I bit the bullet and finally bought a TiVo last week from Clive Anthony's in Castle Hill, NSW as follows:

320GB version

Home Networking Package

Wireless Dongle

1 Year Warranty

$596

Set up was easy...explained well.

I'm one who hates changes...so it took a few days to get used to the layout and features when compared to my old Topfield 5000 Materpiece, but after a week I quite like it and am very happy with the decision!

The main thing I was worried about was the fast forward function for skipping through ads, but seriously, it's as quick as the 30 second jump on the Topfield, and when you press play after fast forwarding, the automatic few second rewind works a treat to start at the beginning of the show. :-)

I'll see how long it takes to fill up the 320GB hard drive, and I think I'll lean towards adding a 1TB external hard drive so my total capacity is 1.32 TB.

Still finding out new tricks and shortcuts on the remote, but all well so far. :-)

The ticketed sale price for the 320GB TiVo is $540 in Clive Anthony's at Castle Hill ...HNP comes free with the 320GB model as long as it is registered by end of January 2010. They threw the Wireless Dongle in for $56 - for a total of $596....just to beat Myers current sale as below.

Myers at Castle Hill current sale....$699 for the 320GB TiVo, HNP, Wireless Dongle & a $100 Myer Gift Card.

I'm off to Brisbane tomorrow until Thursday and dont have a scanner at home, but if you need a copy of the receipt, I could fax it from work at the end of next week or try and scan it...let me know.

HNP is still free till the end of the month on the 160's bought from HN or JB. Not sure about Myers though.

It's finally time for me to buy a TIVO, I can't wait to record oneHD 24 hours a day!

Anyway I definitely want the 320GB model with Free HNP and Wireless Adapter included.

I've seen a lot of people on here getting these for about $600 from Myer at their one day sale and a few from other stores in Sydney, but I tried to get this deal in JB Hifi in Melbourne yesterday and the best the salesman could do was $660, and he wasn't willing to move any further...$600 was a "ridiculous" price!

Has anyone else got any better than $660 in Melbourne recently for 320GB Tivo with Wireless Adapter included?

Also, is the HNP any good?

I paid $629 for 320GB model with Free HNP and Wireless Adapter included at JB's in Melbourne CBD between Christmas and New Year. They had a promotion sign for a "$100 gift card with every Tivo purchase" but would not honour it as they said only if you paid their ticketed price (this was after I got to the register). I was told this price a few weeks earlier and had not got around to buying it - just went in and said this is what you told me earlier and they seemed happy to oblige. I did not push the gift card issue too much but probably should have as it is false advertising due to the lack of fine print about the ticketed price.

The HNP does what it says it will do and has been handy to transfer wirelessly downloaded shows from the PC - have not had the need to transfer to the PC as yet but have tried it and this works fine also. No matter what I did could not get it to work when running a firewall - needs to be disabled each time. I am also using Vuze (Azureus) to transfer files to the Tivo - anyone who already has the Tivo and does not want to shell out for HNP you can use this to transfer and it works well - it is one way traffic though. Vuze automatically detects the Tivo and will do any conversion necessary; and it also does the same for the XBOX 360 which I have on a separate TV.

cheers

Thanks belldogs - I popped down to JB this afternoon and picked up the 320GB TIVO with Wireless adapter for $629...but yeah, still no $100 gift voucher. Seems like a pretty decent price so I'm happy enough.

It won't work without HNP which gives the TiVo a MAK address. You must have HNP to do any transfers.

Myer had great deals between Boxing Day and December 31 with 20 % of all Tivo's. The 320 gig was $559 and included wireless adapter,Home Networking Package and $100 gift voucher. Deal has finished now though.

Congrats, welcome to the easy world of TiVo.

It's been great once getting used to the different format to the Topfield.

I'm still trying to get used to not knowing how much space is left on the hard drive. Does anyone know if this is possible?

Just keep an eye on your Deleted and suggestions folders. once your deleted folder gets low you know suggestions are are risk, then once your suggestions get low, your recordings are at risk.

