blairy Posted November 3, 2011 Author Posted November 3, 2011 Anyone imported one of these recently? Currently $499 on Amazon.com and kinda hoping I might score a deal during the black Friday sales. Am I dreaming for that better price or is it a possibility?I think this is the player for me, just need to get the CFO on side, it's been a big few weeks on the HT and already racked up a tidy sum (nothing compared to some of you guys) but the hard part is she knows we can get a player for $150 so how to convince her of the extra investment when she can't tell the difference between SD and HD tv! If she can't the difference you won't convince her. If she can't hear the difference you won't convince her. If she doesn't understand the difference you won't convince her. However, if you can convince her that you can't tolerate crappy SD upgrades and garbage sound quality she may accept that this is necessary and worthwhile (if only for you). Sometimes you just have to admit that it's what youe need (well want really) and hope she goes with that. In my case have kids (who I may have brain washed) who back up my views on AQ and VQ and how important it is blairy
raZorTT Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 Can people recommend where I should get an BDP-93 from? Is it cheaper to get from OS? Or is there someone in Oz? Thanks, Simon
raZorTT Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 I'm waiting for mine to arrive from amazon, OS is the cheapest option and Amazon are much cheaper on shipping costs if you are prepared to wait for a week or so more.OS will cost you around $200 more, + $200 for a mod chip .... to be fair, these guys are entitled to make some money for their effort and risk, especially given the volatility of the AUD$ Thanks Chopsus. Did you go for the pro modkit? Is the only real benefit the fact you can change regions without turning it off? Cheers, Simon
Paul81 Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 Amazon is $499 and about $56 delivery to Sydney if you are prepared to wait up to 28days. I am going to order during the black Friday sales, reagrdless of price however I am hopeful they will have some discount on the $499 price. Haven't looked at chips yet so if anyone can make suggestions that would be great.

Sorry to burst your balloon, but it will not feature in the Black Friday sales as it would undercut the supplier who would likely stop supplying them. Can't check right at the moment but I am certain there was 2 shipping options $90 odd that was 7 - 14 days and xx - 28 days was about $56.

If you already have an Aussie Bluray player, don't bother with a mod chip for the Oppo and use the Aussie player for any Region B locked titles. You can download an iso called "super_disk" that will make the Oppo region free for DVD. Alternatively, rip any Region B locked titles to ISO (whilst removing the region code) and play back on the Oppo via an attached HDD.

Space is a premium in my hifi cabinet and the Oppo modded kicks ass.
zallapo Posted November 5, 2011 Posted November 5, 2011 (edited) Well just my luck, ordered a Pro Mod Chip Oppo-93 from Gatti, tested it today and the region mod doesn't work Did the remote control '1' trick, tested several US Region A discs (Pulp Fiction, Donnie Darko, X-men First Class), all to be knocked back by the player. I contacted Gatti just now, but have a feeling I have to send it back to Melbourne. I swear, 50% of the tech I buy these days is faulty, been having a decade of bad tech luck. Yes plus one less input required on a receiver or you could conceivably do away with a HDMI switch. Also you could sell your other player , hand it to friends or family or find another purpose for it. Just be aware if you are modding it yourself there is a smalll chance you could receive a dud chip as I did. However the replacement I recieved from bluraychip.dk worked fine so I would recommend them if you decide to do a DIY mod. Edited November 5, 2011 by Felix.

The Oppo should default to Region A if the kit is faulty. Is it playing Region B discs OK? If so, it sounds like the firmware on the pro kit needs an update (due to a conflict with recent oppo firmware) - see here to download with instructions.

Yeah, updated the firmware and has managed to revert back to Region A, but will no longer play Region B. it's permanently locked to Region A. Something is def wrong with the mod chip. Gatti's been extremely helpful with trying to sort it out. Thanx for the link and advice

A couple more things you could try: clear persistent memory and then shut down and power off at the wall for a couple of minutes.

Anden Posted November 5, 2011 Posted November 5, 2011 Some long memories around here! Yep! David went more than the extra yard when my 83 bricked itself on an update .... required a new motherboard which he installed at no cost to me.

IanD1503559705 Posted November 5, 2011 Posted November 5, 2011 I disagree. Why have 2 Bluray players when you can have one. 1) Save the cost of a mod chip 2) Spare in case the Oppo goes AWOL (although limited to Region B and Region ABC discs, at least you can watch something) I do agree there is a space saving and convenience factor, but the convenience factor seems to be dwindling with all the mod chip issues lately.

djOS Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 Hi Chopsus, make sure the IR output isnt set too high as it may overpower the circuitry.
djOS Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 There are no settings on it, just power in, IR in and 6 3.5mm mono jacks out .... the Yamaha has been living with it fine. bugger, some devices are more sensitive to IR power than others which is why the gear I use has pots to adjust output power.
blybo Posted November 10, 2011 Posted November 10, 2011 Yes, the pro also is much simplier to use in terms of key presses And the pro kit is also able to be upgraded via firmware... if required. I got mine from Gatti, who had just gotten a new delivery and was hoping this batch had less faulty chips... I got mine installed and tested by Gatti. Great service if you live in Melbourne Eastern suburbs.
