IanD1503559705 Posted August 13, 2011 Posted August 13, 2011 (edited) Cheers, it's a shame I cant just plug my Xbox360 HD-DVD drive directly into my 83 or into a 93 (i'd buy one today if I could do that) to play my 80+ HD-DVD movies. There will always be a need for a separate HD-DVD player: it's impractical to convert a complete HD-DVD title (including menus, extras, PIP features, etc) into an equivalent Bluray. It is possible to readily convert the main HD-DVD feature into a format that will play on an Oppo and it is possible to convert all titles in an HD-DVD into a Bluray format with simple menus (with a lot more effort), but there are some gotchas and hurdles to overcome in the process and at this stage I'm not sure anyone has mastered authoring a PIP feature from HD-DVD (eg Harry Potter Goblet Of Fire IIRC) to Bluray yet. Hopefully when the Oppo fully supports HD audio and PGS subtitles in mkv, then mkv could become a useful container. At the moment it is possible to readily convert an HD-DVD main feature into an mkv with multichannel LPCM and chapter support. Edited August 13, 2011 by IanD
IanD1503559705 Posted August 13, 2011 Posted August 13, 2011 Other night so many handshakes/screen flashes/audio dropouts that kids gave up tryinto watch a movie. For non-demanding visual quality (eg kids) you could feed component from the Oppo to the TV: this should have no handshaking issues and should be close to HDMI quality.

LordPanda Posted August 14, 2011 Posted August 14, 2011 Hey chaps/chapettes, hoping for some insight here. Can't seem to get the oppo-93 pro-kit from bluraychip.dk to work on my oppo-93. The oppo doesn't power on (no red standby light) whenever the kit is installed. I've followed the instructions religiously and have checked the connections many times. I've made sure the USB dongle on the board is secure as well. Contacted Casper from bluraychip.dk but that bloke hasn't replied to me since my first email a week ago ... The installation isn't rocket-science so I'm at a loss at where I've gone wrong. Anyway I've included a couple of screenies of the innards and hopefully you guys can point out where I've gone wrong. http://imageshack.us/f/847/20110813202438.jpg/ http://imageshack.us/f/59/20110813202452.jpg/ Thanks in advance

Not sure if this is a minor spec change, an artifact of the photos, or potentially that they're not fully seated. Presume it still fires up with the kit removed. If so, and the ribbon cable is fully seated, then it sounds like the kit is faulty.
Anden Posted August 14, 2011 Posted August 14, 2011 I'll state the obvious and pls don't misinterperet why or what i say as it would only be the next logical thing to do, imo. Your in Canberra, if all else has failed, can you make a bit of time to pop into Merlin and have a word to Ken, surely he'll be able to sort it for you .
alf56 Posted August 14, 2011 Posted August 14, 2011 Is it just me or are others noticing HDMI hamdshake issues since last FW upgrade. It seems to take much longer to get to home screen than it used to. Hanshakes at movie start up are more noticeable. Other night so many handshakes/screen flashes/audio dropouts that kids gave up tryinto watch a movie. Also recently ripped some old HD-DVD's to BD format. Place the rips into an AVCHD folder and in essence they don't work when played over HDMI direct to TV and HDMI 2 to AVR. However they work fine when just viewed over HDMI2. Double checked and this is definitetly an HDMI handshake issue. blairy Hi blairy,i dont know if you caught my posts over on the AVS forum but ever since updating to the latest firmware i to have been having handshake issues, screen would go white with multi coloured speckles 3 or 4 times while loading a blu-ray,i had my bd-p93 hooked up hdmi 1 to yamaha rx-v665 av receiver video pass through to samsung la40b650 tv since i first set up my oppo with no problems at all, after contacting oppodigital 3 times and being told 3 times that this was normal with the new firmware i decided to hook up my oppo, hdmi 1 direct to tv this completely solved my hand shake issues so i then hooked up hdmi 2 to the receiver for audio and every thing is working fine. From this i concluded that the oppo was having hand shaking issues with my av receiver and over on the AVS forum some other bd-p93 owners also seemed to be having problems with their amps and projectors not hand shaking properly, although it sounds like the only way you`ll clear up your problems (seeing as you are already hooked up hdmi 1 to display and hdmi 2 to amp) is hope oppo put out a new firmware sooner rather than later. regards Adrian

