networkn Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 Hi There! I am very close to the purchase of a Mitsubishi HC6800 and I am trying to decide what screen to get. I have seen screens from $300-$9000 but really I am not sure what importance to place. I don't have a massive budget and would prefer > 80 but < 105 and prefer motorized from the bottom. I am not in a light controlled room, in fact, it's just a regular living room. I was offered this: http://www.rapalloav.co.nz/product/1344/Sc...ORISED-SCREENS/ for $2545 with a motor included. It's considerably outside my budget, but seems good value. (VUTEC 103" Diag 16x9 ) and the Screen Pro 100" as well for a more modest $850. Was also offered a Vmax2 Elite 100" screen for $1299. Assistance appreciated.
gf1966 Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 Im projecting a 90" image onto an off white painted wall with a 1080p epson and couldnt imagine a better picture. Personally Id save the $.

What you want is a surface that reflects equal amounts of RGB. We see in three primary colours and display divices are based on the human vision.

Then you've obviously not seen a good screen I've never quite understood how people can spend thousands of dollars on a great projector then cheap out on a screen (but each to their own i guess). Motorized are generally quite a bit more so you may find a fixed/retractable (get tab tensioned) better priced.
dan76n Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 Dont buy a screen until you have your projector set up. I bought a large piece of block out cloth and hung that up for a few weeks and played around with my image size until I got the size that "we" were both happy with. I ended up making a screen using blackout cloth as we are more than happy with the image it produces and the outlay was minimal. I got a few samples of screens and cant justify spending $800+ for what i can only see as minimal improvement. I would love to see a screen half blockout half screen fabric to get a better comparison. (like the HDMI vs composite JB does on tvs) One day I probably will buy a screen but Im still happy with my 115' home made job for around $100
quijibo Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 I was projecting on to a white painted wall and thought it looked great. Then I bought a dream screen off ebay, which was delivered for under $100 an the difference was massive. Not only was it brighter but the colour and overall picture improvement was just huge. They stll sell the 100" 4:3 dream screen on ebay for about $80+delivery. It is money well spent and far better than a wall.

The screen is going over a curtained window.

I'm doing the same thing, but the only reason I don't have a screen is because I'm renting, and I couldn't really make the change of installing one. I would, however, most definitely have one if it were MY house. As far as not being able to imagine better, home theatre is like that. Something will look or sound really great, and you'll wonder how it could possibly be bettered. Until it is. The comments people have made about the difference a good screen makes, I'd believe every word of it.

You could always use them 3M hangers to hang your screen and cleanly remove it once you have moved out.
PJ77 Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 These screens are good if you can find one for a reasonable price. It would be nice if they were 100", but I've become used to having only 80"! I got one from Grays Online a few months ago for $150.00. Good if you're renting, or in my case, have a wife who won't let you mount a permanent screen The difference between this and the wall is amazing (the wall loses btw!)
