Timmy Downawell Posted July 22, 2010 Posted July 22, 2010 edit: beaten. Glad to have the new channel live, look forward to never watching Seven's news again.
davmel Posted July 22, 2010 Posted July 22, 2010 The entire ABC digital multiplex just went off air in Melbourne.....
ckent Posted July 22, 2010 Posted July 22, 2010 I think the newsbar should be scrolling in classic news channel style. I don't. Scrolling is so 9/11/2001 … static is a much nicer minimal look. Yep Craig I noticed the MPEG artifacts too, but it seems so much better after midnight on repeat now, since ABC3 went to bed. CK.

Wing Nut Posted July 22, 2010 Posted July 22, 2010 IMHO they should have made ABC3 the News24 channel instead of kids programming all day on 3, and most of the day on 1 and 2. Surely one channel for kids is enough? TV is not a default babysitter for bogan parents. Should have left HD as it was. Why bother ABC.....fail! Quite right! I have to wonder at some complainants on the ABC website forum who whine loudly when for a short while one morning there were no ABC kiddie shows for their 4yo's to watch. When I've tried to watch ABC morning TV it was frequently showing kids' shows on all 3 channels - not to mention something equally kindie-like material on the commercial networks! Kid's shows aside, this 24 News at the expense of a 'regular' ABC HD channel fiasco has me beat! I'm wondering if Media Watch will touch on it sometime and enlighten us (we are paying for it after all!) as to why? No one else at the ABC has explained the profound logic in this apparent waste of bandwidth and alienation of SD-only viewers
davmel Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 No one else at the ABC has explained the profound logic in this apparent waste of bandwidth and alienation of SD-only viewers It's been explained many times but some people don't seem to listen Current legislation requires just over 1000 hours of HD broadcast by each network every year. That combined with the fact that the primary digital channel that is simulcast on analogue must be available in an SD version, means that if the ABC wants to have 4 channels like they have now, at least one of them MUST be in HD and it can't be ABC1 unless they have a simulcast of ABC1 in an SD version and a HD version which effectively means they only have 3 unique channels (which was the case up until ABC News started). The capacity of the digital multiplex means that broadcasters can only squeeze 2 SD and 1 HD channel at reasonable quality, or 3SD and 1HD like the ABC has done at noticeably less quality (and lower HD 720p resolution).
newtaste Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 Why the ABC needs both ABC2 and ABC3 showing kids programs on weekdays when only those under 5 are at home is baffling. To get ABC News 24 on to SD at least part-time, they should dump the weekday morning and early afternoon kids shows on ABC2 and show ABC News 24. And instead of showing NOTHING between 9:00pm and 6:00am on ABC3, show ABC News 24 instead.

Makes little sense other than wanting a better PQ when ABC barely do any HD at the moment. I think you'll find scholl aged kids (6-18) do record ABC3 and watch after school so that's why it's on. Considering there are another 10 FTA adult based channels, trying to knock off ABC3 is childish

Check out this ABC childrens guide. http://www.abc.net.au/children/shows/guide/ Why kids need three channels is beyond me. They should be combined into two during the day making ABC1, ABC2, ABCNews24, and ABCHD. No wonder kids are so unfit and over weight these days being plonked in front of the tele by incompetent parents. Does ABC stand for Australian Breeders Channel?
alanh Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 digitalj Fair enough, however you missed the bit that they can also digitise analog and then upconvert it. AlanH

Timmy Downawell Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 Well I have to say I am very disappointed with this channel. I thought I'd get an alternative to the trash on Seven/Nine at 6pm... but not only does ABC News 24 not have a 6pm news bulletin, it doesn't have one at 5pm or even 4pm... meaning I still have to wait until at least 7pm to watch a decent news (er, no offense to SBS). What's the point of a 24 hour news channel when you can't watch a packaged news bulletin when you want to? I thought we'd get something like BBC World, with news bulletins on the hour and other content on the half hour.
azure1503559508 Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 (edited) It may be a problem with my STB although I just went to check out ABC 24 and it has the same program as ABC2 on; Heartland. The EPG states that "Australia Story" should be on.. Edited July 24, 2010 by azure

Have you done a rescan?? also have you got a HD box or SD ABC 24 is on HD so a SD set top box will not pick it up
DaveS1503559522 Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 The online stream http://www.abc.net.au/news/abcnews24/ is currently showing ABC2 (minus the watermark)

I agree, I was under the impression that it was going to live up to its name and be a "24 hour news channel". They really are not offering any competition to Foxtel's news services. Too many "Stateline" type programs and not enough news!
DrP Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 Not enough 'news' ? Today: 0000-0004 ABC News Update 0100-0102 ABC News Update 0500-0503 ABC News Update 0600-0603 ABC News Update 0700-0730 ABC News 0800-0830 ABC News 0830-0832 ABC News Update 0900-0901 ABC News Update 1001-0132 ABC News 1100-1130 ABC News 1130-1132 ABC News Update 1200-1232 ABC News 1302-1304 ABC News Update 1400-1402 ABC News Update 1500-1531 ABC News 1600-1630 ABC News 1630-1632 ABC News Update 1930-1933 ABC News Update 2300-2330 ABC News There'd be even more 'ABC News' but for election items today. Between the ABC News programming there are various current affairs and even foreign news programming. Foxtel's news services BBC, Sky etc are not continuous news either. They too have current affairs etc programming. All in all ABC News 24 seems to be a fair mix to me.
Timmy Downawell Posted July 25, 2010 Posted July 25, 2010 Not enough 'news' ? You can't count those sub-4 minute headline updates! Anyway I was referring to week days where there is a dearth of packaged bulletins after the 1pm news. "Afternoon Live" seems to be a continuous rolling news programme that goes on long in-depth tangents with occasional headline updates. So after that 1pm news you have to wait until 7pm for another proper bulletin. They should have at least a 3pm and 5pm half hour bulletin IMHO.
DrP Posted July 25, 2010 Posted July 25, 2010 Afternoon live: Tracks the news of the day with discussion, interviews, news updates and breaking news and the latest on federal politics from Canberra and business, finance and the markets.
Timmy Downawell Posted July 25, 2010 Posted July 25, 2010 As I said, after that 1pm news you have to wait until 7pm for another proper bulletin
djOS Posted July 25, 2010 Posted July 25, 2010 As I said, after that 1pm news you have to wait until 7pm for another proper bulletin It would be nice if they had more frequent news bulletins but regardless im enjoying having abc24