I recently fitted up the pro bluraychip.dk region free kit and and the BPD-93 won't power up. Only have the dimmest of glows on the red standby light when mains is applied to the player, but it is easy to miss that it's on at all. Checked all the connections here, even tested the ribbon and wires for continuity with no problems found. As you mention it's a fairly straight forward install and I've been over my installation in a lot of detail and it's looking like the region free kit itself may be faulty. I've also emailed bluraychip but only this weekend so no response yet. As soon as the mod kit is unplugged the BDP-93 powers up and works as normal (thankfully - was a few nervous moments there!!).

sero Posted August 14, 2011 Posted August 14, 2011 I also ordered the pro kit from gatti and installed it today. I made sure everything was connected properly and followed all the instuctions provided. I can turn on the oppo via the remote with button 1, 2 or 3 so im pretty sure its changing regions for bluray (cant confirm though because all my blu rays are region free so far). But i still get the wrong region code when i put in dvds. Does this mean the mod chip is faulty or am i doing something wrong. I tryed putting in different dvds and i read about the memory recall feature but i cant put the dvd in and press Stop twice because it doenst even load it just says wrong region. I will also email gatti to see if he knows whats going on. Does anyone on here have any tips i can try? Thanks

If Casper hasn't replied in a couple of days, I'll ask Ken if he can test the pro kit for me I should have listen to some posters here and bought the kit from Gatti or elsewhere instead of bluraychip.dk ... Would you kindly do the same?

Press 1,2 or 3 on the remote control, and theregionfree kit will power up the player, and set the DVD region to 0, and the bluray to A,B or C. I'm assuming you powered it up via pressing 1,2 or 3 and set the dvd region to 0?

I just got the oppo last week updated to the newest firmware and installed the pro mod chip today. No i havn't tryed updating the pro kit firmware yet. I also noticed when i power on using 1 , 2 or 3 it starts up and then locks up and the oppo becomes unresponsive the remote control does nothing and pressing buttons on the player does nothing except when i try to turn it off. Then if i turn on with the remote with the normal power button it works fine? Very strange.. Where in settings can you set dvd region to 0 ?

If so, possibly just the resume function. When the kit is working properly it defaults to region 0 - there's no need to do anything for DVD regions. If you want to load the pro-kit firmware 1.0g you can download it here. Note in the instructions the need to use the front USB port and have your USB stick formatted to FAT or FAT32, not NTFS. Note: my 95 was locked to region A (didn't try DVD) after updating the Oppo firmware until I loaded the pro-kit firmware update. Edited August 14, 2011 by Quark

LordPanda Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 Still no reply from Casper from bluraychips.dk ... pretty frustrating to be honest. The guy seems adverse to customer support/service. Anyway also contacted Ken here in Canberra but he succinctly said he couldn't help; don't blame him since it isn't his problem. At least he replied quickly Anyway ... not quite sure where to go from here. I'll give Casper another couple of days before I call the bank I suppose ... sigh.
aHorseofCourse Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 Beta BDP9x-53-0805B Firmware Released. Adds support for YouTube, apparently. Who wants to be the guinea pig and see if it affects the rear USB port with the mod chip? Will we need a new firmware upgrade for the Pro Kit as well?

aHorseofCourse Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 After the "joys" of the last episode, I'll pass for now. But it's your turn - I jumped in after the last update:-) I do find it incredibly hard NOT to install new updates, so there's a slight chance I'll ignore all sense and reason and give it a go. After all, the last firmware update for the chip was supposed to offer improved compatibility with Oppo updates. . .

I returned mine in the mail - am hoping for a replacement to arrive, but I emphasise the 'HOPE' aspect. I am assuming (hoping?) that my package is in the Australia post backlog pile, waiting to be distributed. I am also thinking that I might start believing in the Easter Bunny soon. If nothing arrives soon, I expect I will put it down to experience, I might give the bank a call and I expect I will contact a local supplier to do the local instal. Disappointing, but worse things happen at sea! Benje
