Unpacked the Oppo 95 last night. I've had Oppo DVD player before so I wasn't surprised by the quality of the packaging which was excellent. Found a surplus IEC power cable and plugged it in. Had a minor hiccup until I realised I hadn't selected the correct supply voltage on the back panel, but after ol' Dumbo sorted that out, it fired up flawlessly.

I hadn't bothered to check before, but I was pleasantly surprised to discover that about 85% of my blu rays are region free, so I don't have to race off just yet and get the pro mod kit. Did a quick calibration check on my 65VT30A using the AVSHD disc which resulted in no significant change from the previous settings using a PS3. Initial reaction is that picture is very very good, so quite pleased with that. Will try out audio performance from CD in the 2ch system next. Good stuff.

And for the other 15% you may find ripping them and playing from a HDD is a viable solution (rather thanan RF mod chip).

Shifted the Oppo to the 2ch system last night and spun a dozen or so CDs with familiar tracks. Audio performance was excellent. I do like systems that resolve detail and the Oppo seemed to be able to do that as well as or better than my previous Sony XA7ES. Just seemed to be able to reach into the music and extract stuff that hadn't been so apparent before. Soundstage was great, overall balance perhaps a tad dry but very enjoyable.

Haven't tried any SACD yet, but in terms of a "Universal Player", the Oppo 95 has got to be considered an absolute bargain and certainly on par with higher cost dedicated bluray/dvd/cd players

I have a networking issue that hopefully someone may have an answer to. I have an RF modded BDP-93 but this issue probably applies to any of the recent Oppos.

I'm trying to share media files (specifically .mkv files) from my PC (W7 Pro 64bit) to stream on the Oppo. I have a dedicated media drive quite separate from the OS partition. Anyway the Oppo can see the PC fine (both connected via a gigabit switch) but it won't display any .mkv container files (H.264) located on my PC for some reason. It will find and stream .wmv container files copied to the identical network path no problem at all but not .mkv ones.

Is this a limitation of the device, firmware problem, configuration issue or is something else at play preventing these files from being viewable under 'My Network' in the Oppo?

Thanks in advance for any replies. Also apologies if the answer is buried in this 1000 post thread or elsewhere on the forum.

Sounds to me like this is a problem with the way the DLNA server on your media drive is set up. It's responsible for what the Oppo will list, and for some reason it's not showing MKV files. There's probably a setting somewhere - maybe even a device profile (I'm guessing the media server uses Twonky). A generic DLNA 1.0 or 1.5 profile should work.

Thanks aHoC.

I'm just using regular Windows sharing on my PC drive adding the relevant folder to my media library. It's got me baffled. Both .avi. and .wmv files show just fine, even my TiVo's .ts files display and stream on the Oppo without a hiccup. But .mkv files are nowehere to be seen.

I've also tried changing the file extension on one of the .mkv files to .wmv but the Oppo still won't see it so it seems to have something against the h.264 codec when streaming over my network. It has no problem whatsoever playing these files when placed on a USB thumbdrive though.

The Oppo 93 is a tremendous player. Just this one annoying hurdle from achieving media playing nirvana! :)

What sound format is on your .mkv files? Th oppo won't play hirez audio in an mkv file although I thought it still showed them

These files are all HD TV shows from the US so we are just talking talking regular AC3 DD. Again these files play fine on the Oppo when connected via a USB thumbdrive/hard disk. But they can't be found when searching for them on the Oppo's 'My Network' menu for some bizarre reason.

So I can only think that Windows sharing is preventing these files from being discoverable by the Oppo, although have no idea why it would be blocking .mkv h.264 files. Anyway I guess I will try contacting Oppo and see if they have anything to say on the matter since it seems to be a unique problem that no one else on the forum seems to be having.

If I get a solution I will post it back here in case other Oppo owners encounter this in the future.

I went through similar and it drove me barking mad

In desperation I actually went to Twonky and did a trial and it solved all problems of files not appearing

Try it , you get a trial for a month

While the set up should work without it 20 bucks is a small price for sanity

ok cheers senna

I might try upgrading my Oppo firmware first as I have version 42 which is now a few iterations dated. I presume that's ok to do with a region free chipped device and that I won't brick my player??

If that doesn't work then I'll give Twonky Media Server a whirl.

Make sure you use the offical firmware as the latest beta will remove iso playback from exturnal storage on the oppo and it cant be reversed.

What are you using to stream the mkv files...WMP? not sure WMP can do mkv in which case it won't show it to the oppo.

As suggested anove try twonky. Link to Oppo faq re media servers here too http://watershade.net/wmcclain/BDP-93-faq.html#what-are-some-dlna-servers. You might also want to hunt down a free server if you don't want to pay for twonky (which is very well regarded by the way).

