But it's your turn - I jumped in after the last update:-)

I do find it incredibly hard NOT to install new updates, so there's a slight chance I'll ignore all sense and reason and give it a go. After all, the last firmware update for the chip was supposed to offer improved compatibility with Oppo updates. . .

Hey, I had the pleasure of being one of the first to have the earlier beta firmware defeat the region free mod, have Ken at Merlin diagnose it, then installing the 1.0f pro-kit firmware, then 1.0g. Then had the stereo outputs refuse to handle SACD until a full power off fixed that glitch. Now letting others be the early adopters.

Where's the sense of adventure!

I returned mine in the mail - am hoping for a replacement to arrive, but I emphasise the 'HOPE' aspect.

Haha, HOPE isn't enough to unlock region-locked blu-rays

All quiet here regarding communications from Bluraychip.dk. Another person I know with a BDP-83 is a bit surprised at the lack of comms from them as he had to previously contact them about an issue (with a particular bluray disk - the mod chip was OK) and said they were quite responsive, so we're wondering why things have changed? Perhaps Casper has gone on holidays?

Huzzah!!!

Casper is not in the office, and I do apologize on his behalf that you have not received an answer to your e-mails.

If the kit is faulty you can of course have a refund, or we can ship a replacement out today.

Please let us know what you prefer.

Please return the faulty kit to us, when you have received the replacement or refund.

You can return it to:

Tridane Aps

Please ship with standard airmail, we will cover the shipping expenses to your creditcard.

Looks like your were right (or close enough) Grems :)

Hey, nice work there!! How did you manage to get a response from them, did you email again? Looks like this now has the potential to end well. I just hope they haven't got a faulty batch of kits as it appears our kits were sent around the same time and seem to have the same problem.

Yeah I emailed this afternoon and I essentially told Casper that I'd do a chargeback if I didn't hear from him by the end of the week. And then later this evening got the reply from Rikke who seems pretty nice.

FYI, I asked about expedited shipping of the replacement kit and here was the reply:

Unfortunately, we do not have a faster shipping to Australia, as the cheapest shipping option with UPS, Fedex and DHL is more than the price of the kit itself.

However, I will check with Gatti and some other distributors in Australia, if he have stock of our mods to spare. If not, I will ship it out today with normal airmail.

Anyway fingers crossed for both you and me that things get resolved.

Thanks for the tip regarding Rikke, I have been in contact with him and worked through a few things and now have a work around in place that has got the kit working. There were a couple of issues one of which required some minor soldering to resolve. I should have sent the kit back for this issue, however as I used to work in electronic servicing and had the required equipment here I was able to repair the issue and the kit then came to life but revealed a secondary problem that I was then given a work around for. So, it's all looking good, just waiting for some further advice on the final fix. Now that the communications channels have been opened up with bluraychip.dk they have been extremely helpful in getting me up and running.

That's good to hear mate. Curious ... what was wrong with your kit?

There was a problem with the soldering on 3 of the pins on the ribbon cable connectors on the board of the kit. It all looked good to the eye, but tested open circuit when checking for continuity. After tidying those problem joints up the kit powered straight up but the Oppo then had problems hanging on the "Hello" screen similar to what sero reported here on page 32. This secondary issue seemed to be caused by a data corruption issue on the board due to the multiple failed boot attempts with the fault condition on the board and needed some new files to be written to the kit. It was a fair bit of mucking around and it would have been far simpler to have just gone with the replacement kit, but with the helpful assistance from Rikke it provided me with some entertainment for a few hours so was all good, especially getting a favorable outcome.

Basic Kit:

By default, your bluray player is region free for DVD. To set the bluray region to A, B or C, please do the following:

1. Power on the player without any disc inserted. The screen will after a while show “No Disc”.

2. About 4 seconds after the “No Disc” displayed, press DIMMER, DIMMER, DIMMER, MUTE and then the region code. 1 for A, 2 for B, and 3 for C.

3. Power off your player. When started up again, the regioncode has changed.

Selecting the region code on the remote, must be done within 20 seconds.

Pro Kit

By default, your bluray player is now region free for DVD. To set the bluray region to A, B or C, please press “1”, “2” or “3” on the remote when the player is in standby. The player will automatically power on, when “1”, “2” or “3” is pressed. The selected region will be stored and remembered, even when removing the mains supply from the player.

To disable the automatic power on, press the blue button on the remote once.

To enable automatic power on again, press the yellow button once.

Ahoy!

Received the replacement kit on Friday and it works as it should. Huzzah.

Moral of the story? If you try and you don't succeed, then keep trying and trying until a creeping realisation dawns that it might not be you this time! :D

Hey I have a modded oppo 93 from the group buy. Yesterday I went to play a region B "Unstoppable" after selecting "2" on the remote & it kept saying the player is region 1.

How can this be? Instructions I got with the player says "1" for region A, "2" for B & "3" for C. Had the player since April but I can't quite remember if I played any region B discs before.

Most of my disks are either A or region free. Its running the July 13 official firmware. The region free mod cannot be affected by updating the firmware right?

Any ideas guys?

If you have the pro kit then it was affected by Oppo's recent firmware upgrades. Install the pro kit firmware update available here - download includes instructions.

If you have something connected to the rear usb port, remove it and try the region change.

Just an idea but are you turning the player on using the 2 button for region B playback,or as someone else said if you updated the Oppo firmware you might need to update the firmware on the region free mod.

As advised by other post it is definitely the firmware in the pro mod needs updating.

The firmware upgrade worked. Thanks mate. Will future player firmware affect the region free mod?

I haven't heard of any further issues with the 15 Aug beta firmware, so sounds like it is a maybe, rather than a certainty.
