Steeley Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Cancelled my Optus service today. They did offer me a $20 credit to stay, but otherwise seemed none to fussed that I was cancelling. I got the same deal. $20 off for three months. I wasn't interested and he didn't seem to care to keep my business. Now I have IQ2 with Foxtel and it's the greatest thing since sliced bread!
sohai Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 Lol the poor bloke in retentions is not gonna sit there all day with you trying to keep you as a customer when Optus only makes an average of $5 per DTV customer per month, offering you $20 a month x3 is already what Optus makes off you in a year, what do you expect? For him to offer you 6 months of free service plus a cooked meal? LOL Get over it mate, Foxtel is better for DTV, you did yourself a favour and went to foxtel. Good on ya
anthj Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 I want to cancel my Optus Digital and get Foxtel but I'm not sure if this is the right move. I have Optus Cable internet and it's bundled where I pay $10 less per month. I'm not sure that if I cancel this digital TV subscription if I will still get this discount on my internet? Or does digital TV have nothing to do with this and is it because I'm an Optus customer for my home phone?

Dilmar Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 (edited) Hey sohai, you sound like you're in the know. Do you know if/when Optus TV will show Channel Seven in widescreen via cable in Melbourne? Edited March 25, 2009 by Dilmar
Brasil Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 I hate Foxtel with a passion, they have stuffed me around every time I have dealt with them. The first time I dealt with them, I was getting an installation on a Saturday - usual story, we'll be there between 9 and 12 or whatever. At one o'clock they rang me to say they weren't coming because it was raining - it was brilliant sunshine outside. They asked me when I'd like to reschedule to, I said next Saturday and she said "Oh no, we don't do installations on Saturday." Evidently! On our second dealing, I signed up via a door to door hawker. The guy came around, took one look and said "You'll need a roof plumber." Oh, ok, well I'm not going to hire a roof plumber for half a day, can we make a specific time. The installer said "of course, when you ring up the help desk, just tell them what time you've booked the plumber for, they'll book me immediately after". So I ring the plumber, book him in, ring the help desk (25 mins on hold), and get cut off. Ring the help desk again (25 mins on hold), get through, the operator says "Oh no, we couldn't possibly commit to a time, you'll need to book him for the whole period." A few more phone calls backwards and forwards (25 mins on hold each time) and it's clear that there is no way I'm getting out of this without hiring a plumber to sit around for several hours in the hope that the Foxtel installer eventually turns up. So I cancel with Foxtel and get Optus - came around a couple of days later, installed it in an hour (no roof plumber requried). Then I get a bill for a "cancellation fee" - $200 from memory - from Foxtel. I write back, explain that they dicked me around, and there was no way I was paying it. Then I get a few more bills. Then I get a letter saying they are contacting a debt collector, all because I wouldn't pay $200 when all they had done was send a guy around to say he couldn't install it! I should have sent them a bill for the five or six hours I spent on hold to them. I would go without pay TV altogether before I ever dealt with Foxtel again. In fact, I would pound my own testicles with a hammer before I dealt with them again. I love my footy - the only reason to have pay really - but if Optus dies I'll watch the replays on Bigpond before I subject myself to Foxtel's so called "customer service" a third time.
maxus Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 hey mates i got call from foxtel mentioning that they are providing service free for a month and also a reward card where i will get discount on every shopping i do. Guys if u wish to know more about it email me your home number and first name and I will fwd it to the sales rep providing this offer. This offer is only for non foxtel customers and I am the lucky one. Cheers mates. Enjoy Maxus
timy Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 Lol great story Brasil. The customer service people at foxtel are dead set robotic morons. They dont even know the facts after foxtel has announced them to the media. Id bet if you rung them tonight the csrs would know nothing about the winter olympics coverage announced this week.
laggerman Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 (edited) I moved house yesterday and spoke to optus today about cable tv.Just finding someone to talk to in "sales" was hard enough, which is always a bad sign - I called the number from the website for optus tv sales and the automated system threw me in random directions despite expressing understanding my voice responses, and I had no more luck when the switchboard operators tried to put me through. Took 4 phone calls as was hung up on by the system repeatedly. By then I decided I was unlikely to sign up anyway. Looks like Optus TV is finally dead. Optus are no longer accepting new TV customers. From the Optus website: All packages are for existing customers only, and include access to free-to-air channels. Edited August 27, 2009 by laggerman

