. Anyone have some info? Cheers.

make it hotter!

specs suggest it's ok to run 4 ohm speakers

Got me a 606 the other day. I am running it with 4 ohm speakers (Richter Wizards). So far it's been stone cold but I've yet to crank it up with any movies and it is winter.

I paid $1009, JB said there was no way they could do it for $900.

Hi All,

I'm thinking of getting a 606 or a Yamy 663. I have an old Yamy at present but are concerned about the Onkyo's over heating problems.

Are they really that common?

I will be running 6 ohm speakers (5.1).

Cheers

Hi. In the same boat as me eh :D Well I have been waiting through around 100s of pages of threads and come to these conclusions.

1. The 606 does not have as bad heating troubles as the 605, but it still gets pretty hot in isolated situations. I really think it may depend on your speaker application etc, biamping etc. Defaintly hotter than yamaha.

2. The 606 passes an unmolested 1080i/p hdmi signal, but appears to add its own sharpening etc to analogue signals even when "pass through" is turned on, not upscaling - this can be ammended however apparantly with a "secret menu".

3. Generally reviewers think the Onkyo is a better buy for the money, but state its not as "musical" as other recievers - I don't know what substance there is behind those claims, but it definatly gives the edge to Yamaha in the music department.

4. Yamaha clips btb/wtw, and cannot matrix 5.1 to 7.1 when it does its own trueHD decording - not an issue if you're going to use a ps3 for BD though. Also may suggest media pc problems if you're wanting to use the yamaha - though people do use them still.

5. Onkyo sometimes has a speaker buzz problem, and clicking when switching between inputs - seems rather isolated and could be configuration issues however/devices not liking each other.

5. Overall people have been happy with both a/v's. But perhaps more so with the Yamaha due to less configuration problem, overall experience and less failure rate compared to the 606 - but please take that as an opinion, not fact!!

Review of them both there - http://www.ultimateavmag.com/avreceivers/ However, that reviewer really likes the Onkyo over the yamaha.

What will I go? If I can get to the bottom of the "less musical" argument as being false, and the MP3 enhancer technologies appear similar on both amps, then probably the 606. Keep in mind, the 606 is more expensive than the 663 also.

Edit: Anybody got more info on the buzz issue with the amp and dynamic eq?

Quite urgently, does anyone know if this receiver will only output the OSD through HDMI? I can't get it working on component or composite, and it is REALLY bugging me. =(

Im still thinking about getting this amp - im just not sure how it will compare to my current HK amp..

anyone gone from a sort of 'higher up in the range but slightly older' AVR like my HK to a newer mid range AVR like the 606 ?????????

I love the outright grunt'n'punch from my HK so would hate to be taking a step backwards with the 606 - i really have zero idea how they compare!

I run powered studio monitors as my speakers - 2.0 old school stereo...

Doe anyone know if this receiver is able to take the digital audio from any HDMI input (stb, hddvd player, popcorn hour, xbox) and output a simple line level stereo signal. I.E. decode TrueHD, DTSHD/MA, DTS, DD, etc from a digital bitstream/pcm over HDMI and output a simple muxed stereo signal.

I know it has a powered zone 2 (not usable by me as speakers are powered with their own internal amps) as well as line out for zone 2. I also see that it has a 'vcr' stereo output...

I know higher models have pre outs which would be ideal - but you have to go 2 models up (SR875) to get 4 HDMI inputs (I need 4)!

I would like to use one of these stereo line level outputs to drive my power studio monitors as the primary sound output from this amp. video will run over HDMI to a projector.

As always any and all assistance/input is greatly appreciated!

Regards,

Tristan

hi Tristan,

The 606 has stereo outputs for both Tape and VCR, but sadly, the manual states that the 606 does not convert between digital & analogue formats. (And therefore, both Tape & VCR outputs remain locked in their analogue stereo format and can't be sourced from anything other than this format).

While I don't have the manual in front of me, but I believe that there may be other limitations associated with using zone 2, so there is a possibility that the 606 may not do what you require in your particular circumstance.

A model with line-outs would be ideal -perhaps you could consider the soon to be released 706 ??

Cheers

If you like the HK, i would not bother with any Onkyo. I personally think while the Onkyo are ok for HT, i think they are horrible for music.

I use my HK about 95% for HT at least, used to be the other way round but now its in my dedicated theatre room and i have an old sony for 2ch duties..

The main reason i want to change AVR's is for convenience (HDMI) and also the new audio formats.. if the HK did those i would never get rid of it, it has so much punch !!!!

Have a look at the new 255 & 355 from HK, the 655 & 755 are coming later in the year (around spring).
