Guest JohnA Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 @JohnA - I looked at the Alpine "all in one" solution but preferred the Garmin navigation. I use Alpine exclusively as my head unit of choice in all my vehicles. I just replaced the old IVA-W202E with an IVA-D511RB in my VW. I love the iPod integration and the sound quality. Let us know how you find the Alpine navi. The main reasons i went the alpine unit was to get the ipod connectivity, as the wife wants it, and i didn't like the VW unit as it is way too slow. Also like that bluetooth is built in and no extra boxes to tuck away in places. Sat nav i dont care for too much. But most of all, price is a hell of a lot cheaper then the buil in VW options and i don't need to take it to a VW dealer, or spend money to have it all coded so the car knows its all installed. Will report back my thoughts. Are GTD folk welcome here too? Ordered mine in December... not expected here until July because it's a build-to-order with manual transmission and Dynaudio sound system. Starting to go a bit mental waiting for it. Congrats on the purchase, and yes more then welcome. Didn't realise the wait on them was soo long also. VW really need topull their finger out. I was going to get the new polo GTI for the wife, but when they told me its blown out to an 1o month wait, told them they can stick it. Going to test drive a Gti tomorrow, both manual and DSG. I think I might just like the DSG, even though I love a manual car. Also considering the Nissan 370Z and of course, the Golf R. Had a god lok at the Gti today at the dealer, and the interior layout and quality is first rate. Very nice indeed. Be interested to read your thoughts. If you are looking at 370z money, go straight to the golf R and don't bother testing the GTI. The AWD would be so much nicer Hi Well its been 10 months since I've had the car and by next week it will have 30K on the clock .The cars still stock and it will probably stay that way ,I'll just upgrade the tyres when due . I'm happy with the options I chose and the active damper control has been very good ,most of the time I drive around in comfy mode. Cheers WOW, 30k in 10 months...i have done 8k in just over 1 year If the car wasn't going to the wife i had a nice long list of mods to get done. Now that money will go towards the new car As for rattles, i think i got lucky, only had one
Super Mustud Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 As it seems the Golf is a stayer but the wife will be getting it Mrs John is a lucky lady.
damohpi Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 most the rattles in my R32 started around the 25k mark, reminds me I need to book mine in to get some new ones looked at, my renault had less rattles !

Guest JohnA Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Mrs John is a lucky lady. No, i am the lucky one, that she has no issues with me swapping over cars after 1 year. Of course it is win win for both of us
Guest Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 most the rattles in my R32 started around the 25k mark, reminds me I need to book mine in to get some new ones looked at, my renault had less rattles ! Hi Damo My 7 year old Maxima doesn't have rattles and thats done 190K .I'm surprised how some people are willing to accept rattles in cars and defend them and not take there cars back to be fixed .I wonder how much of it comes down to build tolerance and temperature variations between different country's.The car was off the road @ 1 month but I didn't really care VW gave me a new car to drive while mine was in . Cheers
Stirlo Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Well after having driven the Gti today, all I can say is wow. What an awesome little car! Only drove the DSG, no neeed to bother driving the manual, the dsg is just that good. The interior, the way the car sits planted on the road, and the way it pulls rather cleanly out of corners are all fantastic. If the R is better, which I hope it is, then it can only be fantastic. Dealer is telling me there is a 12 month wait on the R, I plan to ring other dealers in the morning, and see if this is actually the case. Couldn't agree more about some of the media/bluetooth options, absolute rip off!

If your going for the 18" wheels or 19" wheels get the active damper control ,in sports mode it also changes the stearing weight . Cheers
Guest JohnA Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 If your going for the 18" wheels or 19" wheels get the active damper control ,in sports mode it also changes the stearing weight .Cheers or grab some KW v2 coilovers
Guest JohnA Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 i added a few gauges to the car today boost, coolant temp, rev with shift light, 0-100 time, intake temp. Now i know what you are thinking, what a bloody ****, and normally i would agree with you, as it would seem i have loaded the car with a bunch of gauges... i think this is actually very tasteful, and because it also plugs into the obd port, it can read and clear any fault codes
Guest Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 (edited) or grab some KW v2 coilovers Not worth it ,unless your going to start to race on weekends .Why loose the flexibility in a car for street use and the gauges pointless even if you think its tasteful .No point fiity all the kiddy stuff if you don't drive it . Guest JohnA Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 i like the fact that you can change rebound and height with them. v3 i wouldn't bother with unless tracking the car, and v1 you miss out on rebound settings, but from what i have read are a very comfy ride. i am going to put some on as i want to lower the car anyways and been able to set the rebound to my own preferance is a bonus.

Much easier by pushing a button .
Guest Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 thats for lazy people I rather be lazy than thinking I can do better than VW .We are talking about a street car . Cheers
Guest JohnA Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 everything can be improved on and it depends what you want out of the car.
Guest Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 been able to set the rebound to my own preferance is a bonus. You must travel down the same streets every day ,what happens when you go down a different street & road.Do you get out with your pit crew and adjust the suspension . Cheers
Guest JohnA Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 i've had coilovers in both my previous WRX's and also changed sway bars and other bits and pieces. Once setup to exactly how i like it thats how its left. As i said, depends what you want out of the car. Obviously your needs are different to mine, but i prefer to let people know there are other options out there. Just like performance mods, you may not want or need any, others may want a simple tune, and others want to go nuts. Is one wrong and the other right? no just different goals for the individual
Guest Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Obviously your needs are different to mine, They must be ,I drive my car ,I don't mod it and park it . Cheers
Guest JohnA Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Really, thats what you got? damn, i bow my head down to you mr i know best, and walk away from this conversation
zipstartcanoe Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 You must travel down the same streets every day ,what happens when you go down a different street & road.Do you get out with your pit crew and adjust the suspension .Cheers I put 12K worth of 6 way adjustable Proflex coilovers in a couple of of my cars. Despite having a significantly higher spring rates than standard, the cars handle AND ride significantly better than the stock suspension at all speeds on every type of surface. It is not just about the adjustment, it is about the quality of the damping; the reduction in primary stichion, the frequency response between high and low speed piston movement over the entire amplitude range, and the lack of fade. In short, both cars now brake and turn better, feel smoother, are safer and much nicer to drive.

Thats very good zip, do you also club race the car or just use it to putt around the street's because so far in the GTi I haven't come to a corner on the street that has me sweating to get around it and I have some great corners near my house the only thing you have to watch is tractors . Like John said my needs are different to his. Cheers

Guest Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 Clearly, you need to pick up the pace I have enough trouble getting in & out the car now let alone driving at pace . Cheers Mal
Stirlo Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 Well I became very interested in the Golf R after driving the Gti the other day, and yesterday I located a dealer with the R for a test drive. Must say that I like the R even more again. Absolutely clincal about the way it does things, no fuss, just does them. The chassis is great and could easily handle more hp. As for the suspension, I spoke to two independant salesmen, and got the same answer "The active suspension isn't worth the extra, the difference isn't big enough to warrant it." It is a moot point in my case anyway, as the car I am likely to buy has already been ordered and will be in the country soon, thus all options are already decided (no active suspension on any of the Golf Rs they have coming in). This doesn't really bother me, as most of the VW options font really appeal to me anyway or are way overpriced.
