Glennie Posted December 26, 2010 Posted December 26, 2010 Gattiweb has it listed for $980 GattiwebThe Merlin deal is looking very attractive. And Glenn, it's not just CD's (although these are very impressive). DVD-A and SACD sound great too G'Day Blairy, Missed your comment about SACD and DVD-A until just now. I haven't bought any to play on the PS3 as I haven't seen any in the shops locally, too far in the boonies I suppose. I have always enjoyed good audio (relative to the time) for the last 50 odd years or, since I was 12 or so and enjoy all sorts of music from classical to bluegrass (No heavy metal or hip-hop though). if I purchase the BDP-93 will definitely be looking for some SACD disks to play. I follow the lists of good music here and on other sites and have composed a list of music that I would be interested in buying. If I purchase the BDP-93 I think I will give the PS3 to my teenage grandkids. I supposed I will have to buy a media player to play the music on my NAS though, I don't think the 93 can handle that. I won't be unhappy to retire the PS3 as after short time of use the fan tends to roar as its speed picks up to handle the heat generated by this incredible toaster even though it is sitting on the top of my entertainment unit.. Regards, Glennie

Thanks for the comment. I am not sure what you are saying here. (Obviously an opportunity for me to learn something!) When you say a DLNA server like asset, do you mean a program on the NAS that sits in the background and automatically transcodes from one file type to another as you access them on the NAS from the BDP-93, or do you mean a program that you run as required to transcode the files? That is, when you have put a few files on the NAS, you then run the transcoder to transcode this particular batch of files which would then reside on the NAS alongside the original file type? I have a ReadyNAS Duo which is DLNA compliant and has iTunes server which I believe uses Firefly to run it. I can play songs from the NAS via the PS3 but have not set up playlists or album art etc. I mucked around with Firefly once but got disheartened with setting up playlists before I got very far. Was all to hard on the day or I was distracted by other things I suppose. Seeing the BDP-93 can play .wav files that is all I need. That will be at least as good as the PS3 in that regard. I don't have audio files in any other format except a few MP3's. Video files are usually .VOB or DivX so it looks as though things will be OK there. Cheers, Glennie
blairy Posted December 28, 2010 Author Posted December 28, 2010 Earlier in this thread I posted some comments about good CD (and audio discs generally) sound. Suffice to say I am very impressed. Earlier this afternoon I did a mini comparo between WAV files on my eSATA HDD and CD's. This is not as simple as it sounds and is very objective. The way the inteface works you cannot simply do an A:B test (let alone a blind test). Anyway, there's stuff all differrence between the two. if there are differences it's down to personal preferences, the brain playing tricks or they the WAV file was ripped. That's right, the phantasgamorical CD sound is also there from the HDD blairy

I am no expert here Glennie ; learning as I go ; but for all intents/ purposes it just sits in the background on the main computer and the files the oppo 83/93 cant play ; like apple lossless it will convert on the fly to something it will ; in my case lpcm . I did have all my cd's ripped to mp3 with a high bit rate and if I left them like that I wouldnt need the asset transcoder as that codec is recognised straight away as a supported codec by the 83 Being a bit of a pedantic fanatic I wanted lossless so I converted everything to apple lossless ; which shows up in my netgear stora as mp4a so has to be converted . Cant go wrong when you have plenty of storage ;you dont have to compress anything and it looks like you wont need asset anyway if you have wavs

I just put our CD's on the NAS as they are in .wav format so that eliminates one extra step installing an extra program which, I don't know how to install to run on the NAS. I think the NAS runs Linux as an OS anyway which might add to complexity. BTW, I thought the ReadyNAS Duo had heaps of storage at 1TB but by todays standards it is staring to look quite small. If I was buying one today I think I would buy a ReadyNAS Ultra with 6 disk capacity. Regards, Glennie

Grahameh Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 Have to praise the Oppo efficiency. I got mine within days, and that was over Xmas. Very easy to set up, even having to use 2 HDMI cables because of my non-HDMI4 amp. Haven't tried the calibration disk that I ordered with it yet. Really pleased with the picture and sound.
Garincha Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 Doe anyone know of a place in Brisbane that does region free mods? seriously tempted on this one. Can anyone comment on the media player functions of the 93, if so how does it compare to a wdtv? It would be great to retire to two components for one Thanks