I don't even think about it

Have several movies sitting on there and never had anything deleted

One of the first things I did was to turn off suggestions so TiVo wasn't filling the hard drive by itself

I don't need a PVR to tell me what it thinks I want to watch.

As I'm sure has been mentioned, Tivo Suggestions don't "fill the hard drive". Any space you haven't used for your recordings is temporarily used to store suggested/random recordings. If this space is needed for your future recordings its available without any intervention.

As you say, any recording you've made won't be deleted if you set its property as such. It will never be deleted in preference to a suggested recording. Other than those two rules the Tivo will apply ranking to all recordings on your drive to work out what recording is more important to you.

By doing this you are missing one of the Great features of the TiVo.

It might take a while for the TiVo to narrow down the suggestions to shows you like, but it does work quite well and each week manages to find shows I like, that I have missed when browsing the TV Guide.

Just make sure you give shows you like a 1,2,or 3 thumbs UP rating and the same but thumbs down for shows you don't like. It will narrow down the suggestions to be more relevant quite quickly.

Just think of the suggestions folder as another deleted folder. Suggestions do not take away any space from your regular shows and will always be deleted before any of your other recordings.

One of the first shows I watched after getting my TiVo was Mythbusters

TiVo decided I liked watching SBS documentaries and started recording them ad nauseum

I turned off suggestions and haven't turned it back on since

I bought an easy to use PVR, not some artificial intelligence device

I'll decide what I watch and when I watch it

If I miss some show I may have enjoyed, I'll never know

So I'm not really missing anything

Absolutely thrilled with my TiVo as a PVR.

If you wanted to get around your problem all you need to do is give thumbs down to the suggestions you don't like. then over time it will narrow the results down to mostly shows that you do like.

Fair enough if you don't want to use all the features of your TiVo, but still don't understand why you need to turn if off.

Having them on does not take anything away from it's other features and does not limit what shows you record.

If you find it too much of a chore to delete shows from there, just think of it as another deleted folder and let it manage itself. You may be surprised when you scroll though the folder to find a gem of program that you are glad it recorded.

A lot depends on the way you use your TiVo

We mostly watch live TV and record a second program to watch later

I know a lot of people record everything and rarely watch live TV because of those horrible ad things (which make free TV possible)

So having a hard drive full of programs I may or may not like really isn't relevant

I wouldn't ever watch them anyway

and considering the amount of data TiVo collects, I'm not about to give programs a thumbs up or down

To me, that's just dumb

Yes TiVo, I like that show. Thank you for giving it to me.

Appreciate the personal preference in this area (wouldn't use it myself). I'm just suggesting that turning suggestions off makes zero difference to when the harddrive fills up.

Each to their own...as long as you are happy with the purchase. I know that I am. :-)

I actually like the suggestions and agree with Peter that occasionally it records some great shows that are along with my preferences...so when I have spare time and have watched all the other selections I have recorded...I then check out the suggestions.

Thanks for the info on how to keep track of the hard drive by checking the quantity of the deleted items and suggestions boxes.

Is there a quick way to delete a recording while watching it before you get to the end?

There are a few ways.

The easiest is just to press left to get you back to either the now playing list or program details screens (which screen depends on which one you were on when you pressed play), then press clear to delete it.

or more steps, press the skip button to take you to the end of the program, then left, up, and select.

Finally pulled the trigger on a Tivo today, just used the online deal, HNP,Wireless and the box itself at $599 happy enough and will get a WD 1TB once I've had a play........ :)

Hi Guys,

Finally took the plunge and got myself a 320 Tivo from Myer Doncaster (VIC) for $594 with HNP via redemption from Tivo. This did not include wireless dongle.

Also had a couple of queries regarding a few minor glitches (probably due to me rather than the unit itself) which I posted in the "Tivo Hd Issue reports" topic

http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtop...8986&st=660

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I'm new to this forum so apologies for any formatting or posting blunders

Cheers

Andy
