Was in JB-Hi earlier (Malaga, WA) and they have the Sony 2400ES receiver for $1242 (or close). Below it they had the 3400ES for $969 (or something). I questioned the validity of this and the assistant said it was a head-office cock-up..... The catalogue even shows the 3400ES (if you look close) at this price......

The mind boggles

Sony is not in very good financial shape, so they try to move stocks by dropping price. Have seen 3400ES around $980 over the last few months. Maybe some lazy marketing people forgot to lower the 2400 price :angry2:

Yeagh but this was a JB cockup not a Sony one (or so I was led to believe)

Anyone actually own a 3400es here ?

I'm thinking about getting one and would be interested in any feedback. I'm aware of Neon Kittens hissing issues, not sure if that was a defective unit or common to all 3400es's.

Any other quirks I should know about ? Hows the sound quality ?

Cheers,

Tex.

Just be sure to check a sample 3400ES out using good headphones with 5.1 or 7.1 LPCM as the source. The hissing will, I'm betting, be very audible.

Thanks Neon......I'm guessing a possible test may be playing a DVD or Blue ray sending LPCM and sitting on a silent menu. Then cranking up the volume and listening. Not sure how many disks have 5.1 menu audio though......

What do you think ?

Thanks......Tex.

If you play a BD on one of Sony's current BluRay players and hit pause, the audio stream should stay active and let you hear the noise clearly; either that, or a PS3 just sitting on its XMB screen.

My tests with this back at the time indicated that while the noise is present regardless, it's unlikely to become really annoying until you start downmixing channels (hence the reason why it's REALLY noticeable in headphones).

However, here merely setting things up with no centre channel and no secondary surrounds (2/2.1 in other words) was enough to make the noise clearly audible even during movie playback.

Hi WBulldogs,

Do you have the Hissing issue that Neon Kitten had with his 3400 ?? Heres a link to the thread on this forum. http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=75715.

Are you able to test ??

Thanks......Tex.

Tex, no I don't have that hissing issue. However, I only have dvd player and ipod dock connected.

Sony sucks! my 2400es was basically dead on arrival with surround faults. took 2months + for them to replace new one. I think Neon Kitten should have his unit checked up. (I bought a Pioneer SC-LX71 for home theathre after that). Now they replaced me with the 3400es I just use it as 2ch amp.

The hissing/noise problem only affects multichannel LPCM, so you wouldn't hear it with either of those components.

Don't need to; I returned it and paid the extra for the 5400ES, which is in a class way above the 3400ES.

Anyone knows where to get 3400ES or Onkyo 606 with stock under 1k in Sydney? Both are ticketed above $1200 here.
