StephenSLR Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 (edited) It's a confusing mess of information. I have a Sony TV from the early 90's - still has a magnificent picture. I was told was to make sure the STB was a HD one so I could pick up HD channels - this was prior to 7TWO, back when 7 and 7HD ran different content. I gave that advice to everyone I knew as well. There were both SD and HD STB's available at the time and thank god for this forum which I used to question what the difference was. I can assure you, get a HD STB and you can watch all the HD & SD channels on any TV ..... Edit: Any TV that has AV inputs, that is. I also use a Y connector for audio so that both L&R go into the one mono input on the Sony. s Edited December 29, 2010 by StephenSLR
GregA1503560021 Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 (edited) At Xmas, my folks were still under the impression their 15-year-old Sony CRT wasn't able to play HD DTV content using an HD set top box. It's a confusing mess of information. Unfortunately, the reason it's confusing is because technically it's correct... but people don't understand what question they're asking ie: Q: can my old CRT show HD? A: No, it can't. but.. Q: can my old CRT show the new channels that are on HD? A: Yes, just get an HD STB. It will convert them to SD which your CRT can show. Edited December 29, 2010 by GregA
Robert E Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 It's official!Southern Cross Ten will launch Eleven in the aggregated markets of Queensland, NSW, Victoria and the ACT simultaneously with metro TEN on 11 January 2011. No word on Tasmania. Link to Media Release: http://www.asx.com.au/asxpdf/20101213/pdf/31vk92jx82wx4d.pdf Why would you expect Southern Cross Ten to mention Tasmania in their media release?
johndee Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 Why would you expect Southern Cross Ten to mention Tasmania in their media release? Where's Tasmania? Is it the same as Van Dieman's Land? At least the Victorians know where it is (And the sailing fraternity).
miata Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 You don't need to have an HD box to watch as its available on SD as well for those with older tvs just need to buy an SD box. No, it's no longer available in SD, so the only way is with an HD box, they're available for as little as $44. (Saw an ad last night)
ckent Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 No, it's no longer available in SD, so the only way is with an HD box, they're available for as little as $44. (Saw an ad last night) Geezus. Plus I'm driving around South Australia and seeing all the posters telling people the analogue TV signals switched off a couple of weeks ago. Let's hope that when 2013 rolls around, they can switch their "main" channels into HD without fear of losing viewers. CK.
DrP Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 (edited) Only if all a lot those viewers with SD only equipment decide to ditch it by 2013, otherwise expect the 'main' channel to remain the primary SD service. Edited December 31, 2010 by DrP
digitalj Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 less than 2 weeks from starting and I'm yet to see any changes on SC10, SC10 is still 6.2Mbps and ONE HD still 14.95Mbps
DrP Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 You may well see changes come into being next week. No doubt all the behind the scenes work has been done and all that is required is reconfiguration to distribute the program streams to muxers for each transmission region. If SC really wanted to it could take it right down to the wire and make configuration changes only minutes before the service goes 'live', but I imagine the changes will be present for a week or so before Eleven goes live in order to give people time to notice the ads telling them to rescan their receiver if they can't see the promo loop on Eleven.

Adrian90 Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 (edited) Here is an guide for (Melbourne) for next week. Looks like a channel full of old sitcoms..11 Guide Just like GO!. Californication will be the only thing to look forward to on Eleven Edited January 5, 2011 by Adrian90
StephenSLR Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 Californication will be the only thing to look forward to on Eleven ...and Dexter, eventually. So many ex ch. 9 programs in that list. Just like the other secondary channels - so many old sitcoms that weren't even that good back in the day. s
Slattery Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 And ONE HD's bitrate slowly declines even futher....
Adrian90 Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 Just like the other secondary channels - so many old sitcoms that weren't even that good back in the day. I thought Eleven was supposed to be "Distinctively Youthfull". I'm only 20 and shows like Happy Days, Jag and Macgyver aren't from our generation, older people may disagree but we didn't grow up with any of it.
StephenSLR Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 I thought Eleven was supposed to be "Distinctively Youthfull". Nope that is supposed to be GO!'s territory. Nice job with Here's Lucy, Bewitched, etc. s

solitaire Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 It wouldn't matter what the program lineup was, it would be impossible to please everyone. At least now there are so many channels that if you sift through them, and if necessary employ the use of a recording device, there is generally something for every age group and taste. Having said that...a documentary channel would be very welcome!
StephenSLR Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 in the summer break before ratings restart you can expect old shows I've never understood ratings season, we watch TV in summer as well, not all of us go overseas and why the need to put on crap for the poor or less mobile? Do they realise if one channel puts on some good shows during summer they will get all the audience and advertising $ so why doesn't one of them take the initiative and strive ahead to gain market share? s
