Thanks everyone for your help on this issue. The fact sheet looks good to me - I'll forward this to OPPO and will pursue the topic earnestly.

Michael, I hope the region free DVD works out with Oppo. Thanks for taking time out from your holiday to deal with us HT zealots - now time to enjoy the rest of your break. :)

I dunno - factor in freight for small quantities, GST and the local support and warranty and ir seemed ok to me. I'm sure IDA will do a good job of this too but if you get your player modded all bets are off which is a concern. I hope Gatti and Merlin will still offer modded players.

Gatti will still be offering OPPO's for the fore seeable future, modded or R A locked.

At least he'll still be there with support , service, modding, and i'll put my right nut on he'll be quicker than an IDA service centre.

Ian reading your post above...

If you are referring to me, I don't work in the industry just an amateur HT person and my opinions are based on my personal understanding, which of course could be incorrect: I have no insider knowledge.

No-ones forcing you to respond at gunpoint and frankly ICBF with your attitude.

no not referring to you but to "IDA" which the ipad changed in its wisdom to 'Ian'. to which i apologise as didnt realise. And yes I do think IDA whom I believe is in the industry and given the products involved would think be better informed. With better understanding of the current state of play with regard region coding rather than coming onto a forum to ask for status of legalities ! or with lack of knowledge of what competitor products offer. But yeah as he says often enthusiasts seem to know a lot more about these things than people in the industry. In which case all I can say is ...is there any wonder ! yes probably a bit rough on my part. And they will at end of it just do what ever they decide and the market ultimately decide...

Anybody having difficulties with Despicble Me?

I can play all through the bits at the start but when the screen on oppo says Top Menu the TV screen is blank.

This is a Universal release, region A, B & C. Over on AVS forums the EU oppo users were having difficulties with Universal releases in recent weeks. Don't know if it's related to that.

Will email oppo and see what happens

blairy

Oppo's response is that this is a known issue with Universal discs (European and Asian releases) and will be fixed in future FW release.

Mine is region free and I think I bought it from Amazon US (although I may have bought it locally in Australia or maybe Amazon UK - simply can't recall :logik: )

Anyhoo, erased persistent storgae, no change. Turned ON BD Live and hey presto all good.

Thanks

On another forum I have seen mention of the following prices from IDA on Oppo BDP-93AU $649 RRP and BDP-95AU $1299.without multi region kits. Any opinions on this pricing compared to previous?

IDA's Product Manager advised those prices back on page 42 of this thread. The prices don't include region free mod kits, whereas Merlin's pricing includes the basic kit: 93 = $850 with the 95 = $1450. Allowing say $100 to supply and fit the basic region free kits, the IDA pricing is about $100 less for the 93 and $50 less for the 95. Of course importing direct from the US is cheaper, as it was with Merlin.

It will be interesting to see if IDA's wholesale pricing allows enough margin for retailer discounting.

Folks the bulk of posts over the last five or six pages have been somewhat off topic. This topic was always intended to be an owners (or potential owners) topic where we can share our joys with this piece of equipment and seek help when we're having difficulties.

At the moment we're drifitng into the realms of wholesaling and distribution and a raft of issues salient thereto, but generally irrelevant to an owners thread. Perhaps IDA can setup their own thread ;)

There's actually been posts seeking asssitance with issues in recent days that have been largley ignored as they're being drowned out by off topic posts. I for one would appreciate it if we could get back on topic please :)

Thanks

I think the prices quoted from IDA are more than reasonable, add the $60 RF internal/external mod and your away, just remove the mod if you need warranty work, even the pro mods are easy to install/remove yourself if you need warranty.Always thought gatti/merlin were abit over priced but people were happy to pay extra for the satisfaction of not having to send back to states for warranty.A t the end of the day IDA can sell unmodded players(hopefully the dvd region can be sorted or at least they can apply the super disc mod in store) and merlin/gattyi can continue to sell modded players to those willing to pay for it.

