DrP Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 ABC1 only available to HD viewers? I think someone somewhere has a screw loose. Assuming ABC had the desire there is no way the current government would allow it (think sure fire election loss) and the Libs wouldn't for the same reason.

Well I understand from the ratings that hardly anyone watches ABC1 so I cannot see it being a significant election issue and the younger generation are abandoning FTA TV in droves. However I guess you are right about the "fear" of losing elections over fairly trivial issues.
Rabbit3 Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 An interesting take on the schedule, I'm thinking Jeremy will take an afternoon/evening role on weekends rather than during the week, to help co-incide with his ABC News NSW reporting duties though. Also, The Drum I'm thinking will be another weekly program, as guests are often hard to come by. I did read somewhere that there would be a program dedicated to politics (but not Insiders) and I think that Tony Jones may play a role in this regard, even though he was absent from the ABC News 24 line-up list. Also I also believe that a weekend breakfast team will definitely be employed to tackle the likes of Sunrise and Today. But being a night owl I wonder what will happen after say 12am? Will they just have repeats or will there be live coverage of events, particularly the overseas financial markets. Keep in mind that this is entirely speculation...so I'd love to hear your thoughts. Jeremy will be on during the week. You can see in the above linked promo loop. It was also clear this would be the case as he had started doing weeknight evening updates, and Deborah Rice has replaced him on weekends (not sure if this is permanent though).
Timmy Downawell Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 Well, it was rumoured to be yesterday, now delayed... so now it's rumoured to be in the next two weeks.

I do find it funny how they spout quality, best of the best, and the final shot shows the team member on the right unable to sit down without falling This should be fun for mediawatch
Guest ka86 Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 OK I'll repeat what i said on another tv forum, given that promo reels are going to be running in all capital cities by the end of Friday I think that Wednesday launch is looking more and more likely. I can't see them showing that promo for too long otherwise people will start to get restless and the excitement of the channel will die a slow and painful death. The ABC have surely been leaking things to grab people's attention - first the logo, then the initial two promos on Monday night: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5c_ByP7voHE...feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkt4Z0J5Vds...feature=related And now tonight with the full length promo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sf8WVJcwxv8...player_embedded Loo at channels like GO! and SBS TWO which announced their channels pretty suddenly and launched them soon after, the ABC will want to make the launch as dramatic as possible and dragging the launch two weeks from now just won't cut it for viewers of ABC NEWS 24. All we can do is wait and see...

g12345567 Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 No more channel 20. ABC News 24 now broadcasting on channel 24. Had to do a rescan of the tvs and STB to pickup the change. Hope this doesn't cause too many problems like when 9 introduced go! and quite alot of people started complaining when they lost all the other channel 9 stations. At the moment they are showing the extended promo loop here in Sydney.

alanh Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 All, SD only STBs and receivers cannot receive this program. If you rescan the receiver you will find channel 20 disappears and channel 24 appears in its place. As predicted the channel 24 is 1280 x 720p with upscaled images. The demo loop contains images which include those from their studios. None of these images are of HD quality but are upconverted from mobile phones though to SD cameras. What a waste of HD. Since the ABC is determined to not use HD images, they would be better off transmitting channel 24 in SD and redistribute the spare data into its other programs. AlanH
jab_au Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 Demo loop is Broadcasting from Mount Nardi (Richmond/Tweed area)

Well, write to your local MP. It's the government forcing them to have an HD service: clearly the ABC would give it up completely given the chance.
bellotv Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 (edited) The demo loop contains no images including local studio images which are in HD. What a waste of HD. AlanH AlanH Please fix this up hey this isn't making much sense . I'm seeing images What are they ? Edited July 8, 2010 by bellotv

AlanH If one reviews your predictions the channel would be MPEG-4 AVC and transmitted as standard definition. Its not either. Further given that the channel is not 'live' yet, how can you possibly make any factual claims as to the definition of the content? What is shown in a demo loop can not be taken as proof of what the service will or won't be. IMO in all likelyhood the service will be upscaled SD, but until it commences no one on the outside, and that includes you, can state it as a fact. Is this another example of "Aurora V2 (VAST) is on air now" and "DBCDE says its on air now"? Edited July 8, 2010 by DrP
