My eldest is looking for a new TV. We went out yesterday and he found a Samsung Series 5 50" plasma for $1,990.

Having never looked at Plasma's before, does this sound like a good buy?

Are there any known issues with them?

If it's the FullHD PS50A550 then it is a great buy. I got one on the weekend and spent 2 days playing various Blu-Ray discs and PS3 games on it. Fantastic picture quality. Great black levels great build quality. For the price it's hard to fault.

However, I have found an issue with mine and I need to phone Samsung to see if it's a known issue or if my set is faulty. Using the HDMI-1 input wit my PS3, the signal keeps dropping and re-establishing itself fine. the other HDMI ports work perfectly.

I think it's a problem with the TV. Better to call and get it fixed while it's under warranty.

To the OP, please look for a post that describes a way to get it for $1850 from Myer (price match plus gift card promo). It's there somewhere.

Thanks. I have passed this info on to my son.

Unfortunately he has to wait for KRudd bonus so may miss out on current special.

OK folks. How's this for stupidity.

My son goes to the store near his work and sees the Sammy 50" plasma on display.

He says to the salesperson that he saw the same TV at one of their associated stores for $1,991 and asks if they can do that price

Guy says no way. Best he can do is about $350 more

While still in the store, he rings the first store and the guy tells him he sold the one he had

Son asks can you get another one for that price

Guy looks at the system and says that the only one he can get is the one from the store he happens to be in

Son says so you can do that one for the same price of $1,991

Guy says yeah no problem, I'll just get it shipped over here

Son gets off the phone and says to the sales guy that the other store will take his stock and sell it to him for $1,991

Sales guy says bull****.

Son leaves store determined to not buy from there ever again.

I've never heard of anything so ridiculous.

Anyway, your son may not need to be determined not to buy from there again with the current economic climate.

Edit: Just read post above

I have, unfortunately. This was in JB. The salesman was rude enough to boast - "I will not let you walk out of this store with the item for that price" in spite of the item being included in their catalogue. I just walked into Myer next door with a copy of the catalogue, showed it to the manager and came out with the item for 2 dollars lower than the catalogue price.

Why do people keep wanting to get into the Service menu when they have no idea what they are doing and can potentially stuff up the settings of their TV???

If you are going to ask for help, at least post how you got in in the first place, and what you did that made things go wrong. Wouldn't want someone trying to help, end up stuffing their set too

Why not just reset the picture settings to the factory default? Page 31 in the manual.

I already reset the factory setting to default in services menu as well. Just the picture didnt feel right. i try to calibrate the TV but ended up screwing thing up. I just need the default setting for the DTV Mode in the picture (Example R Offset, R Gain, Sub Contrast). i changed that setting in the wrong place it should not be in services mode.

If that's under Calibration Adjust, it's R-offset 64, G-offset 50 and B-offset 64.

Now, stay out of the SM.
