I usually buy one album at a time and take a week or so to digest and decide if I like it, but I've aquired around 25 new albums in the last two months, and it is really quite stressful! I know excatly what you mean - Ive been buying collections off Tardme but its now at the stage where I have so much to listen too I really dont know where to begin. Hasn't stopped me selectively bidding for a few more though but this time one at a time.

NOT qualified whether I enjoyed the listen or not!

11thNAMR Posted August 8, 2009 Posted August 8, 2009 Here is a great female voice & a cracking album that I listened to last night & again tonight- its that good! Nora Jones should give up now & wait tables- she cannot compete with true talent like Neko Case. Neko Case's 2006 Album "Fox Confessor Brings The Flood" Stand out tracks include the opening number 'Margaret vs. Pauline', 'Hold on Hold On' & the final track 'The Needle has landed'- there isnt a weak track on the album. Recording is good- but lots of tape hiss- inexcusable with today's technology or even with properly set-up quality analog recording gear. Review from Allmusic below: Neko Case hasn't had much need to prove her credentials as a major artist since making her solo debut with 1997's The Virginian, but she's been refining her skills in the recording studio on each subsequent release, and with 2006's Fox Confessor Brings the Flood she's fashioned an album that can cautiously be called a masterpiece. As always, Case's voice, an instrument of impressive strength, grace, and expressive power, is the star of this show, and she's never sounded better than she does here, but what sets this apart from her other fine work is her growth as a songwriter and producer. Case wrote or co-wrote all 12 tracks on Fox Confessor Brings the Flood, and her tales of failed friendship, faith stretched to the breaking point, and love that causes as much ache as comfort are subtle and expressionistic but deeply evocative, conjuring images and feelings that linger long after the album has ended, especially the spectral "Star Witness," the moody yet romantic "That Teenage Feeling" and "Hold on, Hold On," and the darkly beautiful closer, "The Needle Has Landed." And Case and her co-producer, Darryl Neudorf, have assembled a superb cast of musicians to accompany these songs, among them members of the Sadies and Calexico as well as Garth Hudson of the Band, Howe Gelb from Giant Sand, and Kelly Hogan. Together they've sculpted a dozen elegant sonic landscapes that are beautiful and richly detailed while meshing with the moody textures of the songs in their open space and unwillingness to crowd either the singer or the other players. The cumulative effect mirrors both the beauty and the sadness that lurks within the human heart, and Fox Confessor Brings the Flood is a rich, mature, and deeply satisfying piece of music that deserves and demands attention — if this isn't Album of the Year material, it's hard to say what is.

11thNAMR Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 Did some more listening last night as wife at her Mums :-) Alan Parson Project "Tales of Mystery & Imagination" (remastered Version on LP- leaves the CD for dead) Art-rock rubbish, however a record of my youth & so remains a fav. Sam Cooke- "The Man & His Music" -(LP) only 2 words can adequately describe this double album- spell binding! Los Lobos "Just Another Band from East LA" (CD Disc 1) - not a weak track- wide range of genres - folk, ethnic & contemporary music- indispensable! Slipknot "All Hope Has Gone"-(CD) Corey Taylor can actually sing (when he wants to but hasn't the talent to polish Sam Cooke's shoes) great album none the less- don't listen to if depressed as will send you over the edge. If they dropped the macho BS these guys could be the next 'super group' (dont see it happening though).
NeilNZ Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 I listened to a lot of stuff this morning, half of which I can't remember. But I was listening to it all on the fantastic Living Voice OBX RW speakers with some nice Kondo cables!! Very Nice!! A bit of Lisa Ekdahl, some Buena Vista Social Club, some other cool stuff...
bizzar Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 Ambrosia - A progressive rock band from the States, all vinyl of course, circa 1970's. - Life Beyond LA. - One Eighty. - Somewhere I never Travelled. Cheers.
11thNAMR Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 Lisa Ekdahl is one beautiful looking woman- voice is bit light & lacks power being a little girly, but who cares when you look THAT good! (I assume you are listening to her album 'Back to Earth' which is her best recording) Buena Vista Social Club- timeless music crafted by people with talent oozing out of them. Its so sad that only 1 prime singer on the album is still alive (Omara). This album is a gem and should be in everyone's collection.
NeilNZ Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 Indeed! BVSC was on vinyl, so it was even more fun. Also Rod y Gab on vinyl too... Lisa Ekdahl is a hottie!