Looking at it from oppos point they will sell a hell of alot more players and get their name out to the wider public thru IDA than they will thru merlin/gatti.

Over on AVS the moderators have shut down speculation on the ISO issue.

As to FW notes, take extreme care. Making ISO avalaible was not announced in FW notes...it was an Easter Egg. On this basis, removing the functionality may not be announced either.

One of the Beta testers on AVS (and these people seem to know more than most) has mentioned that Oppo's silence on the subject may indicate they are still fighting this; here's hoping.

Well, what a fantastic sunday afternoon....wife out shopping or lunching with sister or whatever...started with all music on shuffle from NAS while making lunch. Decided an audio session would be a good idea....quite loud :hyper:

Eric Clapton Slowhand SACD MCH...don't think I've played this on the BDP93. One of those SACD discs that is not up to some of the others I own...not any more, cripes this was incredible...the BDP93 didn't just lift a veil, it blew it away...incredible.

Billy Joel Piano Man SACD Stereo... first time I played this (only a few months ago) I was quite disappointed. Of course this had been a quiet listening session (the day it arrived) after everybody else in household was in bed. Loud this disc is very very good...and I proved that again this afternoon.

Neil Young Harvest DVD-A...one of the greatest albums of all time and in surround sound better than ever...acoustic tracks....LSO tracks...whatever.....they're all briliiant and the Oppo is fantastic with this album.

Back to my NAS and played Get your Ya Ya's Out by the Rolling Stones. I've raved about the quality of this album courtesy of the Oppo in this thread previously. No idea why but the Oppo is great with old sources of music such as this album.

Then of course I picked a Christmas present...Springsteen Live at Hyde Park BD (so much for audio session)...wife due any minute...selected Outlaw Pete and blew the roof off. Naturally she arrived home about two thirds of the way through the song...."a thief could'a come and emptied the house and you wouldn't know." And she's right too ;)

I must look tor the Piano man!!!

He's the guy sitting on the stool in front of that big object tapping on the little black and white rectangles. Can't miss him in a room really. :)

I know what you mean. I've felt a bit uneasy using my room cranked up when no body else is home. Have thought a few times I must see if there is a way to rig our video door bell into the HT somehow... And put a phone extention in there too.

The fact that moderators on AVS are deleting even the most benign references to the removal of ISO functionality doesn't fill me with a whole lot of confidence. I mean, really? We're not even allowed to mention it? And who or what exactly are Oppo "fighting" on this issue?

We have our video doorbell into the HT room and a phone extension just outside in the bar. I had the same worries as our house is very long and the front door is all the way at the other end and the HT is in a kind of basement as well making it another floor also. The video panel is a nice black with blue led so matches the light switches and also the colours of the room which is black with blue walls. All looks okay and does the job. My only concern is someone who doesn't ring the doorbell and have thought about that at night when we are down there watching something.

Hmmm getting off the Oppo discussion though aren't we.

So, according to the chatter on AVSForums (most of which has now been deleted by moderators), it looks like ISO support will definitely be removed from future firmwares for the 93/95 range. Seeing as though we can't talk about it over there, why not talk about it here?

Who's planning not to update? You'll lose potential fixes and improvements, and there might be problems with future discs, but you'll keep ISO support. The way I see it, a firmware without ISO support would have to offer something else pretty damn compelling to make me want to switch.

It also makes me long for the old days of hacked Oppo firmwares. I remember a Russian guy put out some custom firmwares for my old Oppo 971 DVD player, which worked just fine. If someone (Russian or otherwise) decided to do a custom 93 firmware that added new features and kept ISO support, I'd forget that I'm a married man and kiss him. And given that the 93 firmware is broken up into a main version, a loader version and a sub version, I wonder if it's possible to update bits of the firmware while keeping the bulk of it intact.

Or is it simply not that big a deal? The 93 is still a great player. I was more than happy with it before it had ISO support, so why should it make that much of a difference?
