Watched our first DVD on the newly modded oppo last night. Also first movie with the scope screen installed...

Oppo 93... . Amazing job of upscaling DVD to 1080p. Yet to understand the physics of how a 720p native projector's image can look very disappointing (admittedly to 130" scope size) showing a DVD upscaled to 720p. I was always told to use the native resolution but the improvement was awesome showing the same dvd at 1080p  . Wish there was a way to route our fta viewing through the video chip in the Oppo. I'm sure the beyonwiz won't up-scale that well, we are currently use an old Phillips HD stb.

Are you able to watch the same DVD from the Oppo on another TV (as opposed to projector). Try the same upscaling/resolution settings and see if the problem repeats.

Not easily and really why bother? The results aren't a problem, in fact we're rapt. Just confused as to why the lower yet native (to the projector) resolution looked so poor in comparison. Just re read my initial post and could how it could be confusing. We got awesome results upscaling to 1080p through the 720p projector.

Does that include the mod chip?

Unfortunately no.

You can get a basic mod chip for $75, where you have to press a particular key sequence and then reboot the Oppo to get the new region code locked in, or a more advanced mod chip for $169 (where you press a remote key to boot the Oppo with the desired region).

The advanced mod chip is supposed to be firmware upgradable for future additional features, but it seems like Oppo firmware updates often require a firmware update to the mod chip too.

If you already have an Aussie Bluray player, forget about the mod chip for the Oppo and use it for Region B locked titles: play Region A and Region All titles on the stock Oppo.

There is a downloadable file that will make the Oppo region free for DVD.

Alternatively, the Oppo will play Bluray iso from a connected drive (eSATA or USB), so if you rip a Region B title to iso removing the region code, the stock Oppo effectively becomes region free.

It seems to be a common experience that 720p displays tend to look better with 1080p input. I think this is because 720p displays are usually 1360x768 and this means even 720p content must be scaled, but by a small amount: algorithmically, downscaling 1080p to 768p may be easier to do without artifacting.

My TV doesn't scale SDTV material that well, which is why I use a DVDO Edge VP to upscale my PVR output to 1080p and it looks so much better. Yes, it would be good if you could use the Oppo VP to upscale DTV material, but since it is not easy to do, the only other alternative is an external VP. Perhaps the next Oppo should incorporate video inputs to make use of the inbuilt VP.

The Oppo 83 was said to be slightly better scaling DVD than the Oppo 93 (83 uses ABT2010 and 93 uses Qdeo). The DVDO Edge uses the same ABT2010 (or its successor ABT2015) as the Oppo 83, but they are more difficult to obtain now and still reasonably expensive.

Just to confirm (for me) it wont do this via DNLA/network though?

AFAIK, the Oppo will only play ISO via eSATA/USB connected drives. There is a 2TB drive limit, but some USB hubs will permit multiple drives to be connected.

I like the dock approach that makes the HDD like a cartridge and gives effectively unlimited capacity plus minimises power usage.

If your lucky. I burnt 4 cdr's in different profiles and still got no joy... maybe it is dependent on the firmware it ships with. Actually I think I upgraded to current FW before loading the cdrs so maybe not compatible with that FW.

The file download is an iso: use Imgburn to burn the iso as an image and it takes care of the profile. Worked for me, although that was with earlier firmware. The player loads and rejects the disc almost immediately, so it doesn't look like it has done anything.

I confirm that Ian. I bought a 93 for a friend in June and used the "83 super disk iso" (burning with ImgBurn and successfully made his 93 region free for dvd. I used the same disc on my own a few minutes ago (lazy I guess) and instead of going through its paces - it just spat the disc out. Obviously it doesn't like the new firmware. :(

It isn't a biggie for me as I have a number of other players but I don't want to necessarily have to switch players for dvd in case I find out that I cannot play the disc...

IIRC, the superdisk gets spat out of the player almost immediately it is inserted, when it does work.

I'm assuming you checked region free capability after trying the superdisk to confirm whether it worked.

A real bummer if it no longer works with the latest firmware.

