blybo Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 anybody streaming from a Mac with their Oppo 93? I've only ever used a ATV, which is in the family room and childs play to work but this whole dnla server stuff is giving me the hebee jebees. Totally foreign to me. We have a 20" iMac running snow leopard. I've downloaded Plex but will have another crack at it tonight if I have time before I come grovelling back here to ask the hows and whys... . Navigation seems sort of counter intuitive.

But the pick of OS X DLNA servers (by far the most "Mac-like") is Playback: http://www.yazsoft.com/products/playback/ Trust me, I've tried just about every OS X DLNA server known to man on both my PS3 and Oppo, and Playback is where it's at. It'll stream iTunes playlists, iPhoto albums and everything else you need.

I don't get much time mid week with 2 young'ens to spend playing around with things. Last night I had about 20 minutes and Plex was driving me batty as it wasn't even showing the menus the help videos showed. Thankful of another option. Hoping Gattiweb have their mod kits in soon, not seeing the video potential of the oppo is driving me crazy and I hate using the PS3 for playing movies, very clunky UI for that sort of thing which has made SWMBO slightly scared of the system... Hopefully a pretty standard player will make things less intimidating.

If you're really desperate you could: A) try some of your blurays - you'll be surprised how many are region free even though they say Region B on the packaging. Rip the BD to a HD or large USB stick and play back from that source. Provided you rip lossless you'll get the full BD experience That smiley is meant to B with a ) next to it Regards blairy Edited October 5, 2011 by blairy

Bit disappointed with the multi channel out sound... or maybe it was just the actual mix. The pod race in Episode 1 didn't have the big bangs I remembered from the DVD. Went looking for set up menus to tweak channel volume levels and noted that Audessey (sp?) had my sub at -3.5db whereas the oppo had everything defaulted to 0 gain. It should have been too loud then? My amp appears to not use any room eq when multi channel out is being used so relies only on whats on the disc. It's a Denon AVR 4306.
flixyflox Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 (edited) I have just noticed an anachronism in playback on the 93 which I think only began after the "-07" firmware and persists wth the current firmware. The issue is this: Formerly when playing back (from HDMI 1 output) MKV files of titles in Scope ratio (or in fact anything wider than 1.78:1) I only needed to cycle the AR button to "uload" to display the image pixel for pixel, without aspect ratio distortion. Anyway, after installing the last two firmwares (and the FW Region FRee restore upgrade to the Danish mod chip) it became impossible to use uload to allow pixel for pixel and the wider than 1.78 MKV images were distorted. The other day I tried switching the output to HDMI 2 and - lo and behold - I was able to use "uload" again correctly to display the MKV titles in question. BUt HDMI 1 output continues to apparently not allow the uload option. Has anyone else encountered this? Should I contact Oppo? Edited October 10, 2011 by flixyflox

I'll view a few more movies before getting too concerned. Hopefully I'll have my DIY (ver 1.0 ) scope screen on the wall tonight. I'm suspecting either my subs rear controls have been played with or the scene which pricked my concerns is just mixed weirdly. I might take my disc to a store demo and see how it sounds through a avr with HD decoders and running a decent sub. Thinking an upgrade of sub could be on the cards anyway... when funds allow.

I think there is confusion here as many believe you are speaking of the analogues as that is how most use the term multi-channel. Best to use term player decoding to LPCM over HDMI as that is a more accurate description as you are not using the SPIDF/Digital connection either which you can with LPCM conversion.

I need to get the region free mod for my Oppo done and open boxes from our recent house move to find the dvd before a back to back comparison can be done... Thanks all for the feedback

Felix.. Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 (edited) I had problems getting my original mod kit to work from bluraychip.dk. However the proprietor sent me a replacement which arrived today and I'm pleased to report that this replacement worked just fine. Thanks to Benje for his tip on contacting Casper. They sent me the replacement straight away without requiring the return of the faulty kit first. So I can thoroughly recommend modchip purchases from bluraychip.dk. Edited October 12, 2011 by Felix.

Getting quotes currently for custom cabinetry for the HT room. On another 93 subject, anybody connect a keyboard to their Oppo for you tube searching etc? I've now got a spare wireless desktop keyboard floating our office and wondered if you simply plug dongle into the usb port? Also, Gattiweb have their new shipment in so I'm going to try and get there this arvo to get the mod done.

You tube is almost useless without tbh. Any usb keyboard or mouse I've ever used needs software or at least windows drivers. You can't get that with the oppo. Mind you, I can't see it doing any harm to try. blairy
CAVX Posted October 13, 2011 Posted October 13, 2011 I got to test a 93 out today in my own system. All I want to say is WOW I want one!

bbar Posted October 14, 2011 Posted October 14, 2011 Does that include the mod chip? No but they are cheap from Gatti and easy to install
blybo Posted October 14, 2011 Posted October 14, 2011 (edited) I got mine (pro edition) modded by Gatti yesterday and got a heat-sink as well for $190. He just got a new delivery of chips. Heat sink might not be necessary but mine will be operating in a cabinet which is opened backed into a storage room under the stairs. Seems weird they don't use a ventilated box or a cooling fan. Probably why they whacked a fan on the 95 with subsequent release. The pro mod is not a cheap thing indeed but worth it for easy of use in my opinion
blybo Posted October 14, 2011 Posted October 14, 2011 Watched our first DVD on the newly modded oppo last night. Also first movie with the scope screen installed... Oppo 93... . Amazing job of upscaling DVD to 1080p. Yet to understand the physics of how a 720p native projector's image can look very disappointing (admittedly to 130" scope size) showing a DVD upscaled to 720p. I was always told to use the native resolution but the improvement was awesome showing the same dvd at 1080p . Wish there was a way to route our fta viewing through the video chip in the Oppo. I'm sure the beyonwiz won't up-scale that well, we are currently use an old Phillips HD stb.
