Anybody tried one of these USB 3.0 drives with the BDP93 or 95?

Samsung Portable HDD

I understand some USB 3.0 drives require more power than USB 2.0 and not all of them will work with bluray players or similar devices.

Thanks

Blairy

Picked one up yesterday and it works with oppo BDP93

Any problems with the PRO modchip?

No.

Installed by usb. Oppo self directed itself to open at "Fimware upgrade by USB". When complete shut down and opened with a Region B hard code, then shut down and opened with a Region A hard code. No probs.

Thanks, flixy. Seems safe enough to stop asking this question from now on. Looks like the 1.0g chip update sorted out the issue.

Mmm I think it's always worth doing a check with each firmware but you're probably right.

As you can no doubt tell from the date of the first post in this thread, my Oppo BDP93 was one year old yesterday :D

Celebrated this last weekend with a number of choice discs...most notably Pink Floyd Dark Side of The Moon SACD....12 months on and I still go wow...ooohhhh....aaaahhhh when playing this disc.

Courier today delivered Wish You Were Here SACD...call it a birthday present for my Oppo...nope...seriously it's an early Christmas present for me and wow....oooohhhh....aaahhhh.

I know we all have our favourite discs for reference material (and I can nominate plenty of others too) but these two have been a great way of celebrating a birthday ;)

Happy birthday to my Oppo BDP93 which is still blowing me away with how good it is

Cheers

Hi all

Been spending considerable time reading about BR player options and am dead keen on picking up an oppo BDP-93. However, not sure if it is overkill for my system. Keen to get some opinions on this.

SO... I run Krix phoenix fronts, KDX centre and equinox rears, seismix 3 sub through an onkyo tx-sr 606. TV is a panasonic 50" plasma (pz80a) and sony 55"nx720 run through a splitter in another room. Not looking to upgrade these any time soon.

I am likely to see/hear considerable benefit running an oppo as opposed to the ps3 I use ATM?

Cheers in advance for your opinions guys,

Hatters

I did, although I am using LPCM from both players as my older Denon 4306 doesn't do HD sound decoding. Having said that I tested a second hand Onkyo SR-805 I bought recently that does do HD decoding but the Denon was still superior.

Had a slight problem with my Inbetweeners movie which is region free, when loaded with player set to region A it dosent play at all,all you see is stop (no wrong region message). When changing player to region B all is sweet.I havent put the latest beta firmware on.Would updating the pro mod firmware fix this?

I doubt that updating the pro firmware will help, as the Oppo defaults to Region A when the pro mod firmware needs updating. Sounds like yours is working fine when changing to Region B, so sounds like a disc foible.

Which PS3 are you using and typically what do play on it...movies, music. What type and what formats?

For instance if you mostly watch DVD's I'd say the Oppo is better than the PS3. As far as formats go the Oppo can play every disc known to man (except HD-DVD) and most other formats from HDD/USB or even streamed (eg FLAC, WAV, MP3, ISO, MKV, etc)

Whether it's worthwhile depends on what you do with it I guess.

The recent beta firmware is now official.

If you've already got the beta you don't need to upgrade (again) apparently.

I have the 40GB PS3 with 2 USB ports and no flash card reader. Not sure of the model name.

I would tend to stream mp3s from my NAS and watch BRs, haven't watched a DVD in years. I run 2 sound outputs (HDMI and RCAs) from the PS3 so I can listen to music in zone 2 through the amp.

Hadn't really contemplated using the oppo as a streaming device as I thought I'd stick with the Ps3 for that...

The Oppo excels with DVD's...irrelevant to you.

Most will tell you that for BD there is very little between the players and as an owner of a PS3 I think is largely correct although do concisder the Oppo slightly better.

For audio the Oppo is better and can also play many more disc formats (DVDA, SACD, HDCD) as well as digital formats (eg FLAC etc). When I was using the PS3 for streaming I used uncompressed WAV files (instead of MP3's).

If your main use is BD and streaming MP3's I'd stick with the PS3, it does a very good job in these areas.

cheers

Interesting news just posted on AVSForums: looks like there's going to an official "AU" model Oppo 93 (and 95). Link to the press release is here: http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/BU1201/S000...al-dynamics.htm

Anyone think of any "AU" streaming services the AU firmware might offer?

With International Dynamics I wouldn't be expecting anything extra except a large price rise. Anyone thinking of buying from Amazon should get in quick, as I'd expect they will be required to stop shipping here.

Yes re Amazon comments, I suspect that Quark may be right.

On the upside, the Oz version may eventually provide local streamed content, something you won't get on the imported US version. Examples include the FTA catch up stations (ABC iView, SBS and CH7 do these) as well as various IP movie services...Bigpond and iiNet seem to do this already.

Yeah, I'd never heard of International Dynamics before, although I do like the name. Sounds like they stole it from an old Looney Tunes cartoon.

Yay, one more item subject to the 30% Australian retailers tax!

They've been around for a long time.

Encel's used to sell their Australian made products in the 70's (and 80's?). My first set of speakers were INTERDYN's and I still use them for our main rears in the HT :)
