Jeff, wish you luck with the raffle mate

Well done John. Great car, which from a price/style/performance ratio is hard to beat. No doubt your trips to Quality Records etc. will be far more enjoyable.

Mr Oval,

Would you like tomato sauce with your new GTI...?

Didn't know that VW made tomato sauce...?

According to an article at Autoblog " VW created its special sauce as a compliment to its unique curry sausage(!), and the ketchup features a thicker consistency and a special flavor compared to your run-of-the-mill Heinz. VW started bottling the stuff en masse in 1997, and it sold 20,000 units the first year. Since then, the ketchup sales have only gotten stronger, and last year, VW sold 425,000 bottles. "

Maybe you should order a batch of those sausages, too :)

cheers

Probably right. Mind you, judging by the photos, I'd say JohnA was a bit too liberal with sauce.... :)

Morning John,

Congrats on the Golf. Looks sensational! And no doubt drives just as well.

Looking at your pics, especially the interior shot, I had fleeting visions of wandering down to VW myself for a look :) A much nicer cabin than what I have in the Z...

Enjoy!

Cheers, Dave.

Thanks Dave

in actual fact i looked at around 12 350Z's also.

Unfortunately everyone i saw was not in good condition.

Was also shocked at how poorly people looked after their cars.

One in perticular, 2008 model with only 13,000 km, and the leather had a few tears and cracks, and was involved in a smash which the owner tried to hide, that was until i pointed it out and he didn't deny it.

I did enjoy the way they drove, however i got sick of been dissapointed with everyone i saw.

So i cracked it and went and grabbed a brand new car instead :)

Excellent news John ,ours is still end of May .

How about a group buy for the APR mods .

Cheers

Just saw some clips of the APR stage 3 VW's and F me, freaking awesome.

I think i will go straight to stage 2 with full exhaust, but will opt for a different intake and the carbanio one doesn't do it for me noise wise :D

stage 3 i think may be a little too crazy, 300+ HP and 400+ torque on a front wheeler would be interesting though.

claimed 0-100 5.3 and 1/4 mile 11.5 seconds :D

Stage 1 will be plenty enough and a very safe tune.

I love that you can lock it out and valet mode so others cant thrash it.

I want the full exhaust and intake for noise :D

Mind you i should just do stage 1 and save stage 3 for the R20 next year :D would suit the AWD better i would think.

Anyone who went to stage 3 on a GTI would need to have a torque steer fetish.

I owned a MK V GTI and did stage one and it was great, but if you want performance beyond that it is definitely time for a change of car and something much better.

Part of the great reputation of the GTI is based on its balance and usable performance characteristics and any mods beyond stage one tend to spoil that balance.

I have driven a stage 3 GTI and although it is quick, it really wasn't that good to drive. Quite frankly you can mod this car up to a power spec to which it was never designed for and which is far beyond its dynamic capabilities.

The steering which is only passable in the first place becomes a tug of war with the driver and massive power induced understeer really spoils the party

rantan, hense my post above yours.

The stage 1 and 2 will be fine for the GTI. Stage 2 doesn't give too much more over stage 1

With the R20 though (which i believe they went back to the pirelli engine and turbo) and the AWD, stage 3 should be very good

Good point John. Also, the R20 sounds delicious and as you say, well suited to the full monty in engine tuning.

will be interested to take it for a test drive once released though.

Have to sum it all up, $60k for the car with some options and almost $14k on a stage 3 mod starts getting expensive

guys, have you heard of bluefin.

they send you the hand controller, and the retune and you do it yourself.

lots of people seem happy.

they have a stage 1, 2 3 and 4 and tell you what supporting mods are required.

Beautiful thing is you can put the tune back to factory when going in for service or warranty, and re-tune when you get it back home.

Also half the price of APR.

APR seems very expensive here. USA, ECU tune is only $599, here its $1600 go figure

bluefin is $800 locally and it can also be used to see error codes

hmmmm, more thinking and research to do

Think I'll do the APR ECU upgrade at the 7500km service which I'll have done at http://www.prestigeandperformance.com.au/ at this stage I think, rather than going back to dealer. Don't know that I'd do anymore than that. Starts to get expensive for a car I'll likely keep for 4 yrs or so.

Just re-read this

what 7500 service?

its 15000 or 1 year. There is a free 2000km check up and oils top ups, otherwise 15000km

Posted

They told me the free check, then 7500, then every 15000 after that. There's some talk on vwwatercooled about whether the 7500 is necessary.

More fun than hifi Rob. I only look at stereo.net to look at the GTI thread now. Then the rest of my time is at vwwatercooled, well excluding time spent at other sites that shan't be named here given the G-rating.

na i think they are trying a shifty.

My dealer took me down to the service department, and they told me, free check, then 15000 or 1 year. However they did say, welcome to bring it in every half year for a quick check and free top up, no booking necessary

They use synthetics also.

Don't wear the 7500 service charges

You guys, modding turbo cars, bloody hoons!

Love it!:P

hehehehehehehe, very addictive

I'm going to the movies tonight with a friend who works at the vw dealership, so I'll ask him what they recommend re servicing at 7500. I dare not tell you what freebies I got from said friend as a little present from vw last week. Oh, what the hell, no it wasn't the tomato sauce bottles mentioned above, I was given several VW condoms with their logo and the slogan "Drive Safe" hehe