tonymdj Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 (edited) Hi Guys, I ve never owned a bluray player and thanks to webbsy, im down for the Oppo BD-93. Anyone that has one know if you can play a 3d divx movie on the usb port and view it as 3d on a 3d tv? Lastly, Ive downloaded the manual and see that there are up to 8 setups. Although there is the easiest choice of Oppo hdmi to Amp (yammy RXV-667), then to TV, I noted that they also say you can also hook up the Oppo HDMI 1 to the TV and then use hdmi2 of the Oppo to the Amp for best possible processing. All a little too confusing at the moment as all my connections in my cinema setup were all gold RGB cables, so im totally new to HDMI. Any help is appreciated. Edited January 7, 2011 by tonymdj
flixyflox Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 Mine from Oppo direct was delivered this morning. The manual is - fantastically - crystal clear on audio setup instructions. Essentially the 2nd HDMI is really there for PJ owners with a separate amp. There are multiple options for downrezing the HD audio codecs to older amps either via RCA analogue (5 or whatever number speakers you have) or HDMI to the amp (if it has one.) The HDMI1 port carries obviously both audio and video (as does the HDMI2) and Ive left it with that single connection to the older Denon 2807 (with HDMI from the Denon to the Projector). LImited playback testing so far. Alas we cant open Netflix or BLockbuster streaming, given local IP address (Not available to non US) but one hopes Oppo may sign up Bigond Movies at some point. So far only the LG 570 player has it. All playback and upscaling superb, audio superb. One area of possible glitchiness is local network streaming by wireless(or possibly also ethernet, I didnt bother trying a cable.) MKV, divx(HD) avi etc files all play problem free. But there doesnt seem to be enough memory buffer to hold the relevant 3 terabytes list of downloaded files and folders on our network HDD. YOU have to turn on and off to recapture the Home folders/files complete list. I hope they come up with a firmware fix for this. PLayback seems good, and just as with the LG 570, is glitch free so long as you dont have any other streaming or update programs running on your PC. It cannot however deal with VOB files, where the LG for instance will allow you to start individual VOBs. This seems to be a problem with all network players at this stage. The upscaling on avi and divx is very good, and on 720p MKV movie dowloads superb. So good first impressions Loking forward to a mod kit post Jan 26.

HDMI1 uses the qdeo chip and is also for 3D processing. Idea is, if you're AVR isn't 3D capable but your panel is; HDMI1 direct to TV for video (both 2D and 3D) and HDMI2 to your AVR for audio. Not just for projector users. Of course if your tv/panel is not 3D just use HDMI1 to AVR then to TV/panel. Netflix is available Why no netflix in Oz see the fourth post in this thread. Network streaming is still a work in progress. Try the AVS thread there's all sorts of suggestions about which which media server to use and so forth and so on. Or just sit tight for firmware update, Oppo have told me in an email it will happen (but no date as yet). blairy
blairy Posted January 8, 2011 Author Posted January 8, 2011 OK, netflix.... My prior experience was with a 1.5mbps internet connection. Not unimpressed, I mean hey I'm watching internet video streamed from the other side of the planet and my expectations are not high It's watchable (sort of) and the content is of interest. Contacted my ISP and have now upgraded to a 20mbps ADSL2+ service. Just had a very quick look at an HD movie (Centurion - bloody awful movie by the way) that I had previously watched. Wow, what a difference. No it's not BD quality and not even fox HD quality. But it's a lot better than DVD. Had a quick gander at a couple of other things and they too were impressive. Clearly the trick with netflix is a fast internet connection. Without it I'd say don't bother. blairy
bradp51 Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 web page still says coming soon - are you on some beta test thing? Its the 95 that is coming soon.
bradp51 Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 Hooked up ethernet cable last night...after the trials and tribulations of shopping for a new fridge with wife Must say netflix looks much better than expected. Apparently the marvel chip does wonders with streaming video and first impressions are that it is very good. Lined up some movies to look at later and will see how this goes. blairy Hey blairy does the 93 do 3D ?
blairy Posted January 8, 2011 Author Posted January 8, 2011 Probably well before they bother fixing the Alien(s) aspect ratio/zoom problem on the BPD83 though ..... so much for continued support of legacy products According to one of the beta testers on the avs forum a new firmware for the 83 is happening but there have been some hiccoughs with it. blairy
blairy Posted January 8, 2011 Author Posted January 8, 2011 Hey blairy does the 93 do 3D ? Sure does but I don't have a 3D tv. Various posts on AVS indicate that 3D functionality works well. blairy
WorRm Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 (edited) Don't know if I should get the oppo, BDT300 or the pana BDT310 when it is released. My main need is duel hdmi and both have it. To make it best of DVDs Fast and fantastic blu-ray and 3d playback RF is not a must but I would not say no (mostly buy from amazon uk so having the US options will save me money) Also is 2d to 3d conversion just a gimmick? Can't comment on the Panasonic at all. Oppo DVD upscaling is very good. BD load times are quicker than my old fat PS3. Where you really see this as a speed demon is from pressing power on to ejecting tray and the BDP-93 is very very fast to boot up. Don't have 3D so can't comment. Gattiweb do RF mods for both Oppo and Panasonic don't they (as well as a few other brands). 2D to 3D conversion is not available on the Oppo (and I don't think it ever will be). If you have a 3D, apparently most of the TV's have this function built in, which effectively means you shouldn't need in your BD player too. blairy

Do you encounter this? I plan to confirm my order direct frm Oppo tonite, really can't wait to own it. Cheers
gavincato Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 I haven't had a sync issue, but I reckon those guys need to get a calibration disc to work out the delay. As a idea my denon 4311 via the oppo needed about 130ms of delay to get the sync accurate, so the oppo does take a fair bit of time relatively to process the video. On my ps3 the delay needed was only 38ms i think.