From the Optus website: All packages are for existing customers only, and include access to free-to-air channels. I am surprised it last this long, there is no way that Australia could have supported two competing pay tv newtorks. Once the channel merger happened and Optus handed the reins over to Fox, the war was pretty much over. I am guessing there will be a period soon where Optus will pull out and Fox have an offer where they will allow people to change over to foxtel for free.
reubot Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 Optus TV dumps monthly magazine http://www.tvtonight.com.au/2009/12/optus-...y-magazine.html
jagguy Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 Not sure if Optus TV is really dying and many people complain about Telstra
BamBBBam Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 Of course it's dying. They're not accepting new customers. They are only reselling Foxtel now. They've cancelled their magazine. They are letting anyone leave with no penalty. Can't get much clearer than that.

On the horizon I hear that some of the internet providers (eg Hulu) are looking to set up. There's a rumour that Hulu will also take part in a bid (presumably a joint bid) for the AFL rights too. If that happens, Foxtel can probably kiss a good percentage of its market farewell too. Most people I know only have Foxtel for the footy.

You dont think that foxtel knows the importance of its footy coverage. They would py anything to keep it. And yes they can afford it!!!

Interesting that this thread started years ago... and optus TV is still dying a slow death...
Voyager Posted August 18, 2010 Posted August 18, 2010 Any further news on the slow death of Optus tv featuring Foxtel? Should we expect an announcement soon? And, if going, how does Optus plan to deal with the current subscribers?
Cody Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 Any further news on the slow death of Optus tv featuring Foxtel? Should we expect an announcement soon? And, if going, how does Optus plan to deal with the current subscribers? yes, they (finally) announced what everyone knew anyway, that they are exiting their current Pay TV operation and will instead focus on IPTV. No word on what will happen with existing customers, other than that they will continue to receive their service for the time being. they are apparently down to under 100k customers anyway.
newtaste Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 Today's AFR reports that Foxtel is trying to get Optus to continue with their pay TV service beyond the expiry of the current contract.
Jdrive Posted August 25, 2010 Posted August 25, 2010 Today's AFR reports that Foxtel is trying to get Optus to continue with their pay TV service beyond the expiry of the current contract. I was pretty gutted when I got foxtel about 6 months ago, I tried optus first as they would have been cheaper for what we wanted (at the time anyway), and got told the bad news that I was a few months too late to sign up. Damn.

I can't help but imagine this is a lost cause especially since it's no longer available to non-existing subscribers.
fredofrog Posted October 3, 2010 Posted October 3, 2010 Foxtel are renegotiating the commission to Optus for maintaininng customers given the impending NBN inspired IPTV and Telstra TBox competition starting to build momentum. Also the singapore paytv operator (fetch??) is trying to undercut local operators (not a bad thing)

Guest Jadakas Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 Any news re renegotiations? Or any other news? AUSTRALIA'S second-largest telco Optus will again offer Foxtel pay-TV to its cable customers from February next year, after stopping the service in 2009 because it was not profitable to do so. The wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore Telecommunications Ltd says it will also for the first time be able to sell Foxtel to customers outside its cable footprint, with delivery via satellite. The change is a result of a new content supply agreement that Optus and Foxtel have signed, the companies said. Under the new agreement, Optus's cable customers will be able to sign up to Foxtel, have access to the pay-TV company's iQ set-top boxes, and subscribe to up to 20 high definition channels. Optus would act as a sales agent for Foxtel outside its cable network, with channels supplied via satellite, the companies said. Foxtel was unprofitable for Optus if customers did not also buy broadband or telephone services, Optus chief executive Paul O'Sullivan said last month. "We do not actively promote (Foxtel) because it is not a moneymaker for us," Mr O'Sullivan told Fairfax Media on November 12. The deal may go some way to helping lift Foxtel's subscriber growth, which has been sluggish over the past year amid a cautious consumer market due to concerns about interest rates, the global economy and cost of living pressures. Pay-TV providers have also faced increased competition from the free to air networks, which have all launched new digital offerings that have proved popular with viewers
