aHorseofCourse Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 Blairy: I used a SanDisk 4GB USB stick, no LED, formatted FAT. I know Merlin recommends using the same type of stick because they've proven reliable. Once the flash procedure is complete the front of the Oppo will say 'No Disc'. Power it down after that.
sirhc55 Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 (edited) I have tried a Sandisk Cruze 16Gb and a Kingston 4Gb - both of these units have worked AOK in the past. No joy at all - no flashing LED on the disks and no reaction to the update button sequence Edited August 19, 2012 by sirhc55
ryrrek1503563305 Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 Successful here using an old no name 1GB USB stick. Had to partition the stick, not just format it to FAT (on a Mac - a PC may be different). Would not work without partitioning.
sirhc55 Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 Also, my disks are formatted FAT32. I usually use my Mac for my work but I thought I would download from my PC - tried that download and still no joy. My brain is telling me at the moment that there may be some logic in disconnecting the mod chip then reconnecting - somewhat like removing an AC plug to reboot a system

bbar Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 I partitioned three disks on my Mac all with partions and still no luck. Note he said FAT and not FAT32 as you did. Find a mate with a PC and try that way if all else fails.
sirhc55 Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 bbar - I have always formatted my thumbdrives on my mac to FAT32 and they have worked every time in the past. I also used my Acer PC to write these files and they would not intialise on the Oppo. Please also note that in the instructions for the upgrade it does say FAT OR FAT32
sirhc55 Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 Still no luck but what I have done is list the data from setup - 0770 The codes match the update for the Oppo but one confusing item is the BD&DVD region code at the bottom right. It is showing BD region C and DVD region 0. So, still scratching my head
alf56 Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 I emailed Casper at bluraychip.dk and already have a response... Anybody who's done this successfully care to post what brand and type of stick you used? Thanks blairy I first updated my oppo firmware to the latest,(hadn't tried the beta because I knew it caused problems with the pro mod)I then shut down the oppo, inserted 2gb transcend USB thumb drive,(which I had extracted the new pro mod firmware to)turned on the oppo using, top menu-setup-red-9 code, led flashed for a few seconds then stopped, shut down the oppo turned back on using the 3 button as per instructions and region change works perfectly.I did read somewhere that it's best to use a USB stick no bigger than 2gb for firmware updates, something to do with partioning on larger USB sticks (though I used a 4gb Lexar to update the oppo's firmware with no problems). Hope this helps Adrian
David Williams Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 I used a n name yum cha tradeshow giveaway. I did notice the button presses did nothing unless a USB stick was plugged in (the front port of course)