I had thought that the superdisk was retained across firmware updates: maybe it still is if installed prior to the latest firmware updates.

Now you have me worried about updating my Oppo 93 to the latest firmware, in case I lose DVD region free capability.

Okay, my Oppo 93 had the superdisk installed some time back: I upgraded to the previous 707b firmware a while ago and DVD region free capability was still operational. Decided today to risk upgrading to the latest 907 firmware. Played a known Region 2/4 DVD beforehand, no problem, upgraded to 907 firmware and played the same DVD, still no problem.

Therefore, I can confidently say that the superdisk is retained across firmware updates and still works with the latest 907 firmware.

What I am unable to test is whether upgrading to the latest firmware and then attempting a virgin superdisk install will also work, which I think is the gist of the current issue.

Thanks for posting back Ian.

I feel like such a doofus. I must have not waited until the Oppo had shut down and interrupted it by slotting the dvd in to test. Obviously it must need to cycle down because I just tried the R4 disc and it worked perfectly! So as you said the firmware version didn't make any difference at all.

The combination of the quick spitting out of the disc and not seeming to do anything to the player at all making me assume it didn't workl - (and not letting it power down) gave a false result. :(

Anyway all is good and I can say the superdisk does work on a virgin player with the very latest firmware. :)

It's happened once - hardly often.

Well good to know it still works even though I have the mod now. I'm sure I burnt the iso as an image but meh...

Loving the machine and now have streaming from our iMac working too. Still think a Apple TV2 is a better streaming option with prettier GUI and screensavers. Might have to sneak a second one into the HT but my amps out of HDMI in ports... Might have to downgrade the PS3's connection to component/optical.

Just wondering if someone can help solve a problem I'm having getting my oppo to recognize my NTSF external hard. When I plug it in it recognizes it as USB in but then I get a no disc message. It seems to be able to read my FAT 32 formatted HD fine. Does oppo regonize NTFS a formatted hard drives ?

Many thanks

Hi,

Forgive my ignorance (I searched this thread and couldn't find it) but can you skip straight to the top menu using the oppo?

Cheers,

Simon

On start up or from playing a disc? I can't remember off hand if I've tried whilst playing a disc but I'd assume yes you can. This reminds me the top menu no longer has the set up menu in it (on latest firmware) so I must make a few alterations to my harmony remote.

Yes, Oppo recognises NTFS formatted HDD up to 2TB, but sometimes it takes a while for a HDD to come up once connected as it indexes the contents. You know when it has worked, because it takes you to the main page where you can select Movies, Music, Netflix etc.

Hi and thanks for your information , I thought that might be the case so I attempted to leave leave the HD in for half an hour but it still didn't initiate the main index page . Is it possible there is a reset button or some other solution ?

Yeah I'm trying to work out if straight after you insert a disc you can skip to the main menu. Waiting to skip previews or for FBI warnings is one thing that annoys me. One big positive of ripped movies on a HTPC

For DVD yellow button on the remote. BD's skip or FFWD.

Of course you can stream your ripped movies or play form attached HDD as well.

What HDD are you using (brand and size). NTFS formatting definitely works. Is it powered or USB powered? Have you tried both USB ports?

I have attempted with two different type of 1 TB hard drive. One is Samsung and the other is seagate . I've only tried the USB in the front panel .

Give the rear panel a try. Are they powered HDD's? Some USB powered HDD's don't draw enough power from the oppo. If either of them is eSATA compatible you could try that to. It wouldn't hurt to try a smallish USB memory stick either, just to confirm that the USB port on the player works.

Anyone imported one of these recently? Currently $499 on Amazon.com and kinda hoping I might score a deal during the black Friday sales. Am I dreaming for that better price or is it a possibility?

I think this is the player for me, just need to get the CFO on side, it's been a big few weeks on the HT and already racked up a tidy sum (nothing compared to some of you guys) but the hard part is she knows we can get a player for $150 so how to convince her of the extra investment when she can't tell the difference between SD and HD tv!