Thanks Blairy

I've downloaded a copy of Twonky. Will do the firmware upgrade tonight but I'm guessing it won't fix my particular issue so will likely install Twonky tomorrow.

Arrggghh the frustration continues. I have installed the DivX codec pack as well as Twonky Media Server and I still can't see .mkv files on the Oppo. I have tried the generic media receiver profile in Twonky for the Oppo as well as generic DLNA 1.0 and 1.5 profiles and nothing is helping.

I have done mutiple reboots of the Oppo and the PC with all these changes and also updated to the most recent official release firmware without any success in streaming these files.

I'm quickly approaching the point of abandoning the Oppo as a streaming device. I mean the only files I'm interested in streaming are HD H.264 .mkv ones anyway as SD XviD .avi look like ass on my 64" TV.

Well I emailed Oppo and to their credit they replied almost immediately. They confirmed that .mkv files should stream and to try 3rd party software such as TVersity, Twonky (even though I mentioned I had already tried this), oShare or the PS3 Media Server as .mkv files are not natively supported by the Windows Media Server.

So I gave oShare a go which is super simple freeware from Sourceforge and bingo it worked straight away!

http://sourceforge.n...ource=directory

I think there was a firewall issue when I tried Twonky as oShare immediately prompted me to punch a hole in Windows firewall during installation which Twonky never asked me to do. So in hindsight I probably could've got Twonky to work if I persevered and tinkered further. Anyway I'm just happy I got something to work and oShare is totally free which is a nice bonus. I have finally attained media playback nirvana! :D

QUOTE (dJOS @ Jan 5 2012, 11:01 AM)

Perhaps Oppo's current Aussie customers should all email them expressing our concerns and requesting that we no be barred from Purchasing direct? As a proud 83 owner I'm very concerned!!! unsure.gif

EDIT: Just Sent this email to Oppo Service, feel free to recycle it:

Hello to all OPPO lovers on DTV forum. Michael here from International Dynamics Australasia (IDA), who will be handling OPPO in Australia and New Zealand from March, when the first "AU" versions of the BDP-93 and BDP-95 arrive.

I'd like to reassure forum members that IDA will be committing significant resources to the OPPO brand. This will include factory-trained support personnel, promotion and marketing of the brand, appointment of authorised specialist dealers, and most importantly, development of local online features that simply would never happen under the current arrangement. We wil lseek to add features such as ABC iview and other TV station catch-up services, Quickflix movie streaming, and any other online content that may become available.

Regarding local content services, we welcome any suggestions and feedback you'd like to provide. We certainly acknowledge all the loyal OPPO owners in Australia and New Zealand, and understand the wealth of knowledge and experience you have with OPPO products.

Regarding pricing, we understand this is an area of concern, and have agreed with OPPO to keep local pricing as competitive as possible. Our target RRPs for the two models are $649 for BDP-93AU, and $1299 for BDP-95AU. Compared to Merlin Audio Design's pricing, you'll note ours are significantly cheaper. Compared to buying from OPPO Digital or Amazon in the USA, once freight and insurance are taken into account, you'll see that our prices are pretty close. OPPO and IDA will work closely to ensure local pricing remains as competitive as possible.

I'd also like to acknowledge any concerns about dealing with IDA, and specifically Alex Encel. IDA is proud of its history in the AV industry in Australia, and like its competitors, seeks to move towards the kind of products that people want to buy and use. OPPO is a great example of this, however IDA's other old and new brands are also continuously developing new products to meet market expectations. This would not be possible without the stewardship and great support from Alex Encel. Regardless of any opinions on Alex's position on DTV or 3D in the past, he has a position in the industry that many competitors would aspire to.

I'd also like to point out another important feature that comes with IDA's appointment as OPPO distributor. Unlike all our other imported lines, IDA will offer service on products already in the market. IDA will not offer under-warranty labour, however OPPO has agreed to provide support on parts for any existing OPPO owners still within their 1 year warranty period, regardless of where they purchased their player. Our understanding is that Merlin Audio did not support players purchased direct from Amazon or OPPO Digital in the USA, so this is a win for existing owners.

Apologies for the long post. Feel free to get in touch with any queries.

Hi Michael

Do you have any more news re the above, ie a possible March date for release of the Oppos?

Thanks

Hi Nick,

We expect BDP-93AU and BDP-95AU to be available to dealers in the second or third week of March. OPPO products will be added to www.internationaldynamics.com.au over the coming week, and the list of authorised dealers will be populated over time. The response from specialist retailers about OPPO has been sensational, so you will see authorised OPPO dealers in all states.

Upon release to the market, authorised dealers will be able to advise options for buyers.

More news soon.

The 95 has a different power supply and needs to be switched to 230V - the 93 has a universal power supply, so no switching.

Yes, I was a little concerned when my 95 didn't power up, until I discovered the voltage selection switch!! D'oh!
