tonyjg Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 Poll - Do you still have OR have your HDDDVD Player/s Where - its been just over 1 year since Format War 'ended' - so a quick poll (my first here - hope it works !) to see HOW MANY MEMBERS have kept their DVD Players - OR - HAVE SOLD them. I've put up the options of YES / NO / CONSIDERING / KEEPING 1 - SOLD OFF OTHERS. This should at least cover all bases. In your posts - you might want to mention how many players you still have PLUS how many discs you still have.
ausnew Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 My player is not going anywhere ! A lot of people move their players on with their collections, bit imo it just is not worth it. You get nothing for the disks nowadays, unless thay are one of the chosen overseas limited few I also do not see the point of selling off one format for $10 +/-, and then buy replacements in Blu for $25 +/-. The quality might be marginally better on some limited disks, but generally it is the same
Tommo1503559980 Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 I bought a player and ~50 HD DVD's around a month ago for a bargain price and intend to keep them for a while. Far cheaper than working up a collection of Blu-ray's.
mfedley Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 (edited) Do people think that prices are going to continue to fall with the players? I'm only asking because I would like to know what people think the XE-1's might be worth in 6-12 months. I have my eye on one but want to only spend around $300. Ironically, I purchased an EP10 for $250 only a couple of months ago. From what I have heard, they are not as well built as the XE-1's which are supposeably built like a tank. Also, my collection is not going anywhere. Why would you re-buy titles in Blu-Ray for triple the price unless it is a title with a much better PQ or AQ. I am aware that titles like Serenity may be worth upgrading, but to me thats an ok movie but not one I would purchase for $40. So I'll keep it on HD and watch it again in probably 4 years. I do have 200+ titles though with another 10 on order Edited March 8, 2009 by mfedley

Sold an E1, EP10 and the XE1 in Feb - March 08 as I thought that I would go down the blu road only. Brought an LG BH200 (first time Blu) and kept the E1 as back up. (Late June 08) Picked up an XE-1 from a fellow forum member in Feb 09 for $350. So all in all, I have 77 HD DVD titles. The two players which cost me $450 and most of the titles were purchased during the fire sales in early 08. Blu Ray does not offer any real wow factor do justify the extra $$$. I'm sure that I will still be watching my HD DVD's in 10 plus years. By then I hope to be running a server. Cheers Struggo Edited March 8, 2009 by Struggo

Cheers Struggo Two players (LG BH200 and XE1) only costing you $450 meaning the BH200 is only $100??? Surely not, I imported my first LG BH200 from US more than six months ago and that costs me just over $500 which I thought was a bargain at the time considering it can play both format.

Nah mate, two HD DVD players (XE1- & E1) for $450. Back in July 08, the LG BH200 cost me $700 delivered. Cheers Struggo Edited March 8, 2009 by Struggo
com59841503560232 Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 I will be keeping my XE1 and 100+ movies. It saves me buying some blu that I already have on HDDVD. The only one I have doubled up on was Transformers which had a better sound track on blu. The difference in pq between HDDVD and Bluray is negligble imo.
50mxe20 Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 Will not be selling my player OR movies! Agreed. Interesting statistics forming above!

50mxe20 Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 Agree Nah. Most of us are both. Does that make purple.
djbigk1503560164 Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 Me thinks we might have a bit of "survivorship bias" in our results!!ie only people who still are "red" read this forum!! Was just about to post the same thing, then realised I didn't need to, then obviously posted anyway. Would have been interesting to see if the people who had sold theirs were still hanging around. No doubt they sold them and stopped visiting this section of the forum. As we've all seen there has been an influx of player for sale threads here of late. I'm sure they at least enjoyed the hunting process of trying to grab as many titles as possible for as little as possible! I personally picked up 80 or so titles (at an average price of $9.18 excluding boxsets and hardware, or $10.01 including boxsets, or $12.32 including boxsets AND hardware EP10 & 360 Drive). My total cost was roughly $1,000 so if I was to sell them off (looking at recent price trends) it would be at a loss. I'm still working through the movies, with many that I have never seen and have wanted to watch for some time. Granted there's some that didn't come close to troubling the Academy come award time (eg. Scorpion King, Poseidon, Lady In the Water, Mr Bean's Holiday etc) but they're a minority of the collection and will still get a watching (if you only watch highly acclaimed movies you start to appreciate them less - best to mix in some ordinary or worse movies - I personally recommend Evan Almighty). The value to me is much higher than the $1,000 that I spent, so I will enjoy them immensely. Can't see the logic in moving them on - I mean come on, I'm only 3 hours into the 75 hour making of documentary on The Frighteners HD DVD, which cost me a staggering $3.92!
blairy Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 XE1 and XBOX add on and 37 discs. A number of unwanted discs off loaded in recent months. I did have the lot up for sale at one stage but couldn't get any takers on a 'purchase all" basis. Subsequently I've had a look at what I've got that's not even available on BD yet (perhaps never will be). I've got about 17 that aren't on BD and say nine of those are (for me at least) keepers (e.g. Eagles Live, The Pianist. Shaun of the Dead, Children of Men, Inside Man, Riddick, Pitch Black, Stardust, Van Helsing etc). Some of these may have been recently released on BD. Cheers blairy
SDL Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 I have 2 XE1's and an X-Box add on (not really used) plus somewhere around 150 discs. As ausnew said, what would be the point in selling a player for $500 and discs at $10 or less and then replacing most for $25-30. I will buy Blu I don't have on HD DVD and when the day comes that my HD DVD players fail I will get what I can for the discs and buy whatever the new format is then.
venny59 Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 (edited) I have just got into HD Dvds as I got a deal on Ebay E1 and 62 movies $450.00. now have more Hd Movies and 5 Hd Players 2 E10s, 2 E1s and a A2 converted to E1 That gives me one on Each Tv ( Including Kids Tv) and a spare one incase I have problems. Also now have A Samsung Blu Ray player. Will be looking for a XE-1 later down the track as I think they will go cheaper still. Quality OF The Hd is much the same as Blu and can get Movies a lot cheaper so in the long run Save $$$. Also nothing wrong with the Toshiba as a normal Dvd player ( also Upscales) so why sell ?? andrewdavid Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 I just bought 20 cheap HD DVDs in Canada making 109 HD DVDs vs about 115 Blu-rays I also have two LG HD DVD drives in my PC No way my player is going anywhere If it ever fails I plan to convert my collection to hard drive and play them via TV attached my media player or burn them to Blu-ray (todays technical issues will hopefully be better sorted when this day comes) I can't see every replacing these HD DVDs with Blu-ray versions while there are other options
Cody Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 hehe, not sure how valid the results of the poll will be, given that those who have sold up probably dont come into this section of the forum anymore. i see there are only 2 votes for people that have sold up (and one of those is mine!). interesting to note the comment that the firesale HD-DVD's cost on average $9xx each. you really cant go wrong with that sort of pricing - which is basically what a new release DVD rental costs. so even if you watched them once and threw them out, you could argue you're still not behind as such.
ausnew Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 Maybe we should publish a link from the blu forum section
joz Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 Still have mine. Can't see the reason to sell and rebuy at silly prices. Anyhow if I sold of all my HD stuff the few hundred $$ gain isn't going to change my life. But rebuying all those discs would annoy the crap out of me. But I am not buying anymore HD discs, what I have is sufficient and I still havn't watched them all anyhow.

joz Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Just an observation. But it seems that if I sold both my XE1 and my SonyS1E.I'd take a bigger financial hit with the Sony Bought Both new for approx the same $$