It is showing BD region C and DVD region 0. So, still scratching my head SirHC 55 you seem to be having the same or quite similar issue(s) to me. I've emailed Casper at bluraychip.dk a few times now and I cannot speak highly enough of his support and service in trying to resolve this issue. Having said that I still haven't got it solved yet... After suggesting different USB sticks (he even offered to post me one for free that he has successfully used) he has also suggested...in repsonse to my questions /comments... to try the following. Q: My mod was powering up the player when initiating the update, but it hasn’t done so the last few times I’ve tried. A: When the update is initiated, but not succeding, it will keep in that state, and try to read any usb flash plugged in. You will have to remove the mains from the player, in a few seconds, and then power it up again. It will reset the mod to its default state. I've tried that a few times and so went back with some further questions/comments/observations. I got these in an email before work and haven't tried them yet. Will do so after diner and when I can kick the kids out of the audio/video room. Q: I have disconnected the mains power and then tried to reinstall the modchip FW. The player is not powering on when using TOP MENU - SETUP - RED - NINE. A: It is a very basic feature in the mod, so if it does not start up anymore with this keysequence, then you have most likely changed the remote control address on the modchip. Please do the following, to get the “control” back: -Remove mains from player in a few seconds, and then back in. -Press 1 to test if it powers up. -If not, remove the battery back plate on the remote, and select address 2. -Press 1 again to test if it powers up. Repeat with address 3. If it powers up in address 2 or 3. Press TOP MENU - SETUP – RED – 1 to revert it back to normal. Sirhc55, you seem to have experienced this one as well.... Q: A couple of other weird things. If I go into setup and press 0770 on remote it shows I am in Zone C for Bluray and Zone 0 for DVD. I have never used Zone C so don’t know how this happens. If I select OK (instead of exiting using SETUP this changes to Zone A (for BD) and 0 (for DVD). After disconnecting the mains power this changes back to C and 0. A: It is because the modchip is working. When you press ok in the 0770 menu, it will revert to factory default A0 or A1. When you disconnect the mains, and power on again, the modchip will change to C 0 , because your last region selection was C. Q: I also note that when using the latest Oppo Beta or official FW the player sometimes hangs during boot up. The blue light is on but dimmed and I get the splashscreen on the TV and it hangs there. A few presses of the power button turns it off and then it starts up OK. A: That sounds like the way it fails, when new august firmware is used, but the modchip is not updated. Q: I have now rolled back to the April FW and am using a sandisk cruzer USB stick. A: You can not roll back, if you have installed the final official firmware. I guess you have used the beta, and then rolled back, right ? I haven't gone back to Casper on this one yet, but when I upgrade to the latest FW (official edition) it does let me roll back to the Beta. I don't think this is meant to happen. Q: Casper are there any other steps I can try or am doing something wrong? A: Start out by getting the modchip to respond, as mentioned above, then let me know which oppo firmware you have installed right nor (check in setup menu, just to be sure), and then check if you have installed the new firmware in the modchip, by pressing the TOP MENU - SETUP – YELLOW – 6 sequence, then we will take it from there. Will post back after I've tried some of these Cheers Blairy
blairy Posted August 22, 2012 Author Posted August 22, 2012 Did you get it going Blairy? David thanks for asking... very kind of you. See above for the no part and below for the good news blairy
blairy Posted August 22, 2012 Author Posted August 22, 2012 Will post back after I've tried some of these Cheers Blairy As promised.... Using the first step outlined above by Casper I tried turning on using 1 on the keypad on the remote, nothing, changed remote button inside near batteries to 2 and again tried turning on using button 1 on the keypad...nothing. Final attempt, button inside case near battery set to three and turned on Oppo using button 1 on keypad and hey presto I'm in business. Next step (which Casper does not explain all that well in his notes above) is to turn off the Oppo and press TOP MENU - SETUP - RED - 1 to get the remote back to code one. When you do this the player does not display anything at all; you're doing this on blind faith but it does work. And then flick the switch inside the remote back to 1 (of course). If I think about it Casper/bluraychip.dk would have to build this functionality in so people who set their remote to 2 or 3 can still use the chip. I'm guessing if you pressed TOP MENU - SETUP - RED - 2 your remote could then be set to address 2. Of course then I update the bluraychip.dk FW to 1.1a without a hitch. Whilst doing all of this I was on the April FW. I have now rolled back to the December 2011 FW and RF functionality is working and I can see my ISO's too. Next step is to get brave and try the update to the latest FW. Thanks everybody for all your help blairy
blairy Posted August 22, 2012 Author Posted August 22, 2012 OK, I went for it, sort of. Upgraded to the latest beta FW, knowing this allows roll back to April FW, from which the bluraychip.dk allows roll back to any FW. Once upgraded, my first test was to determine whether or not the bluraychip.dk roll back of Oppo FW still works. IT DOESN"T!!!! Once you upgrade to the latest Oppo FW you can no longer use the bluraychip.dk roll back function (RED-8-5-2-0). Obviously this means no more ISO. From the latest beta I rolled back to the April FW and the bluraychip.dk roll back function allowed me to reinstall the ISO FW from December. Bummer blairy
sirhc55 Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 Thanks Blairy for all of the info. I have since found out that my Oppo remote is buggered which is probably why I was having no luck. I have found out that my Oppo DV 980H remote actually performs a lot of the functions of the BDP-93 remote. Unfortunately the 980H remote does not have the coloured buttons. I have written a sequence into my Harmony 1000i (top menu - setup - red - 9) which I will try tomorrow.
blairy Posted August 22, 2012 Author Posted August 22, 2012 Contact Oppo (or maybe the Oz distributor). You should be able to get a replacement remote for a few bucks. blairy
sirhc55 Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 Contact Oppo (or maybe the Oz distributor). You should be able to get a replacement remote for a few bucks. blairy I sent an email to Merlin so I will probably hear back on the morrow. From Oppo US they are amazingly cheap at $12
blairy Posted August 22, 2012 Author Posted August 22, 2012 And if you ask them for the remote via email I think they'll even post it for free, blairy
aHorseofCourse Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Great news, blairy! Glad you're back in action. And it's good to know the firmware rollback function no longer works. That could save someone a nasty surprise.

That could save someone a nasty surprise. Thanks and I know this sounds word but the good news is my Oppo FW upgrade failed when I first tried it. If it had worked I'd be on the new FW with no ISO and no way to roll back. Blairy
sirhc55 Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 I believe that there has been a lot of buzz lately re pricing of products in Australia compared to O/S. Well today I phoned the importer of Oppo and I must say they were very helpful. I ordered a new remote for delivery by AE (hopefully tomorrow). Price $46.95 compared to Oppo’s price of $12 but that’s not a worry as I have always paid the going price if I want something in particular.

When ya gotta have/need it yesterday situation we'll pay it, but that is a half decent price. Only 2 weeks ago i HAD to purchase a new remote for my Digitalview PVR, $62 delivered an it took over a week from the supplier, last time i checked their site i could of sworn they were under $ 35, but the PVR's were still available then too, supply and demand =price gouge .
sirhc55 Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 (edited) Ordered the new remote yesterday and got it this morning around 9am - fantastic service from the importer. I also have to highly recommend David Gatti. It appears that my Pro Mod needed a new disk for the board, which David is sending to me. So hopefully by the middle of next week I should be up and going again. Edited August 24, 2012 by sirhc55
